1966 Ford Mustang Convertible
Award-winning Show CarEVERY component rebuilt, replaced, or refurbished!
Factory C code 289 V8 with C4 automatic, power steering, factory console Always a California car
About 140 miles since COMPLETE restoration!
PLEASE look at linked photo album, videos, and write-up documenting everything about the car!
Up for sale is my 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible that has been in my family since 2005. The current restoration was completed in February 2016, and it's been to a handful of local car shows ever since.
During the restoration, EVERY part of the car was restored, re-plated, repainted, and/or replaced. NOTHING went untouched, including the entire engine/engine bay, interior, wiring, top/frame, suspension, brakes, wheels, exhaust, etc. If a part could be removed and restored/replaced, it was. Not a dime was spared! Please be sure to look at video tours of the car, as well as a detailed write-up and additional photos. And please let me know if you need additional photos or info.
VIN Breakdown:6 = 1966; R = San Jose; 08 = Convertible; C = 289 2v V8; 204,642 = consecutive number

Here are some major* details about the restoration
*I'm definitely forgetting things. This was a long-term restoration and I know that there are many more details I'm forgetting.Exterior: Painted PPG Ferrari Russo Red (one of the best paint jobs I have ever seen on a vintage Mustang); both bumpers are OEM Ford; all emblems are new; all lights/bezels new; new GT fog lamp grill; new rocker moldings/trim as well as wheel well trim pieces. I have pictures showing what was done during the paint job.
ALL glass/windows removed. Side glass was disassembled. Vent windows re-chromed, and all other trim pieces (including windshield trim) re-plated/polished. New Ford windshield with premium seal and two different types of sealant. New glass tape for all side glass, as well as window regulators for front windows. Countless hours were spent making sure all of the glass lines up and operates as it should (looks and works better than factory).
Convertible top was completely disassembled. The top frame was stripped and powder coated satin black and has new tack strips. Brand new cloth top installed along with plastic window and well liner. Newer Ford hydraulic pump already installed. I installed new cylinders and hoses, and flushed with new fluid. New voltage regulator in engine bay, and convertible top switch in dash.
Interior:COMPLETELY restored Pony/deluxe interior. All new: TMI upholstery and foam, door panels and ALL parts, dash pad, quarter panel upholstery. Seat belts restored by Snake-Oyl in Texas. All metal dash parts powder coated. All chrome parts (including console) re-chromed. ALL interior panels covered in upholstery-grade factory-matching vinyl (console, door skins, dash, upper rear quarter panels, etc. The only 'painted' part of the interior are the windshield A-pillars. Haneline engine-turned 6 gauge cluster. All new interior chrome (ash trays, rear view mirror, visor brackets, handles, knobs, glove box door, shifter handle, etc.). Rebuilt automatic shifter with re-chromed shaft. TWO hidden speakers up inside dash, as well as kick panel speakers. Heater box is 100% rebuilt with new core, seals, and NOS heater motor.
There is a new, modern radio hidden in the glove box, as well as an XM portable radio hook-up in the console (XM satellite antenna on top of dash speaker grill).Interior floor pan is covered with two layers of insulation (one dyna-mat style for sound, and the plush style for heat. New carpet. New sill plates. FULL interior hardware kit from AMK products used for re-assembly. Steering wheel is from Mustang Depot and is a Shelby-style with WORKING HORN!
ENGINE:The engine was rebuilt in the late 1990s and never driven. When I began the restoration, I had a machine shop in Orange County, California, disassemble the engine. They installed all new gaskets, seals, valves, lifters, and related parts. Rotating assembly was left alone. Polished Edelbrock performer intake installed, with 500 CFM Edelbrock carburetor. Mallory Ready-to-Run distributor (no box needed, just a coil), along with custom-cut Mallory wires. Heddman ceramic coated headers with 2.5" exhaust and Flowmaster mufflers (stage 3 I believe), with H-pipe.
Engine was color-matched to exterior paint color and painted with automotive grade paint/etching primer. All other parts were powder-coated to match. Valve covers are new from Ford Motorsport and I had them polished. A new gasket set was used for the entire engine, and it doesn't leak even after sitting for an extended period of time.
The transmission is a C4 automatic that was completely rebuilt at a local shop in San Diego. It also doesn't leak, which is rare for a C4. I installed a B&M external transmission cooler in front of the radiator. The driveshaft is original, and was disassembled for powder-coating, then I had it balanced, along with new U-joints. The rear-end was taken out and the third member was checked. The housing was powder coated, and new seals/gaskets were installed. New axle bearings were also installed.
A new, reproduction fuel tank/sending unit were installed, along with a Holley Red electric red fuel pump. New fuel line to the front of the car. All flexible portions of fuel system are fuel injection hose/clamps (new fuel is not good for regular rubber fuel hose).
A larger Griffin cross-flow aluminum radiator was installed with special mounting brackets top and bottom. I had a local shop relocated one of the holes and make a custom shroud for a SPAL electric fan (controlled with thermostat).
SUSPENSION: Every bit of the suspension on this car was rebuilt. ALL new upper and lower control arms, bushings, tie rods, etc. Front springs are from National Parts Depot and have a 1" drop. Spring perches are new, along with all other replaceable items (bushings, etc.). 4.5 mid-eye leaf springs from Mustangs Plus (with 1" drop) in the rear. KYB shocks at all four corners. Polished Total Control Products strut brace in engine bay. 1" powder coated front sway bar.
Brakes: Rebuilt disc brake calipers and new PowerSlot rotors in the front, along with a dual master cylinder and ALL new brake lines and front/rear hoses. Front spindles and rear backing plates powder coated. New rear drums installed, and all brake components replaced (hardware, wheel cylinders, etc.).
Steering:Flaming River steering box installed, along with ALL new components (cylinder, control valve, hoses, pump, etc.). NOTE: I have NOT finished hooking up the steering (just need to install belt, finalize hose connections, and flush).
Wheels/Tires:Tires are Hankook (about the only 'name brand' for white stripe tires nowadays) and this is the second set (first set replaced under warranty). They are hard to keep bright white. The tires on the car are less than two years old. The wheels are reproduction Styled Steel wheels with new lugnuts and center caps.
ELECTRICAL:Brand new EZ Wiring (similar to Painless) 20+ circuit harness installed. Power convertible top, electric fuel pump, and electric cooling fan are on their own circuits/relays. All wiring to the front of the car is hidden under the front fenders, after traveling through the firewall. It is protected in wire wrap, inside PVC pipe. It then feeds into the engine bay where it's needed. The starter solenoid is relocated so it's out of sight. The alternator is a Powermaster 100 amp 1-wire, so no external voltage regulator. Battery is new from Costco, with side posts and manual disconnect. A master maxi fuse for the ENTIRE electrical system is hidden for theft purposes.
EVERYTHING electrical functions as it should - you would never even know the wiring was not factory unless I told you. Literally, everything works like factory: turn signals, flashers (switch in glove box), interior underdash lights, ALL dash knobs/switches, wipers, fog lamps, starting system, gauges, etc. More details can be discussed in person. Even the horn works. I installed new Hella horns, and it literally sounds like a new Ford.
Other notes: As mentioned above, the power steering system is not 'finished'. I have all the parts (and then some), including belts, hoses, etc. It was one of the very last things to finish with the restoration. With the Flaming River box, I didn't really feel the need for power steering, so I got sidetracked. The fuel gauge also has a hard time registering the exact fuel level. It's a NEW gauge, with a new sending unit (I've tried two of them), and it just never reads the right level - I think the sending unit arm needs to be adjusted. Since this is a show car, and I always top off the tank before storage, it's never been a huge deal. As for tuning/timing, I had a local shop set the initial timing and make minor adjustments on carburetor (they didn't mess with the jets). I had planned on getting a better tune after the car was driven more, but never got to that point.

Transaction will take place during normal business hours and my bank will verify all funds. No wire transfer, Nigerian scams, Bitcoin, trades, personal checks, or low-ball offers made after agreed-upon price.
Please ask ANY and ALL questions before proceeding with offer/purchase. This is a VERY high-quality restoration that is not typical for vintage Mustangs. I have two Mustangs, it makes the most sense to sell this one, as long as the price is right. I am not in a rush to sell, and know that a car like this is very hard to come by. Please don't waste my time (or yours) with low-ball offers. Thank you!
