I didn't. yet here it is. in the flesh! Fewer than 1000 cars were so equipped. but this superbly restored example not only brings the 4-speed. but backs it with a strong-running ZZ4 crate motor that allows this sport/luxury coupe to more than live up to its billing. Looking a bit like a NASCAR stocker for the street. this cool blue Monte Carlo was repainted in 2004. but it looks like just last year thanks to expert care and maintenance since it was completed. Obviously someone loved this car. deciding to preserve and upgrade it rather than letting it vanish into the dustbin of history like so many of its siblings. And truthfully. the angular Monte Carlo shape has aged rather well and still looks awesome today. Nothing GM was building in 1978 fit together this well. with sharp door gaps and hinges that don't sag. plus only enough chrome trim to make it look upscale without being overdone. Most remarkably. the urethane bumper trim remains in excellent shape. with even the insert under the rear license plate being in top condition. Correct badges and emblems were reinstalled when the paint was dry. along with a small ZZ4 crossed-flag emblem on the front fenders. an old school touch that is intended to warn off predators. The light blue interior sports rare bucket seats. which were mandatory with the 4-speed and its attendant mini console. The rest is familiar Monte Carlo. from the long doors to the angular instrument panel that wraps around the driver. It appears to be mostly original and in remarkably good condition. although the carpets have been replaced at some point. A full factory gauge package includes a tachometer. another rare feature of the 4-speed Monte Carlo. and a pair of Auto Meter auxiliary gauges has been mounted below the center stack. The shifter is topped with a Hurst T-handle which seems appropriate for the kind of performance this car can generate. and while it may feel a little odd at first. it's an absolute joy to rip through the gears in this unique coupe. Other big positives include a headliner that doesn't sag. an original AM radio (this car was obviously built for just one thing). and a nicely detailed trunk complete with space saver spare and jack assembly. While the original engine was also a 350 cubic inch V8. that's about all it has in common with the strong-running ZZ4 crate engine that lives there now. Adding to the NASCAR look. the black valve covers with CHEVROLET emblazoned across their faces. plus a matching open-element air cleaner make this aluminum-headed V8 look awesome. There's also a big aluminum radiator up front and long-tube headers for the exhaust. all designed to make the most of the 4-speed manual transmission that is this car's most unique feature. You'll note that there's power steering but manual brakes. again suggesting that the guy who envisioned this car's build had only one thing in mind: performance at all costs. Underneath. it was also thoroughly restored. including a Flowmaster exhaust system with X-pipe. a complete Hotchkiss suspension. and a heavy-duty Moser G-body 9-inch rear end with 3. 31 gears inside. the perfect choice for this combination. Centerline wheels were powdercoated black. then fitted with big 255/70/15 Goodyear meats. completing the race-ready look. Documented with receipts. original bill of sale. original invoice. a reproduction window sticker. and maintenance records. this is an awesome piece of little-known Chevy history.
