1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
In lieu of the fact of being in production for just 13 years less time than the Cadillac CTS nameplate the Chevrolet Chevelle has been heralded as one of the best, most accomplished vehicles ever to don the bowtie. It shared a platform with the El Camino and Monte Carlo...though it was available in convertible, two-door, four-door, and station wagon-wagon body styles, the multi-variant Chevelle also shares it's A-body platform with the El Camino, and the 1970-'72 Monte Carlo (though it was coded as a G-body in the latter). Despite wearing one of the most famous nameplates of all time, Chevrolet has yet to revive the name. Though we've heard rumblings and rumors over the years, Chevrolet has vehemently denied claims that a new Chevelle is in the works.
For consignment a 1970 example of a consigner stated numbers matching, 1 exterior respray, a rebuilt 396/402ci, with plenty of replaced with OEM parts car, and since 2006 garaged in a climate controlled environment. The interior is original, as is all the exterior steel slabbed car.
Exterior
Straight steel is covered in Green Mist paint which presents nicely overall. A few areas of underlying bubbling out rust are present, mostly near the low end of this car on the fenders and rocker areas. Large black contrasting racing stripes adorn the rear scooped hood, and rear trunk deck. These are not stickers but painted on stripes. There is a small area on the hood underneath the stripes that shows some bubbling rust underneath the stripe. A clean dark green vinyl top is on this flexing muscle. With a slight push on the back of the top, just below the rear glass in the corners, is a bit spongy, which may denote underlying rusting, which is a known problem with these vinyl topped cars. Chrome and trim is excellent, badging is correct, and glass is all clear. 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels are on all 4 corners and are wrapped with Goodrich T/A Radials.
Interior
A swing of the doors, and I get excited because it's going to be good, based on the door panels. These are excellent draped in dark green tuck and roll panels with chrome edging separating the tuck and roll from smooth beautiful vinyl panels. All great on the doors. Slipping inside, a nice dark green front bench seat pulls up the original dash. On this dash are the original gauges in a black faux leather textured panel for the dash front. Above is padded green vinyl, with no cracks or fading. Attached to the factory steering column and wheel, is an aftermarket AutoMeter tachometer. Also hanging below the dash is a duo of aftermarket gauges keeping track of water temp. and oil pressure. In back is a beautifully clean and near perfect rear bench. Flooding the floors is clean nice pile carpet, with nary a mark on it, and no fading. The headliner is tight as a drum and in presenting in black. Noted in the center of the hump is a Hurst shifter topped with a white knob.
Drivetrain
A flip of the hood, and que the oohs, and ahhhhhs soundtrack, as it is just beautiful. Mechanical jewelry for this rebuilt 396 L34 V8. Consigner stated it is the original engine, however we cannot confirm this from stampings and some missing ground off numbers, so we will go with the consigner! Either way it is absolutely fabulous with orange painted block, blasted headers, chromed valve covers, and polished intake manifold topped with a 4-barrel Holley carburetor. The air cleaner cover is chromed with the correct 396 Turbo Jet crossed flag sticker. All this shines and reflects into the side interior wheel well covers, it's that good! On back is a Muncie M20 4 speed manual transmission, and a 12 bolt 3.31 posi rear axle. Applause please, to the very nice presentation.
Undercarriage
Extremely clean, with not even a hint of road dirt, all straight and solid structural steel, floorpans and wheel wells. Even a shiny fuel tank and Flowmaster mufflers and pipes which snake their way through all the pristine black metal. Some of this metal is in the form of independent coil springs for the front, and 4 link with coil springs for the rear suspension. Power disc brakes are upfront, and power drums are on the rear.
Drive-Ability
A test track jaunt revealed as expected results. It fired right up, idled smoothly, and shifted like a dream. Power is there and if you really want to feel the range, just keep your foot into it and the range picks up quickly around 2700RPMs. It handles nicely, steers like a dream, and with power brakes comes to a straight quick stop. All was working on the controls front, and no noticeable nonfunctioning functions!
With documented invoices on the engine rebuild, and 1 respray with original interior, this is a great example of GM 1970 muscle. A fun and smooth driver, just a few faults in the paint, but overall, really well done and preserved. Turn the key on this beauty and begin the wrestling match but be careful you are up against some serious muscle, and not unlike a low-cut top or tight jeans, will be distracted by its eye candy appearance.
