Car description

1938 Ford Deluxe Tudor Door Sedan

Thank you for looking. This ford is model 81-A with the 221 Flat head V8, 3 speed manual on the floor. It is in original condition with only one addition. A modern coolant temp gauge has been added for better accuracy and ease of viewing. The car is complete and is rust free. It runs and drives and the engine purrs. Clutch and brakes are good. It cannot be validated but the car appears to have been repainted some 50 years ago in lacquer. It shines but has several chips in it as seen in the pictures. The area under the gas cap also has lifted due to spillage when filling (if you have ever used a modern pump to fill these cars you know why). It has been a garage kept car and it shows in its condition. The Chrome is good as is all the glass and lenses. The only real aged piece of the car are the running boards which the rubber is dried out and flaking. There is one crease in the driver's side hood side chrome where someone who does not know how to close the hood pushed down on it where they shouldn't of.

I recently purchase the car at an estate auction of a local man who collected pre 50s fords. There are some unique features of this car.

All four windows roll down properly including the vent function which rolls them forward a few inches before going down.

The wheels are the optional artillery style with optional rust free covers and rings (moon caps and beauty rings)

The rear trunk key cover is still present as are all the proper emblems.

It is a factory radio car. The Radio is included but was removed. It is not known if it was repaired or needed repairing but will be included in the sale.

The tires are good, the battery and ignition pieces show new and the engine compartment is complete and original. There is no spare tire and it is not known if the car came with one. Exhaust is good.

I was told the motor was refreshed but I have no documentation to what was done. Looking in the engine compartment visually you can see how clean it is and evidence of new gaskets and wires.

The car has 84K original miles on it. It had been driven only a few miles every few months. I personally drove this car for 2 hours around town taking people for rides and it runs great. Probably the most exercise it had in a while.

WHY SELLING? I was recently divorced and live in a different state. The location I was planning on storing the car has been sold so the car needs a new home since I do not have the room for it I was planning on nor do I want the car to be outdoors. It would be a great injustice to it.

Please feel free to ask questions or call me 434-942-2916. She needs a good home.

FORD HISTORY ON THE CARS

The Ford line of cars were updated in 1937 with one major change — the introduction of an entry-level 136CID (2.2L) V8 in addition to the popular 221CID (3.6L) flathead V8. The model was a refresh of its predecessor, the Model 48 (itself based on the Model 40A), and was the company's main product. At the start of production, it cost $850. The Ford Line bore several model numbers during this period: For domestic 1937 production in the United States Ford Model Numbers for 85hp V-8 equipped cars was Model 78 and 60hp V-8 cars was Model 74.

The 1937 Ford featured a more rounded look with fine horizontal bars in the convex front and hood-side grilles. The front grille was V-shaped, rather than following the fenders into a pentagon shape, as on the 1936 model. Faired-in headlights were a major modernization found on both the Standard and DeLuxe trim versions, though much of the rest of the design was shared between Ford's two lines. A larger water pump was used to help aid in cooling. 'Slantback' sedans gained a rear trunk door, though space was limited, and 'Trunkback' versions continued gaining sales. The station wagon had seating for eight passengers. A 4-door "convertible sedan" with roll up windows was offered in small numbers in the DeLuxe series.

1938

The 1938 recession hurt sales, as did Ford's continuing of the 1937 cars, including most body panels. 1938 DeLuxe models were differentiated with a heart-shaped grille, though standard models retained the 1937 look. The Headlight Bezels and lenses are unique to these models. Only a V8 was offered, either a 60hp V8 or an 85hp V8. A new dash was used, with recessed controls for safety. A flush mounted radio was also added and the spare tire compartment was moved inside the trunk.

All Deluxe and some Standard body styles equipped with the powerful 85 horsepower V-8 engines and were designated as the Ford Model 81A. The Standard body styles equipped with the 60 horsepower V-8 and designated as the Ford Model 82A.
