The 1940 Ford Pick Up: The Family Background
My name it Tom Nichols, and I have been hired to sell this truck for the family. I have used my digital camera to take the pictures that you see listed. The pictures have not been photo chopped or re touched in anyway to make this vehicle look better. This will be an exciting auction. Most of the time, I have sold cars in their original state. This vehicle combines, original lines, with modern equipment and a lifetime love affair with this family truck.
After talking to the family, it seems that this truck was quite the family heirloom over the years. The son tells the story about this truck from the beginning, but I will hit the high points for you. I might add, that this truck has always lived in Sunny Southern California from the very beginning. My dad bought this truck around Thanksgiving of 1940. I remember when we went to the dealership to take it for a test drive, it was pouring rain that day. It was hard for all four of us to fit in the cab, but we did, and my father drove us to the end of Union Pacific Rail Yard. Needless to say, he bought it and we have used it for decades. My father named the business HH DEEMER AND SON. The name is still around since it was sold in 1980. The business was in the Crown Coach Building, where my grandfather and my father in the 1920's built seats. Made many seats for many City and Government Agencies, vehicles, including many famous celebrities, such as, Clark Gable's custom built Packard. Even the seat in this truck was built by my father and has never been removed or rebuilt.
After many years of use and always being cared for we noted that it was no longer practical in the modern world. We decided to make some custom changes and you will find out what we did.
So, Now, What Makes This Pick Up Go?
Still in the family, but the younger generation thought to make it bigger and better. So here is what was done. First was decided to paint it Porsche Red, that was later, but decided on first. It has a Chevy Column tilt steering. A 505 steering box. It has a 4 inch dropped front axle. Front disc brakes conversion with Volare Rotors. Special engineered mounts for engine and transmission on chassis. A 350cc V8 engine which we got out of a 1994 GM station wagon and had it rebuilt before installing. Used a matching 350 Transmission. Front disc brakes were installed to make it more up to date. It has an 8 inch Ford Rear end with rear drum brakes. Single stage Centari Acrylic enamel paint in the 1996 Porsche Red. The entire truck body and chassis is all steel, the left rear fender is fiberglass, the original could not be brought back. The dashboard is original, has one wiper blade for the windshield. Complete 12 volt system and starts right up every time with out a single hiccup. The truck bed is removable is needed. The truck bed is made of 3 & 5/8 thick mahogany flooring and looks stunning and makes it practical for hauling if needed with scratching the truck bed itself. It has the original tail gate. We did note a small paint stretch mark up on the top of the cab corner. There is a lot of information here and what a transformation. If you're thinking about this custom truck, don't hesitate to ask any questions, and please, if you would like please send us any offers to us and we will present them to the family, thank you for your time.
What Was Ford Thinking in 1940?
Ford redesigned the 1940 Ford half-ton pick up along the lines of its 1939 cars, creating what many consider to be the most beautiful trucks of their time.Ford's Chief Designer, E. T "Bob" Gregorie, gave the all-new 1940 light-duty trucks the crisp, clean "prow front" styling of the 1939 to 1940 passenger cars. The cabins were sturdier and wider and windshields were fixed. The undercarriage carried the "X" frame heavy 10 gauge steel . Direct competition was Chevrolet, however, Dodge was doing well with their trucks, then International, Reo, Mack and even Studebaker entered the truck ranks.
