1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe
"The Crown of Beauty Belongs to Chevrolet with New Royal Clipper Styling. Chevrolet's First again! Eye it . . . Try it . . . Buy it!" Almost makes me want to rush to the showroom and buy it, which indeed many actually did. Then along came hot rodding and one of their favorite cars to wrench on is the Special Deluxe.
With this consignment wrenching is an understatement. More like a total transformation and now we give you a fully custom rod version of the 1940 Chevy Special Deluxe. This rebuild taking place in 2015, it is as fresh as a daisy, and ready to rock and roll, with its many customizations that have been surgically performed on it. Read on!
Exterior
Sporting its original body metal and chrome trim, the exterior has been worked to near perfection, then bathed in Victory Red with 3 coats of clear topcoat. Upfront we can see a chromed "Groucho Marx" mustache style grille which is flanked by molded into the fender bullet style headlights with chrome bezels. These are halogen headlights, and the turn signals as well as the taillights are LED. The original trim for the hood joins up with a spear that runs the length of the car to the rear. Nice thin chrome trim surrounds the tinted glass all around, and all the bumpers and their mountings have been shaved. Weld Prostar chromed wheels are on all 4 corners and are wrapped with raised white letter tires.
Interior
Gray broadcloth velour with a small square pattern covers most of the custom door panels which now have toggles for the large windows and a crank for the wings. In the center is a deep red velour tuck and roll pattern that surrounds the door pull. On the bottom is a strip of gray. This continues for the front split power bench with fold down center armrest, and rear bench complete with armrests (can anyone say couch?!). This also continues on the headliner in solid gray velour with the small squares. Upfront looking to the dash for more inspiration is a tilt steering wheel, modified simplified dash with SunPro gauges and a few toggles. Also noted is a premium sound system with 6 speakers and a big woofer in a nicely carpeted trunk. Charcoal gray carpet in very clean condition covers all the floors.
Drivetrain
A 350ci V8 very clean and spit shined with smatterings of chromed covers and heat shields is shoehorned into a clean red engine bay. This 350 is courtesy of a 1974 Camaro and went through a total rebuild in 2017. Atop is an Edelbrock intake 4-barrel carburetor. A TH350 transmission which is a 3-speed automatic with a 2000rpm stall converter is attached. A 1969 Firebird 10 bolt 3.55 rear is on back.
Undercarriage
A nicely done frame and undercarriage which has been sandblasted then given a coat of black paint. No rust, a Stock Car Productions suspension, rack and pinion steering and all new brakes and lest I forget the Magnaflow exhaust which snakes its way rearward and ends well in chromed tips.
Drive-Ability
Upon the fire up we were met with a nice throaty sound. Popping it into gear is effortless and we were off to the test track. This car has good acceleration, a nice ride, good brakes, and superior handling. All functions were working well during our test drive.
Overall a very nice rodded bowtie Special Deluxe, now even more special and more deluxe than ever. Plenty of work to modernize the looks and the mechanical innards, and you can have a turnkey showstopper whether it be up main street or at an actual show.
