"Elvira, elvira/My heart's on fire elvira/Giddy up oom poppa omm poppa mow mow/Giddy up oom poppa omm poppa mow mow/Heigh-ho silver, away."
After taking a look at this rarely seen 1963 Chrysler New Yorker 4 door hardtop Restomod Station Wagon, nicknamed "Elvira," you, too, may be tempted to sing the above chorus to the Oak Ridge Boys' classic country song.
This New Yorker Station Wagon was quite rare, with just 2,194 built for 1963. This six-passenger example was located as an original, low-mileage car in the Midwest through the Speed Channel TV program Car Search, then it was modified to its present awesome condition. The previous California owner has possessed this black beast since 2009 at which true mileage was 89,897, only 4,689 miles traveled in 8 years!
Its Formal Black paint and trim are in very good overall condition, only evidencing minor trim blemishes upon close inspection. The window glass looks great, no pits or chips, plus the rear window and most of the side glass is tinted black, matching the paint. The wagon's lights are also in very good order, the Virgil Exner styling cues still look great almost 55 years later. Elvira rides on a one-off set of Boyd's custom wheels, wrapped within 235/45ZR17 tires in front and 255/45ZR18 tires in back.
All of Elvira's body panels are straight and solid, her engine bay is very tidy and her bumpers are look very good. Atop the wide black hood is a scoop to funnel air to what's beneath the hood, a 426 CID Max Wedge V-8 engine, which must run on 93+ octane fuel, breathing through dual exhausts. The engine is supported by a larger radiator and a rebuilt Torqueflite three-speed automatic transmission, which retains the pushbutton shifter. Welcome upgrades include a reworked front end and disc brakes. It comes complete with aftermarket air conditioning, keeping you cool in this "Hot Rod".
Inside, Elvira's black interior is in very good overall condition. Her matching carpet is in good shape and the contrasting lighter-colored headliner is in very good shape. The sweeping black instrument panel is original and sports a SW tachometer directly before the driver and aftermarket voltage, engine temperature and oil pressure gauges located at the driver's right knee. Besides the pushbutton controls for the transmission, another unique interior design element is the futuristic, squared-off, two-spoke steering wheel, which is very eye-catching. The inner door panels are in good overall shape, as is the mirror glass. Completing the interior is a factory AM/FM radio.
In 2009, this muscular wagon completed a cross country car rally from Chicago to Santa Monica, California on Route 66. At the end of the event, it was voted the People's Choice Award and gained the nickname Elvira. Please visit us to take a look at Elvira and she could soon be your "mistress of the dark."
The upscale New Yorker model line played a key role in Chrysler's success, comprising 27,960 units out of total production of 118,800 vehicles for 1963, a model year during which the luxury marque occupied a respectable 11th place ranking in the American new-car market. Chrysler got a boost in sales with the introduction of a five-year/50,000-mile warranty, a business practice that was unheard of by its competitors in the 1960s. The New Yorker used Chrysler's completely redesigned body with only the windshield showing traces of the previous Forward Look designs, although, under the skin, platform changes were near zero, with only a change from 12? Total Contact to Bendix 11? Duo-Servo brakes.
Competition to this New Yorker station wagon in 1963 included Buick's LeSabre Estate Wagon, Mercury's Colony Park Station Wagon and Oldsmobile's Super 88 Fiesta Station Wagon.
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 94,952 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, actual mileage California title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
