1912 Ford Model T Touring Car
My 1912 Ford Model T touring car is an older restoration in good condition. 1912 was the last year of the all-brass T's. Ford made improvements to the T's as they went along, and the 1912 cars are the most durable and reliable of the all-brass models. This car is perfect to enjoy brass car touring for beginners as well as veteran enthusiasts! The car looks good and runs and drives very well.
The car appears to have been restored sometime in the 1960s or 70s and has had good care since. It has always been garaged to my knowledge. There is no corrosion on the body whatsoever and the wood framing is in good, solid condition. The brass was lacquered when it was restored and is complete, correct, and in good condition. There are a couple of small dings and there is minimal flaking of the lacquer on a couple of pieces, but the appearance is good. See photos. The upgraded canvas top is elegant and in very good condition. The paint is good, but shows normal aging with a few blemishes.
The leather interior is in good condition but shows typical minor wear from use. See photos. The seats are firm and supportive with good covers. The brass steering wheel and hand controls with black rubber knobs are correct. The instrumentation includes a Stewart Model 26 speedometer and a brass clock. A manually operated windshield wiper has been added for the driver. The firewall is a type of laminated wood that was commonly used back when this car was restored. This automobile has the patina of a car that has been driven but cared for over the years; a character that can only be acquired through careful use and age.
The engine is the original engine of the car (#135935, built July 1912) and is in good original condition. This is a closed-valve engine, which eliminates manual valve oiling and the mess of an open-valve engine. It starts and runs well, with no smoke or funny noises. The coils are correct and in good condition. The original carburetor is in good condition and has been upgraded with a modern fuel entry with shut off valve for convenience and safety. The fuel tank has been cleaned and sealed, and my mechanic installed a new solid brass sediment bulb as well as a new fuel line. The radiator and cooling system are in good condition. The transmission operates well and is quiet and smooth.
The rear end is a later rear, vintage 1915 to 1919 for touring reliability. These were the rear ends that were used for the rest of the model T cars because their design proved to be robust and trouble-free. The original gears are in good condition and run smoothly and quietly. The front end and steering box are in good condition. All wheel bearings are in good condition and run smoothly. The wood wheels are tight and strong. The rear tires have excellent tread but are beginning to show some sidewall cracking. The front tires are the original smooth type and are in good condition. This is a very solid and responsive setup to drive, yet delivers the vintage experience. This is a reliable, easy car to drive, and ready to go!
The car is an excellent candidate for a new restoration to a high level, or is ready to enjoy as a nice driver on tours. Be prepared for many thumbs up out on the road.
