View Raw Image">When it comes to vintage automobiles, it is a fact that original vehicles from California and the West Coast of the United States have always been the most desirable the world over for many reasons; the mild climate and the lack of exposure to the elementsof nature that cause thingslike rust also many automotive trends started in California. The automobile is the perfect technological symbol of American culture, a tangible expression of our quest to level space, time, and class and a reflection of our relentless mobility, social and otherwise. You see automobiles advertised the world over described as California cars because at some point they were in California or drove through California. A true California car is one that was sold new in California and titled in California, one that has the original plates that are on that title is a true California car.We are liquidating a collection of 300 actual California cars. This is a collection that took 70 years to comprise. Most have the original paint and original California licence plates issued to them when they were new

This 1962 Ford F-100 Step-side wasspecial factory order #DSO720897 the break down of the order is (District Special Order) #72=San Jose Zone office 0897for the California Division of Forestrybased in the Sierra Nevada mountains. This particular truck was a very late 1962 production as noted by the 6 digit DSO coming going down the assembly line in August 1962 at the end of the 62 model the sold fleet order's are after all the retail dealer orders are filled andbefore the change over to the1963 modelsthat will hit the showrooms in early September 1962. The factory waits to fill the special ordered vehicles with special paint for state andgovernment, municipalities, PGE and such as this truck that was specialtybuilt for the California Divisionof Forestry. The special order paint vehicles are noted by the blank section for color color on vin tag.
This 1962 Ford F-100 Step-sideis an original California time capsule that has spent most of it's lifestorage with just 39200 actual miles it has averaged about 690 miles per year. The truck was deployed in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California most likely as a supervisors vehicle ordered with a Detroit locker rear special the mountains, which was a bid deal in 1962 as just about everything has always been two wheel drive and in areas where they need traction like the the Forest extra traction was a plus and 4x4 was still new as 4x4 trucks were not the norm as they are today even in the mountains. Ford had only offered 4x4 as an option 3 years earlier and when budgets are a concern with bids from government agencies. This particular truck was ordered with the big V-8 option the 292 Y-Block and the optional Fordamatic automatic transmission with the Detroit locker rear end.
This would be a very difficult one to duplicate with the original paint and interior that runs and drives as it did 57 years ago. The engine compartment is so clean it even has visible markings in wax pencil from when it went down the assembly line. This truck has a had a very easy and unique life in the forest of California as a supervisors truck and then the present owners father purchased the truck several decades agoat a State of Californiaauction for use at his summer home and it was stored in an under ground garage at his homeon the shores of Lake Tahoe. The family is not a bid fan of snow anddoes not go to the home in the winter so this truck was used as a run around while they summered at the lake. This truck has lived a very easy life stored in doors near Emerald Bay California. It was retired to the families private collection in 1985 which is the last time it was registeredfor the road.
It is ironic a vehicle ordered and built for the State of California's agency responsible for fire protection in State responsibilityAreas of California totaling 31 million acres, as well as the administration of the state's private and public forests to protect from wild fire the largest living things on earth the California Redwoods which stand nearly 400 feet tall in the deep forest of California has in fact spent most of it's life stored indoors'
Genealogy: Built late in the year of 1962 at San Jose assembly Milpitas California for shipment to Cal Fire in Sacramento to be modified for use in the Sierra Nevada mountains where it spent a great deal of time parked as there is so many places to drive to when you are in the remote Sierras. It was sold at State auction to present owner the (original first citizen owned) with fresh and like new looking matching blue California commercial plates that were first issued in California in 1970. The truck was stored at his summer home in a underground garage in Lake Tahoe and used very infrequently as a run around vehicle the Tahoe basin and exclusivelyin summers only. The home is not far from Squaw Valley home of the 1960 Olympicshowever the owner was not a fan of snow and was never at the home in winter. While it snowed out doors this was in a warm garage from time of purchase by the family who still owns it.It was retired to a indoor collection in a large building in the East Bay from 1985 till the present.
Mechanically: the largest optional V8 offered in 1962the 292 Y-blockthat fires up and runs great as a 39k mile engine should, it could use a good drive as any car that has sat for a long time a tune up with fresh plugs would it justice. The 292 was the longest - lived of the Y Blocks being used up to 1962 in cars and up to 1964 in Ford trucks and was still being built in South America into the 1980's. She runs great with no visibleleaks, strange sounds and seems to run very cool, the manual choke is working and once warmed up seems to run very well itwould be a recommendationto do a service on the engine as it has spent a lot of time sitting. The Fordamatic automatic shifts strong in all gears with no hard shifting. One issue this truck has as with most Fordamatics is they can pop into reverse when starting in park or drive when starting in neutral when starting and this one is no different
Exterior: This F-100 isin great original shape. The truck was born in what looks like Rangoon red and then paint by the Forestry department to match their fleet.I believe the grill and front bumper as well as rear step bumper were painted at that time so the complete truck was red, even the bed inside was painted as you can still make out hints of red on the bed wood as well as the bumpers which had a silver non skid finish which I believe is reflectorized for night driving. This truck has not been painted in 57 years even though you can see some light over spray from when the truck was modified by the Forestry department when first delivered to them. The paint is far from perfect with several minor dingsand dents and scratch's all over but all in all a unbelievable time capsule of a California commercial vehicle that was painted when Kennedy was in office and has lived through 10 Presidents. It has a verynicepatina and shine and overall very strait with no previous collision damage a very honest survivorthat has seen very little use in it's life time.
Interior: This F-100is in unbelievable condition as close to new as you will find. Again, everything is original and has never been restored let alone touched. Starting with the original cardboard headliner which is near perfect which is usually the first thing to disappearas an exampleof built in obsolescenceon most vehicles after years of exposure to the heat of the sun on the metal roof and the cold from the winter makes cardboard fatigueand fail however in the rare occurrencethe vehicle has been kept indoors it's entire life it will still look like what you see in this particular truck much the way it did over half a century ago in 1962. The original bench seat is as close to new as you will find in a 57 year old truck. The material still looks new and shiny with really no ware or imperfectionsat all. The metal dash is fresh and new looking the gauge cluster still looks new and all gauge, speedometer, odometer, temperature, volts meter all with in the classic Ford cluster are operating they way they were when new. The floor is solid however the original rubber mat is long gone. The entire interior including the dash, door panels are the natural metal in the original red a real California survivor.
NO RESERVE THIS ITEM WILL SELL TO THE FINAL BIDDER!
This listing includes well over 100 detailed photos and the vehicle has been described as descriptive as possible. If there is anything that is unclear or additional information is is need please don't hesitate to ask. Please ask any questions before bidding. Thanks and Good Luck

DETROIT LOCKER
Back in the day, if you needed the toughest, most-capable differential on the street, you ran a Detroit Locker. When you want the same kind of differential today, the choice is still a Detroit Locker. It's the most durable and dependable locking differential available.
The Detroit Locker is an automatic locking differentialthat is designed to lock both wheels of the rear axle together when torque is applied. It acts much like a spool that solidly connects both wheels together. In a turn, the unequal speed of the wheels forces the Detroit Lockerto disengage. Simple and effective.
A Little Locker History
The Detroit Locker was initially called a "Thornton NoSPIN Differential." Ray Thornton patented it in 1941 as device for use in six wheel (tandem drive) truck applications. The NoSPIN was manufactured by the Detroit Automotive Product Corporation and was used on American military vehicles during World War II.
After the war and into the 1960s, the Thornton NoSPIN was original equipment on light and medium duty trucks. That's right about when it got the Detroit Locker nickname—and when racers and high performance enthusiasts started to take an interest in it. They used the Detroit Locker on everything from road racers to NASCAR roundy-rounders and land speed record cars. In the late 1960s, some Ford performance cars had the Detroit Locker as a factory option. And to no one's surprise, the Detroit Locker was found in cars at virtually every drag strip in the nation.
How It Works
A Detroit Locker's major internal pieces are the side gears, outer springs, driven-clutch assemblies, spider assembly, and center cam. The center cam is held in the spider assembly with a snap ring, but it is free to rotate. The spider assembly takes the place of spider gears found in a conventional open differential.
The key to the unit is the series of teeth found on the spider assembly and the driven clutches on either side of the spider. The driven clutches ride between the side gears, which are splined to fit the axles and turn at the same speed as the axles. When a vehicle is under power and moving forward, both axles are locked in position and turn at the same speed. This means each driven wheel is getting approximately the same amount of traction.
A Detroit Locker will disengage when you take a corner. During a turn, the outside wheel must travel a distance greater than the inside wheel. This causes the wheels to turn at different speeds. The teeth on the Detroit Locker's spider and driven-clutch assemblies are cut at a negative angle. Here the center cam (inside the spider gear) locks into position and acts as a ramp to disengage the driven-clutch teeth from the spider gear. This allows the outside wheel to rotate faster around the corner. Once the driven-clutch rotation equalizes and both wheels are traveling at the same speed, the exterior springs force the teeth to mesh, or lock. That's why a Detroit Locker sounds and feels like it's locking and unlocking when you're turning.
