Up for sale is my 1949 Chrysler NewYorker 2dr coupe. I bought this 1949 Chrysler in Sacramento. California. Before coming here to North Carolina this car has spent her entire life out west. Still has the original 1963 issued CA black plates. Car had been registered each year in CA up until I bought her. I was told the car belonged to a local fire chief and this was his personal car. Kept inside for the majority of her life and being in the dry climate of California kept the car in very nice condition. This Chrysler has the 323. 5 cubic inch flathead 8 under the hood. Coupled to the engine is Chrysler's Fluid Drive transmission. This particular transmission has a low and high range. In each range is two gears. One can start in either range and the car will automatically shift by letting off the accelerator. The transmission will downshift automatically when coming to a stop. You do not need to depress the clutch when stopping. You only use the clutch to shift between ranges and reverse. The car can be driven like an automatic by simply leaving the car in high range. Transmission works very well. The engine runs strong and doesn't smoke. Fresh oil change with new filter. A new rebuilt water pump was recently installed. The electric choke is disconnected. In the summer she starts up right away. When its cold out she'll need some time to warm up. Probably would benefit by adding a manual choke if one desired. Its not hard to start so I haven't bothered. Old coolant drained and flushed out and replaced with new coolant. The gas tank is in perfect shape. No rust. no holes. no leaks. The inside of the tank looks brand new as well. The brakes have been fully rebuilt. New master cylinder. New wheel cylinders. New shoes. and New hoses. Wheel seals were also replaced both front and back. Bearings serviced and repacked. This Chrysler has the bigger 12 inch brakes and the car stops exceptionally well. This car was equipped with power brakes but the booster has been bypassed. The original master cylinder is included. The body of the car is in very good shape. The only rust on the car is a small spot in the trunk floor and a small area on the back panel. (See Photos) There is some bubbling on the passenger door bottom. Factory undercoating is on the floors and where some has come loose you can see the floors still have the factory gray paint on the bottom side. The maroon paint is very old and faded on the top of the hood and trunk. I have not tried buffing the paint. There are scratches and chips in various spots of the car. The chrome and stainless are in very good shape. Very minor imperfections if any. The passenger fender NewYorker emblem is broken. When I purchased the car there were mirror bases attached to both doors. The mirrors had been broken off so I removed them. There are of course small screw holes where the mirrors used to mount. The peep mirror was already on the car so I left it on. I will include the mirror bases with the car. I am not sure if they were original units. The massive bumpers only have minor scrapes. There is a lot of chrome on this car. and she looks great out in the sunlight! I installed NOS factory MoPar door handle guards on the doors. The seats and armrests were reupholstered at some point and show age. There are two small tears on the driver's seat and the back top of the rear seat has come apart. The door panels are original. They show typical wear. I had the dash pad recovered as the original was very dry and brittle and coming apart. Headliner is original and still presentable. The sunvisors were recovered but appears someone had glued something to the backsides and removed them so there are glue spots. Car has vintage seatbelts installed for the front seat. They were probably installed in the 1950s. The gauges have all been removed and restored. All gauges work as they should and read accurate. A new speedometer cable was installed. I had the AM radio professionally restored and rebuilt. The speaker is original and probably should be replaced as its a bit crackly. I had an AUX jack added to the radio so you can play your iPod/MP3 player. phone. etc. through the original radio. NOS clock installed and works great. The car is equipped with a spotlight. I replaced the bulb and it works as it should. Headlights are the original Autolite "Bulls Eye" lamps and both are still in working order. Turn signals work. Brake lights work. On these cars the brake lights are only on the trunk in the center. The outside lights are turn signal and running lights. NOS tail and brake light lenses have been installed. (4 lenses in total) The lenses are of course very nice! They are pretty hard to come by. This Chrysler is equipped with 2 speed electric wipers. No vacuum wipers to fail on you when going up a steep grade! This car also has an optional antiglare day/night rearview mirror. There is also a factory windshield washer on this car. The components inside the jar need serviced. Probably the rubber seals. The door locks and trunk lock work nicely. Tires are new Coker Classic wide whitewalls with only a few hundred miles. The original full wheelcovers are in nice shape. This car glides down the road like a luxury car should! We are talking about a Chrysler here. a mark of excellence! The suspension is smooth and has enough cushion for bumps in the road. The car actually corners pretty well for something from the 1940s!Shes a very solid California car. Runs and drives good. She's pretty much all original. Mainly in need of cosmetic work if one was wanting to go that route. Or she could just be a nice driver and not have to worry about where you park! She gets alot of looks and compliments when I'm out and about in this automobile. The furthest I've driven the car is probably 2 hours straight. The one thing the car might need is probably a new parking brake band. You can hear it scuffing slightly when driving slowly.
