Car description |

1968 K20 ( 3/4 ton) 4x4 Suburban with 25,949 original miles and 292 motor. RARE -- ONLY 299 K20 4x4Suburban's werebuiltin 1968.
Every vehicle most likely has a story and this is the story of "Old Blue". This Suburban has been inour family since it was brand new. It was ordered factoryfresh by a family member ( WW-I U.S. ArmyVeteran) ashe wanted to go prospecting in Nevada. In 1972 he passed away and my dad inherited"old blue".Old Bluewas used exclusively "year round" on ourNorthern Illinoisfarm.Since we did not have a shop or garage Old Bluesat outside and winters here are extremelyharsh with temps sometimes down to -40.Weused"Old Blue"as a farm truck and for errands and chores, especially during the winter months. It pulled a water tank to the field to water hogs and hauled LP gas bottles to watertank heaters( we raised hogs outdoors in those days).
This old girlnever left a 10 mile radius of the farm since itwasnew. In 1978-79 during "the greatblizzard"; I actually learned to drive this Suburban. We were out of power and heat for nearly2 weeks in this rural areaand this was the only 4x4around. I can remember borrowing my dads pliers toturn "lock in" the front hubs. We had todrive to the localhardware store for 10 gallons of white kerosene. There isno doubt in my mindwe would have frozen to deathwithout the lifeline"Old Blue' provided this family. We huddled around a kerosene heater inArmy Surplussleeping bags (leftover from Korea) in order to keep from freezing to death.Suffice to say, this old girl holds many wonderfulmemories for me and this family and it always got the job done. If there was a JD4020 tractor stuck on ice "Old Blue" would grunt and growl in 1st gear but she would alwayssave the day. What a great vehicle !
In 1995, we stopped raising livestock and dad was nearing retirement from his law enforcement career ( off farm job). I backed"Old Blue"into the barnand Idroveher for the last time.We were all grown up nowand going our own directions in life.Unfortunately, my father passed awayand we are nowcleaning up around the farm. This is an actual "barn find" and it is stillparked in the family barn. My mom actuallyteared up when she saw me pull it out into the sunlightfor the first time in all these years. The miles are 100% original on the odometer andwe have the title. The frame is rock solid strong butunfortunately thebody isrough and it needs rocker panels, fenders, quarter panels and some prettyextensive body work.
We have not tried to start the motor as it has been parked far too long and the left rear wheel ( brake) is locked up.This uber rare 1968 Suburban( ONLY 299 Built)K20 Suburban needs and really deserves a full frame off restoration. It was repainted by a local shop in the 1980's as dad really wanted to preserve this vehicle, but it was not a quality job. In the photos you will see the red primerthat wasused and the bluepaint flaking off.
I wish more than anything in the worldwe could keep "Old Blue" andhave some legendary car restoration shop / builderlikeCountsKustoms(Danny the CountKoker)bring her back to originalcondition, but that's justnot financially feasible and even though I ama"car guy" I don't have the time, experienceor themoney to restore "Old Blue.
