Intended to debut in 1976. production delays held up the restyle until this year. Now hidden behind the sleek new nose was the impact absorbing crash structure able to withstand greater than 5MPH impacts. The rear tail lights were redesigned as well. now incorporating 3-color lenses on either side of the fuel door in the center. The license plate was relocated to a molded in section of the rear bumper. The Camaro wasn't just continuing to blow the competition away on the street. but it beat the rival Mustang in the showroom again. outselling the Ford 247. 37 to 179. 39. There was no competition. numbers Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts. but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example. all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly. item number description VIN 1Q87U8L566616 The first digit. "1. quot; indicated the Chevrolet division of GM. The "7" is the year the carb was produced. which indicates the carburetor is dated October 27. 1977. condition Exterior The Red and Black exterior is in fully restored beautiful condition. One professional repaint with new decals over original sheet metal was performed on this Rally Sport and it looks stunning. The car was very rust free prior to the repaint and no rust repair was needed according to the previous owner. just some minor door dings and rock chips needed addressed. The decals are correct GM replacements and really look splendid on the car. As one can see in the photos. the paint has a brilliant gloss. deep shine. and smooth finish. Often times many Camaro's will have particularly chipped up front ends. as one can see in the photos this car does not and the low front end is in excellent shape. Both urethane bumpers are original and in great condition with no spider webbing or flaking paint. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There may be some very faint blemishes around the car that were too small to show up in the photos. but nothing that is really noticeable from about five feet away. The tires are in brand new condition with 100% tread left. They were literally just installed and sized 225/70/14. The original rally wheels were painted body color as well and are in excellent shape. shine nicely. and have no curb rash. The trunk is very solid and rust free and nicely detailed with a correct trunk mat and original space saver spare tire. jack and jack accessories. All weather-stripping has been replaced on this car including: window seals. door seals. window sweeps. and trunk seal. The Camaro looks just as good in person as it does in the photos. Interior The Black vinyl interior of this Rally Sport looks utterly splendid. The seats look excellent with no rips. split seems. or signs of excessive wear. The carpet appears to be recently replaced and is in excellent condition with no stains. tears. or holes. The original dash is in excellent condition with no dash cracks or fading. and is not warped in the middle and backside like most other Camaro's of this era. The original style radio is still installed in its factory position but is currently not working. Most importantly. the dash remains uncut and unmolested after all these years preserving the originality of this fine Rally Sport. All of the gauges work as they should. with the obvious exception of the clock. The new door panels look fantastic with no excessive wear. and both door pulls are solid and in tact. The Headliner is in excellent shape with no stains or sagging and was recently replaced with a new headliner board as well. The package tray was just replaced too and is in new condition with no fading or warping. This car has no aroma of cigarettes what so ever. Both front seat belts operate well and retract correctly. which is a very common problem on GM cars from this era and a small detail many buyers do not check. These Camaro interiors are not know to wear well and the excellent condition of this interior is a testament to the meticulous care and attention this car has received throughout its life. The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos. Mechanical This Rally Sport is in great mechanical condition. It is an exceptional driver that feels great on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph. braking to stoplight. and going through some curves. Please note that it shifts well. runs great. there are no strange vibrations. and the car performs quite nice overall. It starts right away every time. idles well. and runs excellent. The car shifts well and the clutch feels good. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. This Camaro really handles nicely. Also. the engine is clean and nicely detailed as one can see from the photos. There is no smoke when driving the car. The blower for the heater and a/c works as do the wipers. the speedometer. tachometer. odometer. fuel. and battery gauges all work as they should. This Rally Sport has true Magnaflow dual exhaust with no catalytic converter and has a nice healthy exhaust note at idle and cruising speeds. This exhaust system was just upgraded from exhaust manifolds to exit tail pipes and is in excellent condition as one can see in the underside photos below. The a/c compressor will sometimes kick on. but it has not been properly tested due to the extremely cold temperatures here this winter. One can see the compressor engaging in the video below. The previous owner did mention that the system worked as it should the last time he used the AC. There is a very slight exhaust leak on the passenger side. The parking brake works and hold the car. but the release can be a little finicky. the horn does not work. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car. especially with the 4-speed transmission on a beautiful day. Overall Condition Overall. this 1978 Rally Sport in excellent condition. Numbers matching is getting extremely important in Camaro pricing. especially with rare and desirable models like this Rally Sport with the 4-Speed transmission. and as one can see this car is very original and correct. The restored condition. rarity. build sheet. original documentation. and the great extent to which the numbers match make this Camaro especially important and hard to duplicate. It is a great value and we have it priced to sell. This car turns heads and gets tons of attention wherever it goes. The value of these second generation "F-Body" cars has gone up exponentially in recent years. They are all solid investments for a collector or the average enthusiast. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson and Mecum stars of the future. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
