Dyno Sheet SELLER REMARKS The early '70s were a time where Mustangs were a love-it-or-hate-it proposition. and a big part of that was federal and insurance company mandates that killed horsepower. But if you like the look. perhaps this 1973 Mustang convertible will remedy the horsepower complaint; it's got a 460 cubic inch big block. 625 horsepower. and the chassis to put it to work. Interested? I thought so. The extra size on the '71-73 Mustangs isn't a big deal with all that horsepower on tap. and it gives you the freedom to focus on the design. which really is quite handsome. Smooth. sleek. and nicely finished. particularly in convertible form. this pony car looks fast without doing a lot of advertising. The medium blue paint is a nice touch. keeping it subtle without so much as a set of stripes or a rear wing. The low-rise cowl hood is mandatory to clear the big engine. but I bet the builder only installed it out of necessity. not style. The result is a low-key car that could rightly be called a sleeper. It's nicely turned out. with crisp body lines and paint with just the right shine to look right on the 42-year-old sheetmetal without advertising too loudly that there's a lot of money tied up in the build. A chrome bumper replaces the standard-issue urethane piece and adds some welcome contrast and works with the matching chrome rear unit. too. Original emblems are in their proper places. along with a standard gas cap. and only the master cut-off switch and fuel pressure gauge give things away. The interior. despite the NHRA-legal 6-point cage. still looks pretty stock. High-back buckets wearing factory-style blue upholstery are fitted with 5-point harnesses. but they're easy to stash out of sight if you're not running hard. The doors open and close easily and have full door panels. the floors are carpeted. and. well. it doesn't really look much like a race car in there. A wood-rimmed steering wheel warms things up and the factory gauges are joined by a monster tach and auxiliary gauges in the center stack. The odometer shows 30. 60 miles. and we believe that to be an authentic reading. so you know this sucker's clean. There's a trick shifter for the C6 3-speed automatic underneath. and I'm sorry. but you'll have to somehow entertain yourself without a radio in this car. It does. however. have a nice-fitting convertible top and a nicely finished trunk with a battery box. but nothing truly radical. The built 460 cubic inch V8 cranks out 625 horsepower on pump gas. neatly solving the '73 Mustang's power deficiency. It's a neat fit thanks to the redesign being engineered to hold a 428. and the aluminum-headed engine isn't that much heavier than any of the factory offerings. so handling isn't ruined. either. It's definitely got a big cam in it. but it runs on pump gas and drives in traffic without major complaints and with power steering. it's still easy enough to maneuver. A big Holley carb feeds it and a set of long-tube headers provide a spectacular soundtrack out back. The C6 3-speed automatic transmission is built to take the abuse and there's a Strange 9-inch rear end with 4. 11 gears on a Traction-Lok rear end and 33-spline axles. so don't worry too much about breakage. Even the rolling stock is reasonable. tucking under the fenders and using shiny aluminum wheels and 26x7. 10-15 front and 29x12. 50-15 rear Mickey Thompson tires. Street legal and happy on pump gas. this is a wolf in sheep's clothing. We guarantee nobody is going to scoff at this big Mustang. not if they know what's good for them.
