1968 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Convertible
Until the 1950s, most American auto manufacturers made one size of car: large. Imports from Europe such as Volkswagen, Renault, and Fiat showed that there was a market in the U.S. for smaller cars, mostly as a second car or an alternative for the budget minded. Led by General Manager Edward N. Cole, Chevrolet designed a revolutionary new car. It was powered by an air-cooled horizontal six-cylinder engine made almost entirely out of aluminum. The engine was mounted in the rear of the car, driving the rear wheels through a compact automatic transaxle. Suspension was independent at all four wheels. There was no conventional frame; it was the first Unibody built by Fisher Body and the styling was unconventional for Detroit, subtle and elegant, with no tail fins or chrome grille.
This Monza Corvair has a 164ci engine, as well as a 4-speed manual transmission, and other options consistent with a Monza model. The overall car is showing in fair condition, mechanically sound, and true to 1968 model. A repainted exterior in fair condition, with a few blemishes and scratches.
Exterior
A previous respray of Fathom Blue drapes the exterior of this sporty air-cooled car. There are areas of scratching, chipping and a few dents and dings, and some dimpling with areas of inclusions picked up in the respray, as the entire exterior shows in fair condition. A white padded canvas convertible top moves up and down, however has some rips and tears particularly along the window surround areas. The rear plastic window has discoloration and some fogging over, and there are scratches within the field of clear plastic. A tonneau cover in a lighter shade of blue covers the folded down top very nicely. Chrome badging, brite work, bumpers, and trim are in good condition shiny and mostly free of corrosion and dimpling. Corvair standard Monza style wheel covers are noted on all 4 corners.
Interior
Believed to be original, vinyl buckets up front, and a bench in the rear passenger section, the surfaces are slightly worn and have a few tears mainly along seams of the driver's bucket. The dash is also original, with blue padded top, and black textured facing for the instrument section and glovebox door. Gauges are clean and the original radio is still installed but has a few parts missing (trim and knobs) and an aftermarket radio hangs below the dash. The original steering wheel fronts the dash, which it seems as the lighter has gone missing as well. Blue carpet in fair condition floods the floor, shows a few tears, fading and stains. The floor shifter resides between the buckets and is surrounded by the carpet.
Drivetrain
A clean, and seemingly restored engine sits in the rear engine bay. A bit cramped, it shares space with the spare wedged in at the side. The engine is 164ci "Turbo Air" (doesn't mean it has one though!) 6-cylinder air cooled with 95 horsepower and is fitted with a 2-barrel carburetor on top. The standard 4-speed manual transmission is within the rear section as well and drives the rear wheels.
Undercarriage
The unibody undercarriage appears solid and rust free. Noted is 4-wheel independent suspension, and 4-wheel drum brakes.
Overall runs smoothly and is believed to have a restored engine. Paint and interior are fair and interior is all original. Some spit shine, sanding, and interior fixes, and you will have a nice example of an innovative car from 1968.
