Car description

1971 Chevelle Malibu Convertible - Original Survivor - 71,950 Miles - Rust Free Texas Car - No Reserve

1971 Chevelle Malibu Convertible 350 V8, 2 BBL Carburetor, 350 Turbo Transmission, Factory Working Cold A/C, Power Steering, Power Convertible Top, AM/FM Radio, Windshield Antenna, 12 Bolt Rear End. I have owned this car for the past 14 years and diligently looked at many Chevelles before finding this one. This car is originally from Texas and retains all original, rust free sheet metal, original power convertible top and drivetrain. Everything works on this car except for the clock and windshield washer. The car runs, drives and stops well and is very reliable. If you are looking for an exceptional, never rusted, original condition Chevelle convertible, this one is a rare find.

History

The trim tag shows car was built at the GM Arlington, Texas Assembly facility during the 1st week of May 1971. The paint code is "11 A PNT" which is Antique White base color and a white convertible top. It also has interior trim code "TR 721" which reflects an Antique Dark Saddle Bench Seat. It didn't travel far from the assembly plant and was sold new by Steakley Chevrolet in Dallas, Texas - dealer emblem is still on trunk lid. I don't know the original owner's name, but understand it was a lady who owned it until sometime in 2003 when she gave the car to her grand-daughter. On July 2, 2003, her grand-daughter took the car to a Nissan dealer in Austin, Texas and traded it for a newer car. The Nissan Used Car Manager purchased the car and shortly thereafter sold it to a friend in San Antonio, Texas. His friend kept the car less than a year before listing it for sale. I flew into San Antonio to look at the car and bought it April 6, 2004. I made arrangements to have the car shipped in an enclosed trailer to Ohio where it has always been garage kept and never in any rain or inclement weather. The car had 67,792 miles when I bought it and I have added a just over 4,000 miles during the past 14 years.

Body

All of the body panels - floors, trunk, fenders, doors, quarters - are all in excellent, never rusted condition. I estimate the car was repainted 25+ years ago and it was a "driver quality" paint job. The door jambs, inner doors, bottom of trunk lid and areas around trunk and hood were not painted, retain the original paint and look great. The driver door has the original GM decal with the VIN number still in place. There is no evidence to suggest the car has ever been wrecked. I found a place on the right rear quarter panel where it was possibly scraped against a garage door opening or something similar and repaired with a some filler. Most people wouldn't notice and speculating the car was repainted as part of the repair. The paint is still very shiny and looks nice. The worst part about the body is that it has multiple parking lot dings and some minor paint chips.

Convertible Top

The white convertible top is original to the car and is in amazing condition when you consider it is 43 years old. There are 2 very small stress cracks (one on each side) in the top corners. The top's inside liner, boot and framework are also in very good condition with no cuts, scratches or stains. The glass rear window does not have any scratches or discoloration and the power top operates perfectly up and down. The original parade boot is also included and is shown in the pictures.

Interior

The tan interior and dash are all original and in excellent condition. The seats show normal wear and it is possible the front seat cover was repaired or replaced at one time. The dash is all original with working OEM AM-FM radio connected to the factory windshield antenna. All of the windows roll up and down as they should and do not have any obvious scratches. The car is very solid and there are no rattles.

Drivetrain

The drivetrain is 100% stock / original. The engine is stamped with T0504CGC which translates to 350 cubic inches, 2 bbl carb, 245 HP and TH-350 transmission. It also has 11R179992 stamp which matches the car serial number. The A/C compressor was replaced at some time with an OEM style replacement. It has been converted to R-134a and blows cold. I detailed the engine compartment a few years ago. All hoses, belts, valve cover gaskets were replaced with a tune up at the same time. The engine is obviously re-painted, but most of the paint on inner fenders and firewall is original to car and cleaned up nice. The previous owner added the aluminized dual magnaflow exhaust which has a nice look and sound. The engine always starts quick - cold or hot and does not burn or leak oil. The TH-350 transmission shifts well and is connected to the 12 bolt open rear end. The suspension is all stock, retains original springs and has manual drum brakes. The frame is solid and does not exhibit any signs of rust. The car drives straight, accelerates and stops well and does not pull or have any vibrations. The car is reliable and I would be confident driving it on a long trip.

Wheels and Tires

The car is pictured with polished aluminum American Racing Wheels on P235/60 R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. I also have the original factory rally wheels mounted on P235/60 R14 BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. Winning bidder will have choice of either wheel / tire set with the option to buy the other set for $500.

Other

All of the chrome trim and grill is in good condition with very few dings or scratches. The front bumper has a small dent just to the right of the license plate. I replaced the rear bumper as it had several small dents and other imperfections. The lights are all in good working order and do not have any cracks, corrosion or discoloration. The weather stripping around the doors and windows is getting hard and has areas where it has deteriorated. The trunk compartment was detailed a few years ago with OEM spatter paint and replacement mat. The original bumper jack and rally wheel spare are in good condition and included.
