This 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 was about 100 miles away when we got the call to sell it andnaturally. I offered to drive it back to Automania World Headquarters here in Grants Pass. How cool was that going to be? What struck me about driving the car was how universal everyone’s reaction was to it. the thumbs up. questions about the year and how long I had had it (I fibbed). But I waited till I showed it to “Mike”. my resident “I really want that car” barometer car guy here in town at the local transit station before deciding if this was a car we were going to get excited about. Mike actually got off his stool and came outside. a strong sign. He loved the hood and when I told him that the car was an original 78. 19 mile Texas car that had a recent repaint and the hood replaced. that it had the original 312 Ford motor. original interior (except for the front gold inserts). he got down right excited. I knew the hook was set so I told him I had the original wheels and hub caps. the original hood and wheel spats. I showed him pictures of the car two years ago with the plastic seat covers from the selling dealer still inplace. I knew we were on the right track. The present owner of the car is the third owner from new. He bought the car about a year ago out of Texas where it had been all of it’s prior life. To get it back to Oregon. it was driven from Texas. When it got here. there was no question about the need of suspension work. so the front end was rebushed. new coils and springs installed along with sway bars front and rear. The front is a little lower then stock for the “look” and a set of chrome wheels. hub caps and new radial tires installed. A new exhaust system was needed and sounds good. A set of T-Bird valve covers were installed (have the stock set) and the dealer installed. original. non-working. AC system was hauled out and put in boxes. The stock tail lights were replaced. again saved. the bumper over riders removed. saved and another set of quarter glass windows bought at a swap meet placed in the trunk. The all medal hood was installed and is remotely operated by a set of electronic rams. One button for up. a second for going down. Perfect for keeping the kids entertained. A late model radio is in the glove box. but everything else worked as it should. even the fan for the heater blew low and high. The paint is not highest quality finish. but a local paint shop said that it could be cut and buffed. When the steering wheel is turned lock to lock. power steering fluid leaks out either form the pump or a hose. Straight ahead does not seem to cause the issue. Four wheel drum brakes feel like you are rubbing wood against something. nothing like power disk brakes of today. Call and speak with Paul at 541-479-8888 if you have any questions.
