1980 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe
Pro Street is a style of street-legal custom car popular in the 1980s, usually built to imitate a Pro Stock class race car. Pro Street cars should appear to be more at home on the drag strip than the street, while remaining street legal and not gutted like a Race Car or Bracket Race car. Typically called a Backhalf car (tubbed). Cars of this type always feature two of the following three modifications: A highly modified, with supercharger or turbo, large capacity V8, V12, V10, V6, I6 engine, a narrowed rear axle coupled with oversized rear wheels & at least a 14" wide x 5+" sidewalls tire (located within the wheel wells) for maximum grip and wheelie bars and an NHRA legal roll cage. Cars of this type should remain unmodified from the firewall back, keeping Stock floorpans, a full interior with windshield wipers, carpet and working lights.
For consignment a wild ride 1980 Z28 Camaro in Pro Street Form. With its massive HP, and all mods, it still maintains the original looking exterior save for the Pro Stock style rear spoiler. Born as a non Z-28 with a mild mannered 6 cylinder with a blue interior, our consigner has taken it to the highest level and still be street legal. Also please note that all information with regards to drivetrain specs are "consigner stated" and while there is a spec sheet there have been no receipts or dyno sheets provided.
Exterior
A menacing Dark Blue Metallic paint with ghost stripes adorn the exterior of this Pro Streeter. Paint is nearly 12 years old, and still shines like a crazy diamond. Slight faults throughout but mostly older rust repairs are noted particularly on the doors. A 6-inch cowl induction hood allows massive airflow to reach the mill, and a non painted custom rear wing, shades of a Pro Stock drag car, is on the back. Wheels are Weld Pro Stars 15 x 3.5 upfront wrapped in Hankooks. Backs are 15 x 15 gray smoke powder coated Welds wrapped in Mickey Thompson 33 x 21.5 x 15 S/R Radials. More smoke please, or should I say "smoke 'em if you got it!"( and this car has it)
Interior
Fitted with an 8-point roll bar, this black vinyl covered interior is in fantastic condition, buckets in front and the 2+2 bench in the rear has long since been removed for the massive tubs. Nice black carpet mixes with vinyl covering and created a nice pool of black for the roll bar assembly to fit within. Phantom Autometer gauges abound within aluminum fields on the dash front, and the remainder of the dash is bathed in black. A Hurst quarter stick shifter is noted, and a Grant GT billet style rally steering wheel fronts this custom dash.
Drivetrain
A big 496ci crate engine fitted with Pro Comp aluminum heads, Elgin camshaft and lifters as well as Wisco pistons and a forged steel crank . A single 4-barrel carburetor feeds the mill and allows it to reach 576hp. A 3-speed TH400 manual valve body transmission with a 4000 Hughes stall converter passes power rearward to the Ford 9 inch rear with 5.13 gears. This feeds Moser axles and QA-1 adjustable shocks. Noted aluminum has been installed in the engine bay for weight reduction.
Undercarriage
All clean and rust free with no signs of any trouble or even potential warnings underneath. We do see Wilwood power disc brakes all around, and ladder bar rear suspension, and independent coil spring upfront. A massive 3-inch Flowmaster exhaust snakes its way rearward from the headers, then makes an abrupt turn to either side to exit just before the rear wheel wells.
Drive-Ability
It's loud, it's powerful, it's radical, it's dangerous in the wrong hands, and it's a screamer. It's a classic Camaro now spending its life going 1/4 mile at a time, and doing it very nicely, thank you very much.
An overall wonderful job to make it a Pro Street with some good looks and a nice interior. Let's go eat some lesser Muscle cars for dinner!
