1984 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z Coupe
The Dodge Daytona, taking a hallowed muscle car name from the past, debuted for 1984 along with its identical Chrysler Laser twin. These cars were based on a modified K platform, but the wheelbase had been shortened from 100.1" to 97" creating the "G" body. Chrysler fancied the Daytona and Laser twins to be alternatives to such heavyweights as the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird and the Ford Mustang, even the Porsche 944 in some of its advertising.
For consignment a rust free 80K mile survivor in the form of a Daytona Turbo Z 1984 (premier year) from Dodge. This one is two tone, has nifty MoPar headlight covers, and a rear spoiler. A nice interior and an all-original car (except for paint), a first place winner on several occasions at several shows, all here and ready for the plucking.
Exterior
Some of the square and rectangle design mantra of the mid 1980's is beginning to melt away on this car. MoPar headlight covers in black rest on the border of the Garnet Red upper, and Radiant Silver Crystal Coat below which wraps around the entire car. Some ground effects cowling is added to the rockers, black trimmings surrounding the windows. a small spoiler on back behind a greenhouse glass fastback, and a snappy badged rear bumper. 15-inch wheels nicely surrounded by holes drilled strategically in line are wrapped in Nexen rubber all around.
Interior
Racy red is noted throughout this interior, and for the doors it starts out with a bang in checked broadcloth inserts surrounded by deep red velour and carpeting below. Slipping inside, more checked broadcloth tuck and roll inserts surrounded by more red velour bolsters are covering buckets upfront and a 2 plus 2 rear bench. Inside here, the square and rectangle design abounds with a square center console, black insert to the dash front and red molded vinyl surrounds which is crack free and not faded. The original stitched covered steering wheel is fronting this dash, and in the center, we note the AM/FM/Cassette, temp sliders and a digital clock. Deep red carpeting floods the floors and is slightly faded at the door thresholds. A red felted headliner is above and is fairly tight complete with working light.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is the heart of the matter in a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged mill. It sports EFI and a 5-speed manual transmission for those downshifts when you go into turn one. A 3.57 final drive put power to the ground.
Undercarriage
Metal with some patina and slight surface rust, but all structurally sound. It has all aged nicely and was garage kept but driven in all weather conditions. The front suspension is made up of independent suspension and McPherson Struts and for the back, coil springs. Power disc brakes are upfront and power drums for the rear. A stock exhaust is on and shows heavy surface rust. Plenty of ground effects built in under here with smooth solid seams and straight metal.
Drive-Ability
This car started quickly and off to the test track where it performed as it should, quick acceleration and slight turbo lag. Good handling and bias free panic stopping. The radio proved inoperable and the power passenger window only lowered about 2 inches. All else was just fine.
Unlike the Camaro or Mustang, this Daytona offered up a sporty 2 plus 2 sports car with snappy acceleration with the turbo, AND good gas mileage, which the others could not match. It had its niche, and endured a 9 year run, this car being the first year of the offering which was based on the venerable K car chassis.
