Car description |

If you look at the red car in the photos, it's such a fun car to drive and gathers crowds at cruises and car shows and long looks where ever you drive it. I've owned more cars than I care to admit, this is my all time favorite and why I've owned it for so many years. The car in this listing was one I began to build in 2004.
This car started its life as a 1990 Mazda Miata. Now it looks like a 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby Convertible Roadster. When you look at the photos, you will see the red car...which by the way, IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS AUCTION for you maniacs that would give me a hard time saying it is. It's shown as an example of how this could look finished. The red one is my other car. The differences are the Eleanor hood, chin spoiler and the Shelby trunk spoiler additions on the car in this listing. I've owned the red one for 15 years and this was supposed to be built for my wife.....my now ex-wife. Health issues regrettably force the abandonment of this project. It has sat in my climate controlled building since 2007. Time to move on, so here we are.
All the steel is hand fabricated. Although the fenders and quarters and doors at a glance look like a Mustang, they are much smaller by nearly all dimensions. It took a lot of fabricating to get the scale correct for the short wheelbase. The Miata sheet metal was basically removed for this project and new sheet metal from the wheel houses up was created. The car was built in Florida, using a rust free Miata donor car. Why go through an endeavor of this magnitude with a poor donor. Once the cars width was established, it made using Mustang bumpers and headlight buckets, grille etc...possible. The only fiberglass is the trunk and the Eleanor hood and that's because the hood and was actually made longer than a Mustang as there was no room for the Mustang Apron that fits between the windshield and the rear of the hood. The engine compartment was opened up to allow for the Mustang 5.0 Engine. The engine was built locally and was bored, new crank, new pistons, rebuilt heads. All stock except for a mild cam. The engine was out of a 1988 Mustang GT. It's never been started since we got it back. The manifold is an Edelbrock and the carb is an older Holley that was gone through with a rebuild kit. The Transmission is an AOD automatic that was also rebuilt and hasn't had fluids in it as well.
There are a ton of parts that go with this project to nearly complete it. Bumpers, interior, headlight assemblies. Tail light assemblies(sequential), headers, and so much more. It does not have a windshield. We took it out for easier sanding and it was scratched up anyway. There is no top for it, it was in poor condition and they are so cheap on ebay, we opted to dispose of it and deal with it later in the build, the bows and skeletal items are still in the car, just the vinyl was removed.
The really difficult fabrication part of this project is complete and it would take very little to prep it for paint. The sheet metal work, the 65 Mustang core support, the fiberglass work, the extremely difficult doors and the motor mounts are done as well. Still, this isn't for the faint of heart. It's far more difficult a build to make something other than what is was originally. To make a Camaro into a Camaro, is kind of like paint by numbers. This is much more ambitious and much more rewarding.
The car is stored in Northeastern Wisconsin, in a climate controlled building. I have owned this car for many years and it has lived in this dedicated facility for most of those years I've had it. Pickup will be from that location. Title is clear, in my name and in hand. It is titled as a 1990 Miata.
I am also putting the car up for sale locally and reserve the right to end this listing early.
