Car description |

Triangularly lost somewhere in the South Atlantic but now found for your consideration is this limited-production ‘squire’ wagon, approx 1 of 1500 manufactured by the long-defunct Edsel Division of Ford Motor Company. I call it my trusty orphan-wagon and am really going to miss it.. Snow White body with Royal Blue Metallic top and side-spears and its tri-tone Blue Vinyl interior are original colors per Data-Plate, all of which still exist, albeit in deteriorated state. Functional Power Front Seat was swapped in years ago from an Edsel Villager Wagon with Red/White interior.
Restoring this thing to an Edsel-correct Trophy winner would be a real challenge but probably doable with a big bankroll. Cheaper to entertain a resto-mod route, liberating oneself from Edsel-correct purity of form. More tin-worm damage than some, but less than many 60 year-old unrestored 57-58 Ford products since the era's sheet-metal alloys were so rust-prone.
Good running (see Videos below), registered, and insured Driver-quality car that would need lots of work to be a show car since, although driven regularly, obviously was never cosmetically coddled much. I have kept it running (and stopping) well so I could use it as a carry-all utility vehicle through the years. Moderate rust-outs exist in portions of her sheet-metal but the Frame and main structural areas/anchors are SOLID - certainly solid enough to be a strong & trustworthy driver for me over the decades. Luckily there’s an adequate supply of pre-stamped metal sections available for this thanks to its floor-pan and body-skinning being 57-58 Ford wagon identical from the cowl rearward. (A quality-stamped Driver-side Rocker Panel is already included in the sale.)All Edsel-specific trim components are securely mounted and in decent shape. Exceptions: Correct Edsel Wheels & Wheelcovers; Door-opening Step Plates, 2 of which are included with the sale; Headliner and its Support Rods will be shipped separate inside car.
Engine was rebuilt approx 30k miles ago and still runs very strong, very quiet, and smoke-free. Engine is this Edsel's original 361 ‘E-400’ FoMoCo FE series engine (FEs being newly introduced for 1958) with the early-58 only machined (not as-cast) Cylinder Heads, and Hydraulic Lifter valve-train, which is wonderfully quiet on this car. VERY-minimal RMS leakage, not even mentionable really. 4-bbl FoMoCo/Autolite carburetor functions perfectly.
Original 3-spd Fordomatic Transmission shifts just fine but does seep fluid slightly (as it's done since the 80s). Original Edsel electric push-button ‘Teletouch Drive’ system performs just fine, even operating the Backup Lites as it should. (Those and the Neutral-Start functions being switched within the Teletouch Drive system.)
Brakes function properly and all 4 have plenty of Shoe-Lining with no leakage at MC or WCs (Just checked all of that out) or anywhere else in the Brake system.System was converted to Silicone DOT-5 Brake Fluid decades ago soon after I acquired her. Although this example was originally manufactured with the troublesome Bendix ‘Treadle-Vac’ Power Brakes, it now sports the much less maintenance-intensive FoMoCo Manual Brake Master and Pedal assy correct for the car, and I’ve honestly never felt wanting for Power Brakes with this car, even with the full load of dirt I once transported to the local Dump.Had I mentioned that this Edsel wagon performs valiantly as a utility-use vehicle??
And oh yeah, wheels are 1970s-era Superior aluminum slotted Mags with very-OLD Radial TA 225/70-15 tires, which I wouldn’t trust for trips of much distance. Included with the sale are four older 15” www BIAS-ply tires, in case these Radial TAs finally fail and The Buyer wants them..
I’ve included some photos that reveal the gist of this crusty-rusty-but-trusty Bermuda but have more. If there are any others you need I will try to provide them, as well as answer all reasonable questions…
