This auction is for a Magnum Gt designed by Custom Classic back in the mid to late 80's. It was designed around the Ferrari Dino and was created by Lyle Mader of Custom Classics. There was approximately only 80 of these cars built and they are very rare. When Mr Mader 1st decided to design and build these cars they were meant to be sold as completed cars as almost all of them were. But in an effort to raise some money approximately the 1st 5 were sold as a kit car. This is one of those 5. All the components for this car were purchased in around 1985 by a gentleman from Chester County Pa. Upon gathering everything, he never got around to working on the project and it set in his garage till I was able to buy it.I heard about it in around 2001 when I purchased it. Everything was still either crated or boxe, including the body. Upon getting it home it became a father and son project with us completing it around 2003. This car is titled as a 2003 special Interest.
Everything in this car was either new or rebuilt. The body on this car is made of hand laid fiberglass. it is a one piece design with everything from the front to the back and floorpans to the roof being of one piece. Within this fiberglass is a full steel birdcage structure providing an extremely strong and safe car. While talking to My Mader back in the early 2000's he claimed that a number of these cars were made for racing and one upon being involved in a wreck and rolled numerous times and other then some scratches the body came out of it with no cracks or structural damage. I had this car at the Carlisle Kit car and Import show after completing it. A gentleman came up to me and said he was the person who did a lot of the design work and fiberglass work on this body while working at a fiberglass shop in California back in the 80's. He introduced himself as Chuck Beck. The designer and builder of the famous Beck Spyder's.https://www.motortrend.com/news/2002-beck-spyder/ The quality and fit of this body is extremelygood.
When this body was ordered from Custom Classics it came in a red gel coat. My son and I were not happy with the red and I repainted it yellow. In the process we changed some of the lighting. Instead of the tail-lightsand side maker lights being mounted in rubber grommetsI was able to mold these lights as well as the front turns and Pia driving lights right into the body giving it a much more factory appearance. This car is a one of a kind piece. You will never see another one with these modifications.
The paint and body on this car are still in outstanding condition with really no flaws at all. This car has never been in the rain and has been kept in a heated garage. Before and after completing this car with my son I had completed numerousrestorations and car builds that have won AACA Grand national awards as well as cars featured in National magazines such as Super Chevy, Rod and Custom, Antique Automobile and others.
The engine is an early Mazda 13B 4 port engine that was custom built by Tri-Point of California. It was street ported and runs a Holley 600 Cfm carb with a custom exhaust that was coated by Jet hot. The engine runs extremely well and is quite fast, especiallyin an all fiberglass car. For ignition I used an MSD box with direct fired ignition. This provides the leading spark plugs with a very hot spark as it by- passes the distributor. It also provides a more reliable spark at the higher RPMs that these engines are known for. If you never driven a rotary powered car they are just a blast to drive. About 3 years ago I had this engine rebuilt by Dave Bellinger at KDR Rotary now Speed 1. Since then the car only has a few hundred miles put on it and it runs great.
This car runs and drives great and the only 2 things that need attention would be the power antenna doesn't go up or down automatically, but still worksmanually. It was a good quality antenna and may be an easy fix I just haven't looked at it as I mostly played CD's. Also the MSD rich-lean meter doesn't work. (mounted in engine bay). The O2 sensor went bad and I just pulled it and plugged the bung in the exhaust header. I was never happy with the meter and if I was keeping the car I would replace it with a new Air Fuel gauge.
This car when produced was like the Cadillacof after market cars produced. The quality of the body and the finish work was unheard of in the 80's. Mr Mader told me when I talked to him in around 2000 that the assembled cars that he sold went for in the mid 20,000 dollar range in the mid 80's. Due to the price very few where sold making them very rare.
When my son and I built this car we tried to do everything top of the line. No used parts were used unless they were fully rebuilt and when possible bought new. I also have most if not all the receipts for this car dating back to 1986. This includes the original bill of sale and certificate of origin for the car when bought from Mr Mader and Customs Classic.
It also comes with copies of all the sales literature that was made available in the 80's as well as some original articles that were done on the car. Also since these cars where sold mostly as completed cars and not kits, there were not any instruction manual made available except for a hand written one. I have an original copy of this that will go with the car. I'm pretty sure that I have the most complete records of any of these cars available out there.
