The Chevrolet El Camino was reintroduced for the 1964 model year after a four year hiatus from the Chevrolet line up. Based on the Chevelle two door station wagon floorpan, the El Camino offered the comfort of a car, with the utility of a truck. You could use it to go to church on a Sunday morning in your finest dress, and then haul produce to the local market from the farm on Monday. This made the El Camino a very popular car amongst the car buying public of the day, and you cannot attend a car show today without seeing at least one El Camino. The 1969 model you see here, is the high performance SS396 variant. Using the Chevelle SS drivetrain, Chevrolet stuffed the El Camino with a 396 cubic inch V-8 with varying levels of performance, from 325hp all the way to 375hp. This particular SS 396 carries the 350 horsepower L34 396 V-8. It starts easily, idles smooth, and produces loads of rubber burning torque. Power flows rearward to a smooth shifting four speed manual transmission, and then on to a 12-bolt rear axle with Positraction. True dual exhaust provides a nice rumble, but not so loud as to draw any unwanted attention. Brakes are power front disc with big cast iron rear drums, and steering is easy with power assist. Suspension consists of short and long arm with coil springs up front, and solid axle with coil springs out back. On the outside, this El Camino looks the part of performance machine. It's bright white paint and black stripes turns heads. The double domed hood provides a hint of the power underneath, and the SS 396 badges confirm those suspicions. The wheels are classic five spoke Magnum 500 style with trim rings, and are wrapped in classic white letter tires. The chrome trim and bumpers are in excellent condition, as is the inside of the bed. The interior color of this El Camino is unique, as you don't see many with the saddle tan vinyl color interior. The overall condition is great, with a big comfortable bench seat, seat belts for safety, an AM radio, deep twist carpeting, and that other super rare option, factory A/C! This makes this particular El Camino a real four seasons driver even in the hottest days of summer in the south. Auxiliary gauges located under the dash help you to keep an eye on all the important engine operating parameters. The wood wheel feels nice in your hands, and there is additional cargo space behind the seats. If you're in the market for a beautiful, real deal, El Camino SS, you cannot go wrong with this one!
