1953 DESOTO LIMOUSINE
I bought this 2 years ago out of an estate with a collection of several hundred automobiles in Oregon. (Picture shows when it was in their museum). They purchased this from a collector car auction 20 years ago and it was represented to them as President Harry Truman's car. IF it was built in the spring or summer of 1952, it possibly could have been used until late January 1953 when his term as President ended. This is not priced as a President's car.
The Desoto starts and runs well with a sound motor. Brakes and transmission work fine. The heater box is missing off the firewall. The frame and underside is sound with several small patch panels on the driver's floor.
The interior seats, carpets, and headliner are in good condition. The glass in general is good. It has been repainted certainly over 20 years ago. It doesn't appear to have ever been damaged. The paint shows high gloss but has had some touch up. The sides are very straight. Door, hood and trunk shut and fit well. The exterior chrome, including the emblems, grill, tail lights and bumpers, have been finished in new chrome in the last 3 months.
This is better than driver quality but certainly not a show car. Can be used to drive or as a nice addition to a collection. Only 200 of these Desoto Limousines were made in this model year. Believed to be 57,000 actual miles.
PS: Just because it's not on the internet doesn't mean that this isn't his car. Ironically, I went through the same experience with a much more valuable President's car a number of years ago and after trying to prove the car for 3 years, someone gave me a simple solution. It worked. I have not attempted to find out about this car. I never found the time or cared. Don't ask me how unless you are a buyer. May or may not be Truman's car. The car does have a cool siren that you can hear for miles.
