1966 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
A small highly maneuverable warship that typically escorted larger armed fleets is the origin of the name Corvette. Chevrolet introduced the second-generation Corvette, which had an emphasis on aerodynamics, had hidden headlights, a fastback rear window and cowling, and a hood design that included an air scoop with a pointed spear in the center of the hood. The design was reminiscent of the sea creature named Stingray with its wide graceful wings and long spear like tail that floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee!
This second owner purchased this car in 1968. It is a "survivor car" with all matching numbers and original parts; except for the replacement of the dual exhaust with side pipes). It was bought by the consigner to impress his then girlfriend. As she was put to the task of regularly cleaning the interior and wiping out the original gas tank removing residue, (there is a lost rag story there too!) their relationship blossomed, and they became husband and wife. I guess one could say purchasing the car for its original intention worked!
Exterior
The Milano Maroon paint is original and shows some history with door keyed scratches inflicted by a disgruntled army private to retaliate against his superior on the passenger side door. Some fiberglass work has been done on the hood around the badging and is less than perfect, as is an attempted repair spot underneath the front grille. Typical scratching and some touch up areas are present, but the all original paint is in good condition considering the car is 52 years old. New Stainless exhaust side piping wrapped by chrome heat shields grace either side of the car. Original door hardware and trim are in good condition, and door fit with curved top framing fits with slight misalignment. The hood sports the larger side vented scoop with stinger design to accommodate the 427 engine option. Cast aluminum Original knock-off hubcaps and newly installed gold wall radials are two added options that were purchased with this original car. An underside view shows surface rusting throughout the frame, however there is no body work and no frame damage. (all original bonding strips are intact).
Interior
Near perfect original condition Saddle vinyl bucket seats piped in saddle color, sit in a sea of gold pile carpeting. The dual cowl dash houses instruments on driver's side, and glove box on passenger side and are trimmed in saddle vinyl color. A vertical connecting center console has original clock, as well as a vertically mounted AM/FM radio with a new power antenna. An original chrome shift lever and small armrest for both passengers is found between the bucket seats. Headliner is original and in very good condition. The original scissor jack is installed in the compartment behind the drivers' seat. All windows and mirrors are original.
Drivetrain
The 427 Turbojet, 390hp V8 engine has all matching numbers as well as the chassis and drivetrain. The original carburetor was replaced and has been fitted with a new correct carburetor (easier to replace than rebuild original carburetor). Consigner states that he has retained all original replaced parts and they will be included with the purchase of this vehicle. A 4-speed manual transmission connects to a rear suspension with frame-mounted differential unit, double universal jointed tubular axles, positraction 3.55 rear, and transverse multi-leaf springs. Differential carrier is mounted to frame by rubber-isolated with hardened and tempered chrome carbon steel which leaves bolts solidly to differential carrier and attaches to radius arms with rubber-isolated floating rods. A new GM OEM numbers matching fuel tank and filler tube replaced the original rusted tank and has new mounting brackets which can be seen in the rear underside view. The front suspension includes coil spring spherical joint suspension with concentric springs and shock absorbers between upper and lower control arms. Built-in anti-dive control and rubber-bushed link-type stabilizer bar. Quiet, low-friction non-metallic spherical joint liners. Spherical joints protected by special positive-sealing formed-rubber boots.
This original matching number Corvette with the 427 Turbojet option, side pipes and many more options are a must see for any Corvette aficionado. The odometer is showing 51,853 miles, but those are not confirmed as original miles. As stated all original parts that were replaced have been retained and can be worked by new owner and re-installed, if desired. The car has been well cared for, driven very little and performs like it just drove from the dealership. Beautiful design and mostly all original. This car still possesses the ability to bring you a thrill and take you back to 1966.
