1964 Ford Falcon Ranchero
Ford's Falcon Ranchero had many forbearers. The first Model T and Model A pickups consisted of a shortened car body with a separate bed mounted in the rear; a rare domestic 1931 Model A Deluxe pickup had smooth bed sides. The Australian market saw Ford launch a coupe utility, or "ute," with integrated bed as early as 1934. Car-based trucks were far more refined than a standard truck, but in an era before our current pickup-as-fashion-statement environment, they simply cost too much for a self-employed working man who needed a work truck.
For consignment a 1964 version of the American "Ute" style vehicle...look it's a car...no...it's a truck...it's a...Falcon Ranchero! It has its factory V8 with a 4-speed transmission, it was a color code delete special order #0289 vehicle, and a rare driver's door spotlight, which the consigner stated was put on at the factory. A few engine upgrades, nicely painted, and a good looking interior and this is a fine example gracing our excessive square footage at the Classic Auto Mall
Exterior
Retaining the 64 Falcon exterior nose, tail, hood and cabin although sans the rear seat, this car has straight steel panels, a nice looking bed showing signs of use, and shiny dimple free chrome trimmings. This is all bathed in blue which is a quality respray, showing a few faults, but otherwise very nice. The grille retains its original beauty, as do the bumpers and headlight bezels. Magnum 500 wheels are now on all 4 corners and are wrapped in 205/70R14 radial tires.
Interior
A snazzy black and blue color combo adorns the interior. A simple blue metal dash is up front, and has all the correct gauges and buttons embedded within its confines. Dual aftermarket gauges hang below this dash, and it has the original radio still in. Black vinyl covers the split bench which makes use of tuck and roll inserts, smooth bolsters and white piping separating the two surfaces. A long chromed shift lever reaches toward the driver from the center hump. Black carpeting in nice condition covers the floors, and a black headliner with a few sags hangs above.
Drivetrain
A nice shiny 260ci V8 graces the clean engine bay. It has an Edelbrock 500 CFM 4-barrel carburetor atop, a Weiand intake manifold, and a 4-speed manual Toploader transmission. A Ford 8-inch rear with 3.25 gears makes up the axle configuration. Noted also is an aluminum radiator, and a new dual exhaust system.
Undercarriage
A look underneath and everything looks solid, nicely painted and structurally sound. No drips seen anywhere, and independent coil springs for the front, and leaf springs for the rear. Drum brakes are all around.
Drive-Ability
This Ranchero is a quick starter, idles smoothly, runs great, drives nicely, and cruises comfortably at highway speed. Brakes were very good, and handling was nice and tight.
A well done version of the Ranchero, with a few faults here and there, but a rarely seen vehicle. I would even go as far to say that in all our inventory, this is the only Ranchero, and may be our first from this era. Some nice improvements on the engine, and a well-cared for undercarriage.
