1970 Chevelle 454 Convertible – Black on black with white SS stripes - 4 speed

1970 CHEVELLE CONVERTIBLE SS – 454 – 4 speed with true LS6 (512 cast number – 4 bolt – 435 factory horsepower) engine.Description:Where horsepower history and beauty converge. Here you have it – the crown jewel of the Muscle Car era and in a convertible to add to the rarity of yourinvestment. A 1970 Chevelle SS Convertible 454 4-SPEED with original LS6 engine!Story:I purchased this car 10 years ago after the car had had a ground-up restoration by a car builder in Colorado. Although this car is not a numbers matching car and has no build sheet to prove its 'birth' the car was purchased as a rolling chassis (from a private owner in Pennsylvania in 1985 – 15 years after the car was produced). When purchased the car had the original black paint (with white SS stripes) round dash gages front disc breaks and a rear SS pad – all indications that this was ONE OF THE SELCET FEW of the 'SS' 1970 Chevelle convertibles produced (There were only 7522 1970 Chevelle Convertibles produced).Because this was an original convertible with the SS package the production numbers of this type of car are drastically reduced. Unfortunatly there is no way to prove what type of engine the car had in it originally (L34 396 w/350 horsepower L78 396 w/375 horsepower L89 396 w/375 horsepower LS5 454 with 360 horsepower and aluminum heads or the LS6 454 with 450 horsepower and aluminum heads). Fortunately the builder was able to locate a true LS6 4 bolt big block with the 512 cast number (produced in 69-71 by GM). Authentication of the cast number can assured by an independent third party prior to purchase (as restamping can be now be detected.)I realize the next question is but if you do not have the documentation then it doesn't matter. Just because the car doesn't have a build sheet does not mean it wasn't born. The reality is that there are currently ONLY 28 documented LS6 1970 Chevelle convertibles known to exist today. These cars are over $150000 and in my opinion should be put in a museum and not be driven. Because there were over 480000 Chevelle's built and of these only 7522 convertibles and of these only a select few with the SS packages the evidence points to this car ORIGINALLY being one of the more rare of the bunch.In conclusion without factory paperwork (or Canadian documentation as many of these cars were produced in Canada and build information can be referenced using the original VIN) it is difficult to validate a true '70 Chevelle Super Sport. However on the flip side it is just as hard to disprove it especially considering all the evidence.The bottom line is this: This is the highest quality Chevelle you could order in 1970 – The LS6 454 Convertible. The colors are Black on black with a black top — This WAS the cream of the crop in 1970 and is not only a great investment but also the pinnacle of the muscle car.
