1965 Ford Mustang Fastback
Take being in the right place at the right time, add a different design concept, and stir in little creative marketing, and you've got the huge success that is Mustang. In the Spring of 1964 Ford introduced the new 1964-1/2 Ford Mustang. Technically an early 1965 Mustang and based on the Falcon platform, a hardtop coupe and convertible were initially offered, with the 2+2 fastback coming out in time for the official opening of the 1965 model year. But by introducing it in Spring as a 1964-1/2 model, Ford avoided the noise of the new model year of all the other auto manufacturers and made introduction of the Mustang stand out.
Bordering on the term resto-mod with its updated blue respray, blackened chrome, American Racing black 5 spoke wheels and lower profile tires, this is a custom version of the 1965 fastback. The interior has taken on some changes as well, and overall it presents in good condition.
Exterior
This vehicle exterior has been customized with a Shelby front valance and GT style rear valance with dual exhaust tips. The front grille is without its bumper, and a mesh galloping pony less grill replaces the original. As noted, all brite work has been painted over with matte black. The blue respray shows some areas of orange peel (in particular the B pillar fastback louvers) as well as some areas of wear and scratching. Some chipping is noted in the gaps, which are fairly consistent on this car. New American Racing 17" wheels and radials are on all 4 corners. New seals for all glass doors and trunk are installed.
Interior
Simplified black vinyl door panels are sporting matte black handles and window cranks. Original style buckets in black are installed, and show wear, as well as some areas of the stitching that have been replaced, and some of it has come loose. These flank a long hump console all in matte black. The dash is a combination of the exterior blue, and blackened chrome, including the drilled 3 spoke 3 holes per spoke steering wheel, which appears a bit smaller than the original wheel. Nice new black carpeting floods the floors and has rubber floor mats hovering above it. Speaking of above, a new headliner nice and tight with insulation is above all this black and blue. A felted black cargo "box" has replaced the rear seats, and now is just a cargo area under the fastback glass. A note to the trunk which has also been resprayed and shows a new gas tank installed.
Drivetrain
A 302ci V8 sporting aftermarket ribbed valve covers, and a 4-barrel carburetor with an oval air cleaner atop, sits in a patina engine bay. This is backed up by a 3-speed automatic transmission, which is unknown as to its originality. Consigner states that upgrades have been made to the headlight and ignition systems as well as a better radiator, for great reliability.
Undercarriage
Mostly clean and rust free, replaced floorpans installed, torque boxes, and frame connectors. New fuel and brake lines, and a Detroit Speed and Engineering mini tub kit is installed on the rear so even wider tires could be used here. Other repairs are noted underneath some to the frame, however it is now structurally sound. 4-wheel disc brakes replace the drums, and the front discs sport an upgraded master cylinder with an adjustable prop. valve which bring this car to a quick hault. Shelby A arm drop is installed in front and gives this car a great stance as well as adding to handling capabilities.
Overall retaining mostly the original look, with some menacing black sprayed over chrome, new wheels, and disc brakes, now we have a more updated version of the 65 fastback, that provides reliability as well as great stance and looks.
