When it comes to vintage automobiles, California and the West Coast of the United States have always been the most desirable the world over for many reasons; the mild climate and the fact that many automotive trends started in California. The automobile is the perfect technological symbol of American culture, a tangible expression of our quest to level space, time, and class and a reflection of our relentless mobility, social and otherwise. You see automobiles advertised the world over described as California cars because at some point they were in California or drove through California. A true California car is one that was sold new in California and titled in California, one that has the original plates that are on that title is a true California car.We are liquidating a collection of 300 actual California cars.

Up for bid is a very RARE "DSO" dealer special ordered 1974 Ford F-250 4x4 Highboy pickup built in San Jose California 45 years ago this month. This truck was special ordered in Viking Red and is 1 of only 65 F250 4x4 Highboys built with those trim codes and "1 of only 201" special ordered 1974 F-250 Highboys with the Explorer option package. The truck was ordered out of the Salt Lake City zone District Sales office DSO #73 by Anaconda Motor Company of Anaconda Montana but the majority of this truck last nearly 50 years has been as a shop truck for the Freeman Texaco in Mt. Shasta California. This trucks special order was received on 4/04/74 and the car serialized on 5/07/74 bucked on 5/24/74 scheduled for build on 5/24/74 butF26YRU48140was actually built on 5/24/74 from the San Jose California assembly plant.F26 =F-250 4x4 Pickup truckY =360-2v EngineR =Built at San Jose CaliforniaU48140= Serial Number of this Ford truck scheduled for production at San Jose. This rare truck would bedifficultto duplicate with only 64 others just like it ever built I wonder how many of those are still around? For those of you who know original rust free California 4x4 trucks are getting difficult to find and most were sold to areas where they did not survive almost 50 years of life. This truck spent most of its life in the high desert of Mount Shasta City as the shop truck for a long gone Texaco Station "Fremans Texaco" on the doors, hand paintedprobablyover 4 decades ago. That type of original California history is difficult to duplicate. Yes Mount Shasta is a huge snow capped mountain most of the time but the actual city at the floor is high high desert and it rarely snows so the body is very solid with no sign of any rust. The truck is a very solid low mile survivor I would say it is about as rare as a special order 1974 Ford Bronco with a rare limited color and trim and rare Explorer package I wonder what something like would be worth I really have no idea just like this truck. I think it would be difficult for anyone to replace a vintage 4 wheel drive vehicle of any make because so few original examples exist . Any body can restore a truck but they are only original once. I know for a fact to find a solid 73- 77 1/2 Ford F250 High Boy is not going to be getting easier in the future as they don't make em anymore. This is a running and driving 45 year old truck . Please be realistic in yourexpectationsof what a 45 year old original truck runs and drives like. We got it running after long term storage. I am not clear on how long the truck had been parked. The fuel tank was clean and dry, the original carb was replaced by a brand new on from CArlos in Southern California, we replaced the fuel pump as well asservicingthe engine fresh oil, plugs, cap etc which I will go over in detail in the mechanical report
The EXTERIOR of the truck is that of what a true survivor vehicle is one that has lived nearly half a century that has let it be preserved mainly out doors. This trucks rare Viking Red #3560A paint is 45 years old. The truck does not look as it has ever had anycollisiondamage, how ever the truck has many dings and dents all over with manyscratches. Patina is very popular now and many people try and recreate patina on vintage vehicles, this truck is truly original Patina from the last 45 years. with that said it is still a solid rust free example.
The INTERIOR is also all original as it came from the San Jose California assembly plant on 5/28/74. The normal basic bench seat has the optional Explorer red cloth which looks like material from a Lincoln or a Thunderbird of the era. The passenger side looks very clean and hardly ever sat in because that is the case. The drivers seating surface is worn from the last 4 decades. The Explorer interior had some interesting to tone rubber floor mat in black and red as well as the door panels with black arm rest. The original white visors and the original white cardboard headliner is still intat and in good shape, the dash cover has some cracking. The drivers out side door handle is in/op it does open from the inside so the latch will need to bereplaced.
Mechanically: The original 360-2v the only V8 option in 1974 for the 4 wheel drive F-250 has been used very little in the last 45 years with an average mile per year of just over 2k miles. This truck has had many years of none use how ever the 91k mile 360 fires up and runs strong. The fuel system was gone through, the fuel tank was dry and clean however we replaced theoriginalcarburetor with a original factory replacement as well as a brand new fuel pump. We changed all of the fluids with all new and new fresh filters. The engine fires up and runs strong, it does have a slight exhaustleak on one of the manifold that is common on these how ever the more I have driven it it is not asnoticeable. The pipes at one point had some Cherry-bomp Glass packs fitted which gives it a powerful sound.
