Car description

I am happy to email additional photos upon your request of this extremely rare, all original, perfectly sorted, 4-digit serial number, bone dry, first-year 240Z with incredible patina.

HISTORY: Purchased new in Okinawa Japan by a U.S. Serviceman, Craig W., who had approval papers to purchase a foreign automobile, and in the window of the Datsun dealership near his Navy base was this very car, in Monte Carlo Red, and he purchased it for $2920. Note the lack of any U.S. Dealership added on options. The car was shipped for $80 back to his home in Sacramento and he daily drove it and sold it to his best friend Mike S. in 1985 with 124k miles. Craig noted that at the time of sale, the car had zero dents or faded spots in the paint. Mike drove the car daily around his home of Burbank, CA until 1993 when he sold it a college student, Anna in Santa Barbara, with 171k miles. Anna drove the car for only 3 more years and with 188k miles, it was parked in her backyard in 1996 to be discovered by me in 2017. I have every work order and receipt for the car from 1970 to present-day organized in a binder with protective sleeves. There is also a bound log book of gas fill-ups and all work performed on this car.

IN MY OWNERSHIP: The original (numbers-matching) engine was completely rebuilt with 10-over main and rod bearings, rings, fresh head-work, new chain, water pump, thermostat, clutch, alternator, radiator, and all new ignition parts. The carbs were rebuilt and all new Datsun braided hoses were installed. New master cylinder, new front calipers, new rotors, new struts, and full front suspension was removed, cleaned and reinstalled with new bushings and bearings. The rear suspension received new shocks, new wheel cylinders, new shoes and new soft lines. An all new exhaust system was fabricated from the manifold to the tip. The transmission shifts smoothly with no synchro noises up or down.

The paint is all original inside and out, and while all of the gaps are excellent on the doors, hood and hatch, each body panel has its share of dings and dents. The original paint is burned-through revealing the primer and bare metal beneath. The body has been moisturized, and buffed, glazed and waxed and does NOT have any clear coat applied to it.

There is a small rust perforation in the outer skin of the right fender above the rear wheel arch, and holes below the rear hatch glass at each of the two lower corners. No other rust was found anywhere in the body, the structure, the doors or the hatch.

The interior is original including the seats, 3-point seat belts, door panels, center tunnel, cracked dash, glove box and all knobs and controls. The carpets were custom made from German wool square weave, including the floors, under seats and rear compartment. Under the lift-out carpets is a lift out wool pad for sound deadening, with nothing glued in place to trap moisture.

The Z fires right up when cold with the hand-choke and settles into a smooth idle when warm. Acceleration, steering, braking and shifting are crisp and there is a firm mechanical handshake between the driver and all hand and feet controls. All lighting, horns, turn signals and windshield wipers work. Powdercoated steel wheels, brand new Vredestein Sprint Special tires and very nice original D hubcaps are installed. Also included are the original jack, tool pouch, driver manuals, original keys, all full paperwork history from 1970 and some wonderful period dealer brochures which Craig collected.

The blue California license plates were issued to this car in 1970 and are currently registered.
