1951 Chevrolet Fleetline Deluxe Sedan
The 1951 Chevrolet Styleline and Fleetline looked softer and rounder, though little changed in overall contour. The softer and rounder look was credited to a smooth new "Fashion-Front" grille and integrated "Reflector-Guard" taillights. Parking lights moved to the outer edges of the grille molding to yield a wider, more substantial appearance.
For consignment we present this very nice example of the 1951 Chevrolet Fleetline deluxe 4 door. Dinah Shore was singing the praises on her TV show of "See the USA in your Chevrolet" and this 4-door version was rolling along Americas 2 lane highways. A very clean rust-free example showing what 1951 could do with automobile construction.
Exterior
Very nicely preserved Fathom Green paint covers the straight rust-free exterior panels which present in the fully curved design. A bulbous hood topped with a Rocket-Jet hood adornment is framed below with a 3-tiered chromed grille. The first tier sports the Chevrolet badging in script form, slightly worn, the second is the turn signal and parking light bar, and the third the bumper. All these are nicely polished and show little fading, dimpling or faults. On the sides are trim spears in stainless that jet their way rearward to the bumped out rear fender and quarter panel. A shiny stainless rocker trim and a large curved fender protector and trim are seen as we move to the back. Up above A, B and C pillars have some surrounding chrome trim and a band runs around the entire roofline completely encircling the roof at the bottom. Integrated reflector guard taillights frame the sides of a bulbous trunk sporting plenty of room. A nice rear bumper brings up the bottom of the rear of this automobile. Embossed bowtie dog dish wheel covers are in the center of body matching green steel wheels wrapped by wide white bias ply all around. In the trunk is an additional set go blue bowtie painted covers and a spare in excellent condition. A few faults to note, those being some scratches on the hood (similar to a "keying"), and on the driver's rear quarter, a too close encounter with the side of the garage.
Interior
Original broadcloth stitched felt in cream color bordered by chrome trim and gray vinyl bottoms make up the door panels. Pinstriped gray lines on an off-white field are the seat and half the back for the dual benches. An upper area of gray broadcloth covers the tops of the seats which are bordered with gray piping. Faded gray but still nicely preserved floods the floors below these benches. Upfront is the original dash, which is in light and dark gray, has dual circular instruments in front of the column, a vertical chromed ribbed center, and plenty of creme bakelite knobs and levers. Some spotting consistent with early signs of possible mold on the paint of this dash. The headliner is near perfect nice and tight above.
Drivetrain
A very clean engine bay greets the viewer upon opening the massive hood. Here the standard Chevy Inline 6 cylinder 216 ci engine with a 1-barrel carburetor resides along with a 3-speed manual transmission to back it up. 4.11 is the ratio for the rear axle. Overall showing nicely under the hood with mostly black painted surfaces and some nice aged patina.
Undercarriage
Presenting unbelievably clean... almost showroom, with no road dirt on the floorpans, and just slight surface rust on the rockers and some free parts. The floorpans appear nearly as new and may very well be, but either way just wonderfully shown. Independent coil sprung front suspension is on and leaf springs for the rear. Noted are the "Jumbo Drum"brakes all around which as advertised are supposedly needing 25% less pedal push to obtain the same stopping power as a previous design.
Drive-Ability
This car cranks but will not start.
A beautiful example exterior, interior, and undercarriage, it will require some wrenching on the engine to get her going, and it may be as simple as a fresh tank of gas and a carb cleaning. A solid car, with some nifty features, plenty of chrome, and straight steel rust free panels. Beautiful fathom green paint finishes this example off.
