We had a lot of fun with our first Storm Trooper build and thought what better way to kick off the 2017 Bronco season with another. This ’76, optioned with Factory Power Steering & Disc Brakes, came to us with a freshly rebuilt 302. The ’76 model year is our most requested year thanks to the available options and the classic fuel caps rather than the 77 fuel doors. This one has of course many upgrades beyond what Ford delivered it with 41 Years ago.
In order to pull off the ‘Storm Trooper’ look, a complete repaint in Ford’s Oxford White was undertaken. This was done with a quality 2-stage base/clear system. The Bronco really looks nice with clean lines and a unique look. With color keyed black accents this Bronco really stands out. We replaced all the factory lighting with new units. The headlights are LED Projectors, the same technology used in 2017 higher end cars & trucks. All of the marker lights & turn signals feature new lenses. We also replaced the front turn signals with the smaller and more tasteful ’66 units for a MUCH cleaner look. We really like the material and quality of the Black Diamond denim tops from Tom’s Broncos. This soft top looks great and the windows zip in and out easily so you can quickly remove them when the weather permits AND get them back in when it doesn’t!
Inside, the whole tub was stripped and professionally lined with Raptor Bed Liner for easy clean up and to preserve the new floor pans for another 40 years. The 6-point roll bar was also lined for good looks and offers protection from both roll over as well as a rear end collision by extending beyond the rear seat. The dash was stripped and repainted body color while the factory instrument cluster was replaced with a brand new unit. The steering wheel was long since changed out so we upgraded to an extremely nice Sparco unit that is wrapped in Leather with a red ‘Center’ stripe. It features an aluminum construction with a white inlay. This is one of the coolest wheels we have yet to see for the Bronco. The seats are new units from Tom’s that have their ‘Denim’ upholstery that will stand up to both sun and rain. The fronts fully recline and also have plenty of room for even the tallest drivers. The rear seat folds flat then tumbles forward giving you full use of the bed area. This is great for Costco runs or big coolers. For back seat passengers this seat features head rests that really are important for whiplash protection, especially if you have younger children. The front seats have 3 point retractable seat belts, the rear has brand new lap belts.
Under the hood the 302 was just rebuilt days before we bought it. It is a stock rebuild with the exception of the aluminum intake and Brand New Demon carburetor. It does breath through dual exhaust and has factory electronic ignition for better power. The engine fires up easily and sounds great. Unfortunately, we did not get any receipt documentation when we purchased the Bronco.
This Bronco still wears its original Power Front Disc Brakes and Power Steering. These 2 options are really must-haves with upgraded suspension and larger tires.
Since this is a 1976 model it came with heavy duty ‘Y’ style steering. This style steering places the linkage up higher and out of danger to low lying objects. The heavy duty Dana 44 was also standard with the 302 as was the heavy duty 9” rear differential.
We are big believers in the Toyo AT II tires on our Broncos. We end up paying almost double what a standard tire would cost. They really do drive well with excellent off road traction. With their squared side walls, durable 10-ply construction and 60k mile tread-wear warranty they work excellent and will be with you for many years. These Moto Metal Wheels are one of our Go-To wheels for their good looks, high quality and excellent fitment.
In order for this to be a real driver, you must be able to see at night. Factory lighting on these Broncos was not considerably better than the gas lanterns of the 1920’s. These LED Projector headlights are the same technology used in high end cars in 2017. They easily light up the darkest of highways or trails. They are powered by their own wiring harness for better reliability and to handle the power requirements of these modern units.
After all this work we finished it off with a new windshield since that is what you will be looking at most of the time. The side windows were freshly tinted and really modernize the look. New door weather-strip, window channel weather-strip and more were used.
