After the introduction of the Shelby Mustang, Ford thought it would be a good idea to rent these new performance models out to anyone with $17 and a Hertz Sports Car Club membership. That's right, if you were 25 in 1966, had club membership with Hertz, and could afford to spend $17/day, Hertz would put you behind the wheel of a new Shelby Mustang! Naturally, this led to some weekend shenanigans, but worked wonderfully to promote the new high-performance Mustang...to car enthusiast buyers. Of course, many of these cars were wrecked, ragged out, or otherwise destroyed, but some remained. This particular 1966 Mustang is not a real Rent-A-Racer, but it was intentionally built to closely resemble and perform like one. Hertz attributes aside, this Mustang has lots of good stuff going for it. The exterior has been painted to resemble the iconic Shelby GT350H. And it looks great! The black paint has a deep gloss shine to it and contrasts as well as ever with the gold stripes. This paint job is done well, with only minor scratches visible. The body itself appears to be very clean and straight underneath-it is hard to hide bad bodywork with black! In addition to the GT350H decal package, the Magnum 500 wheels are outfitted with Hertz center caps to complete the look. Step inside, and it feels like 1966. The interior of this car alone speaks for what the intended purpose of a Rent-A-Racer was! Complete with the R-code roll bar and rear shelf, it is plain to see that this car means business. Perhaps one of the coolest features of this car is the correct Shelby dash-mounted tachometer. This tach is functional, and a correct accessory that completes the look of the car. As a whole, the interior is in excellent condition and has been made to look mostly original with the exception of a modern radio and speakers, which have been seamlessly integrated and would not appear out of place to the average enthusiast. Additionally, the steering wheel is the Shelby woodgrain wheel which feels excellent in your hands. Under the hood is a Ford 302 V8 with a real Shelby "Cobra" intake manifold, roller rockers, a mild cam, headers, and a 7.5-quart oil pan. The engine runs great, and the dual exhaust has a very nice tone to it. Hooked up to the 302 is a 4-speed "Toploader" manual transmission. The power meets the road at the hands of a Ford 9-inch rear end. The underside of this car is just as clean as the top! Any metal work that may have been done to this car was clearly done professionally, as the underside looks great. The fit and finish is excellent quality, even underneath, which tells you a lot about the quality of the restoration this car received. If you're looking for a fun car to take to shows or a high-quality head turner, this is the Mustang for you! This provides just as much entertainment as a real Shelby without the worry of it being an original, and for a lot less money. A turnkey weekend warrior, all this Mustang needs is a new owner!
