Up for auction is a super rare 1957 E-code Thunderbird. Of the 21,380Thunderbirdsbuilt for the1957model year, only 1,499 were the fabulousE-Code Thunderbirds. TheE-Codeexamples were equipped with a 312/270 HP V-8 engine fed by two 4-barrel carburetors. ThisThunderbirdBronzeE-Bird is believed to be 97,083 original miles survivor
Only the 57 Thunderbirds had (and are) recognized by slanted sharp tail-fins, round tail lights with optional back-up light in the center, dual exhaust exits thru back corners of the massive 2-part shaped bumper, and the Thunderbird emblem below the trunk keyhole. They also had a massive front 2-part curved bumper with a taller grill and parking lights and a license plate position formed into the bumper.
This 57 E-Bird has many rare factory original options (20) as you can see above. I purchased the car from the family that had owned it since 1994. The owner prior to that lived only a few miles from me in Jefferson County, Georgia and he owned the car for over 20 years dating back to the early 70s.
Following services, completed 11/05/2019
(service work):
The oil & filter was changed (actually 2 times
initially and again after car was tuned/running and driven a bit), lubed the chassis, replaced points & condenser, drained and replaced transmission fluid, replaced spark plugs, new gas filter (internal filter only Kept original cannister on car), replaced fuel tank/sending unit and fuel inlet tube, blew out & cleaned all gas lines, rebuild kits for the original teapot carburetors, adjusted the lifters, replaced brake light switch, replaced brake master cylinder, complete front and rear brake job including new shoes/cylinders/ and 4 steel brake lines, inspected axle seals were fine, charged AC system (still R22), installed new correct battery, and 1 new battery cable end. I also replaced all 4 tires 195/75R14 Radials Hankook. The wheels are all EH code wheels including the spare.
I was pleased with the outcome to say the least! I guess what surprised me the most were four things:1. there is basically no blow-by from the motor 2. There are no leaks from the motor, the transmission or the rear end
3. The Air Conditioning compressor and system works like new after charging it and the compressor is so quiet you can hardly hear it running
4. The factory power seat and the factory Volumatic Signal-Seek radio still work!
Everything works on this E-Bird except the tachometer and the clock. The lights and turn signals work, the power seat works, the speedometer, temp and fuel gauge work, the AC works and blowing cold, and the windows roll up and down just fine. There is a star in the windshield on passenger side
The interior is factory original Bronze. When I purchased the car
in the trunk was a complete & matching interior (still in original boxes) from 1991 purchased from Larrys Thunderbird Parts in California. It included carpet, seat covers, all panels and trim. I had my interior guy replace the carpet, the seat, and the vinyl trim on top of the door panels and top panel as well as the new drop curtain. Underneath the carpet was solid and still original paint on the floors (pictures attached below). I did not replace the door and kick panels and the new ones go with the car. The floor in the trunk is also original paint and perfect and rust free. (pictures attached).
I hand polished all the brightwork and trim, cleaned and detailed under the hood (no paint used), and cleaned up and polished the paint on the car. I have been around the car with a magnet and cannot find any sign of body work on the car. There is no rust. The car had 1 repaint many years ago (70s or 80s), however the paint on the floors and trunk are original paint and probably the firewall, fender wells and the bottom side of the hood are as well. The paint is slick and shines nice
its very presentable, however not perfect (paint is over 30 years old).
The 1957 T-bird hardtop was available with or without portholes. The 57 non-porthole hardtop had the new Thunderbird emblem in a small disk; the same style emblem that is on the steering wheel of the 57
the hardtop, as you can see in the pictures on this E-bird, is the non-porthole top
it is in excellent condition. It also comes with a soft-top that stores behind the seat.
To sum it up, this highly optioned & rare 57 E-bird is in very good condition and mostly original. It is not perfect, and it has a little patina on some of the trim as in the fender vents and the side view mirror arm, the paint is not perfect however the body is all original and rust free.
There are lots of pictures below and I have attached a YouTube video of the car running. Please give the many pictures time to download and please watch the video as well
