Introduced for 1968, the new third-generation Corvette was inspired by the Larry Shinoda-designed Mako Shark II concept car debuted at Paris in 1965. Beneath its sleek new bodywork, the C3 Corvette retained the excellent C2 chassis design and its many available powertrains. Race-bred performance and handling remained outstanding, thanks to Zora Arkus-Duntov and his Corvette Engineering team. Once available in Chevy showrooms, the new Corvette sold better than ever before with production of 28,566 units for 1968. The basic design continued with refinements through 1982 and adapted very well to the changing buyer demands and tightening regulatory environment of the late 1960s and the 1970s.
Above all, the C3 Corvette continued its reign as Americas quickest and fastest series-production sports-car for most of its run. For 1968, the most popular "big-block" Corvette engine was the RPO L34 427 developing 390 rated horsepower and 460 pounds-feet of tire-melting torque. Despite such massive output, the L34 Corvette was easy to maintain with its big single Rochester Quadra-Jet carburetor and hydraulic valvetrain. Priced just $221 over the Corvette's base price, the L34 was a fantastic high-performance bargain. Today, original L34 427/390 Corvettes continue to offer outstanding performance with real-world drivability.
Finished in Corvette Bronze, this RPO L34 427/390 1968 Corvette is a rare unrestored and unspoiled survivor with just two owners and 50,000 miles from new, featuring a driver-preferred Muncie 4-speed manual transmission. According to known history, it was sold new from Mander Chevrolet in North Vancouver, British Columbia and eventually placed into long-term storage in 1979, remaining under cover until 2017. The rare (1 of 3,374) Corvette Bronze paint finish and Tobacco Brown vinyl interior are unrestored and remain attractive. Maintenance work performed since the car was removed from storage includes a fresh overhauled rear suspension, installation of a new exhaust system, and a recent 4-wheel alignment.
