4) RESTORATION DETAILS:

Sources: Restoration parts were primarily purchased new from the very reputableFilling Stationin Oregon. Independent sellers of a few very difficult to find NOS were also used. Most parts for the entire car are very accessible at reasonable prices.

Engine/Exhaust/Fuel: (Jacobs Engineering) Gary Jacobs and crew have been building reputable engines for years and this one represents that. Original stock 216 cid received a complete rebuild with .060 over new aluminum pistons for less weight and quieter operation. Babbitt material was seen to be in excellent condition. Stock oil filter assembly ( I believe that was an option). Aeroquip oil lines from filter to block. Dual headers by Fenton with dual exhaust systemfor improved breathing and great exhaust tone. Motor at 120-125lbs compression. Rebuilt originalCarter W-1carburetor bySan Diego Carburetor with original air cleaner assembly. All new motor/trans mounts of course. New all 3 core all aluminum radiator (Superior Radiator) and overflow tank. Cleaned 18 gal gas tank with dual in-line filters and accurate gas level sender. New oil and gas pumps.

No oil or water leaks whatsoever. Excellent oil pressure at 10 lbs idle 15 lbs fast idle and higher when driving. Water temperature (180-195) very accurate gas gauge and ammeter. New drivetrain has 100 miles on it.

Transmission: (Oceanside Transmission) Inspection reveals original gears were in great condition. Bearings and seals replaced. The vacuum assist shifting unit works excellent. Grinds like these transmissions do when they are cold and then diminishes as the car warms to operating temp.

Differential: (Patrick's &ProGear)Final drive gears changed from stock 4.11:1 to3.73'sfor higher speed driving. Stock torque tube still intact and serviced with new U-joints.

Brakes: A heftydual portmaster cylinder was built with one-way pressure relief valves to create stronger independent front and rear braking. Works very well. New shoes resurfaced drums new wheel cylinders new brake lines byCrown Performance. New emergency brake cable.

Electrical: Maintaining the 6 volt system for originality 90% of the car was rewired (with spares added) . (Note: converting to 12 volts is a relatively easy and low cost step). Wires wrapped in vintage cloth style electrical tape. New fused master headlight switch. All lights including interior dome and dash lights rebuilt original horns radio wipers and gauges are operational. This car has a custom 5000 rpm electric tachometer. All bulbs replaced. New 650 cca Super Start battery. Inspected and rebuilt generator and starter done byAutomotive Electrical Services which both operate well. New Pertronix coil. Turn signal and 4-way flasher functions added. Its' original AM radio was rebuilt (La Jolla Audio) and works. Station “memory” buttons still show original 3-letter Los Angeles stations that it was set to. Original non-operational clock.

Suspension: Rebuilt knee action shocks. New front springs. New front stabilizer bar bushings and linkage. New wheel bearings. All lubed front to rear.

Interior:(Kiwi Kustoms) Impressive show condition work by Kiwi who also did the interior of the Lincoln Zephyr for the lead singer of Metallica.Complete interior restoration where choice of fabric is a very high quality tweed. Stock seat is super supportive and firm. Beautiful headliner. All those bakelite knobs are original. Original rear wood deck piece was restored. Sound deadening Dynamat installed under carpet. While not stock we chose carpet for a quieter ride and plusher interior. Re-wood-grained dashboard and all window garnishes.. Original factory I.D floor tag plate is purposely exposed.

Glass: (AG Glass)All removed to fit new rubber seals. Vent windows work fine and lock in place.

Exterior: Body panel gaps and alignment (doors hood trunk fenders) are impressively parallel and correct and have been even before restoration. Only the new mouldings while breaking in push the doors and trunk lid out a bit but over time they will compress. All window trunk door and running board mouldings replaced (Steele Rubber Products). Triple chrome plating for original bumpers bumperettes grill trim and miscellaneous pieces done byPacific Plating.Various components such as bumper brackets radiator support radiator-to-firewall brace were powder coated (Powder One).

Undercarriage: Pressure cleaned detailed and coated with Eastman Chassis Black. No hidden rust.

Paint: As best as can be determined thisistheoriginal 1940 Mayland Black factory paint. We preferred preserving the history. The mid-ground could be that the new owner paints the 2 front fenders where the majority of the wear is. There are some rough and peeled spots from 75 years of existence on the hood the front driver fender and sections of the lower roof. But overall for it's age the paint is in very good condition and responded well to detailing. There is a very shallow mild 3" ding in the front driver side fender. Using products fromAutogeek.netthe car was clayed compounded glazed and waxed.

Wheels/Tires:Original 6 x 16" steel wheels color match the original red stripes on sides of car and the hood. New popular General Jet600-16 whitewall tires(Lucas Tire) have less than 100 miles on them and feel great. The car does not "wander" and corners well. New beauty rings and hubcaps. Spare wheel/tire and original jack in the trunk.
