The 1986 Indianapolis 500 took place on Saturday, May 31st, and at the head of the field pacing the race was the Chevrolet Corvette with Capt. Chuck Yeager at the wheel! This was the second time that a Corvette paced the great American race, the first being in 1978, and in celebration of this fact Chevrolet division announced that all 1986 Corvette convertibles would be pace car replicas and came to the dealer with the pace car decals ready to install at the new owners request. This meant that while the actual pace car was a beautiful bright yellow color, you could have your pace car replica in whatever color you liked! This particular example was spec'd out in the classic combination of bright white with a red leather interior, just like the first 300 Corvettes in 1953, and yes the decals are still with the car should you choose to install them! This sleek looking roadster is a great example of the early C4 generation. The convertible option had been missing from the Corvette options list since 1975, and the new 1986 roadster brought back the clean look of those earlier roadsters but with modern styling. An opening deck lid covered the top when it was down, giving the appearance of no roof at all. This Corvette is unique in that it does not have the rear luggage rack that adorned most all the convertibles built at this time, and I must say I think it benefits the clean look of the car. The stylish 16 aluminum wheels measured 9.5 inches wide all the way around on the convertibles, and gave the new Corvette that proper technical 80's look to match all the techno wizardry that awaited in the interior of the car. The vinyl convertible top is a brilliant white, with a vinyl back window, just as it came in 1986. The roof is manually operated, but raises and lowers very easily. The top appears newer, and has no rips, tears, or stains. Open the door and you are greeted by beautiful leather covered bucket seats with drivers side power adjustments. Slip down into them and you find yourself surrounded with digital screens and buttons galore. The digital instruments are very unique to look at, and a driver information center shows any information you could think to ask for. Power windows, mirrors, and locks are all accounted for, along with cruise control, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, variable wipers, air conditioning, and an AM/FM/Cassette Bose four speaker sound system to play your favorite 80's tunes! Under the hood is Chevrolet's tried and true 350 cubic inch small block V-8, this unit featuring Tuned Port Fuel Injection to produce 235 horsepower. A smooth shifting four speed 700R4 automatic transmission sends the power back to a Dana 36 limited slip rear axle with 2.73:1 ratio for low rpm highway cruising. Suspension is independent at all four corners with fiberglass transverse leaf springs front and rear. Brakes are four wheel ventilated discs with ABS, a completely new system for 1986. This low mileage example has been well care for and garage kept. If you're in the market for a C4 Corvette roadster, stop looking and get down here!
