1958 Ford Ranchero
Ford's Model T pickups served as both car and truck from the teens, and the hood, grille, and front fenders were the same on Model T sedans. The designs didn't clearly diverge until 1936. Meanwhile, Aussie farmers requested a vehicle in which they could take their sheep to market and, on Sundays, their wives to church. The result was a Ute-a Coupe Utility "extra cab" sedan-based pickup. Ford also built Roadster Utilities in Australia until 193738, but Coupe Utilities continued until the end of Australian production in October 2016. Ford Australia's 1956 model shows what a prior generation looked like, but the 1957 Ford Ranchero would be the first modern American Ute.
For consignment a Ford Ranchero taken to the next level via the resto-mod way, and modernized to work with modern day traffic, performance and utilizes current technology. Essentially the best of both worlds...classic late 50's design, peppered with 2019 technology and some creative liberties taken in between! And it's a truck, I mean a car...no a truck...read on!
Exterior
Benefitting from a frame off restoration, this example is presented in what the builder states is in the "nude". All side trim, hood trim, door handles, tailgate latch and rear bumper have been shaved if you will. The headlights now halogen lights with LED imbedded turn signals have been "frenched" into the front fenders for a cleaner look. A custom stainless-steel tube grille with custom rear roll pan now announces your arrival. Wonderful show quality paint in Merlot Jewel Metallic bathes super straight steel that are minding their gaps very well throughout. The paint was wet sanded and cut and buffed like glass, and it is miles deep. The cab roof has been cut and now sports a canvas sliding rag top for some extra sun and fun during summer weather. To the rear where we see just a hint of fins and jet age taillights, and below dual chromed exhaust tips peeking out from the bottom. A lowering of the custom rear panel reveals a pristine texture sprayed bed, also in the Merlot Jewel Metallic. Rounding out the exterior are Coys custom C-57 polished alloy wheels with 17 inches up front and 18 inches on the rear. These are wrapped with 225/15/R17's upfront and 265/45/18's on the rear. We now have one cool cruising cat.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we are in custom built leather covered heaven. 2-tone Merlot and light tan adorn the stylistically modernized door panels, still with their crank for the windows and door handle. A slip inside and the leather Merlot inserts and light tan bolster buckets flank a custom center console complete with cup holders, a storage area/armrest and gearshift. Noted the driver's bucket is power adjustable. The dash has been simplified, still maintaining its eyebrow gauge cluster but now with VDO gauges. The remainder of the dash stays original with the airflow, lights, ignition remaining like original. Even the nifty Ranchero badging on the dash written in your grandmother's handwriting is attached next to the glovebox. This is now fronted by a Budnick billet and leather steering wheel. Near perfect merlot carpet floods the floors. Hold tight kids were gettin' ready to go hauling'...some ass.
Drivetrain
Flipping the hood forward what in front of our wandering does appear? Automotive jewelry, in the form of a brand new Ford racing 302ci crate motor with aluminum heads. A Holley street Avenger carb with an electric choke tops an Edelbrock high rise intake manifold, and big block 427 Cobra polished valve covers flank the intake. Plenty of other polished add ons produce more bling and 340hp. Strapped to the back is a freshly rebuilt World Class T-5 manual 5-speed tranny, with a King Cobra clutch and pressure plate. On the rear is a Ford 9-inch posi rear with a 3.50 gear ratio. An aluminum 3 row radiator, all polished, keeps everything cool under the hood. Remember diamonds are forever...
Undercarriage
All custom, all rust-free solid frame with lowering coil springs and shocks up front and 2 inch Atman drop spindles. For the rear we have more custom lowering leaf springs and shocks. A new power rack and pinion steering system, new tie rods, and a new power steering pump, as well as a totally newly rewired wiring harness (say that three times real fast!). We note also ceramic coated "shorty" headers which make their way into Flowmaster Delta Flow 40 series mufflers, and snake rearward to the chrome tips. This is totally one classy chassis.
Drive-Ability
I could not wait to get into this creation, and it was well worth it as it is like driving a piece of iconic retro sculpture, but with all the modern conveniences, save for the wipers and heater which are no longer present. This truck has plenty of power, sounds great, and handles like it's on rails with all that lowered suspension. A great cruiser, and awesome head turner.
The creative mind never ceases to amaze me, and this Ranchero from 1958 come 2019 is all buttoned up, and ready to have the key turned and enjoyed. All the "i's" have been dotted, and "t's" crossed, all custom, and all ready to do some hauling, or taking grandmother to church on Sunday. We have it made in the shade Daddy-O...
