Its rock-solid vintage appearance is evident with just a quick glance, but this 1965 Chevrolet C10 Stepside has much more going for it than just nostalgia. Sure, it's endured more than a half-century of service in great form, but it's also configured with the power to knock you back in its bench seat and all the comfort you'd want in a frequent driver.
Just taking a lap around this classic pickup and observing the well-fitted body, with a spare tire displayed on its rear flanks, conveys the notion that it's eager to handle whatever comes its way. The white exterior carries a nice shine with painted front and rear bumpers that offer a nice touch of customization yet don't encroach upon its workman-like vibe. Step around to the front and you'll see that the grille and headlight bezels look particularly strong, with clean chrome that really pops against the backdrop of white. Chevy went to a more modern, relatively straight windshield by the mid-'60s era, and this one is in good form, showing clear glass and surrounded by a fresh-looking rubber seal. Look below and you'll find the welcome absence of blistering on the rocker panels. The textured blue bowtie painted onto the tailgate is a great added detail that's all the more effective because of the restraint shown when customizing the rest of the body.
Climb inside and you'll find a nicely refurbished interior. With just a few exceptions, it's held onto the look it had more than a half century ago, and the changes that have been made create a classic that's a pleasure to drive. The bench seat has plenty of padding for comfort and a very clean black vinyl surface, with a Lokar shifter within easy reach. An AM/FM/CD stereo sits in the smooth white steel of the dash area and power speakers mounted both in the doors and B pillars to fill the cabin with sound. Just below, you'll see underdash vents indicating that this noble truck has been equipped with an aftermarket air conditioning system, and it's blowing cold and strong to keep you and your passenger comfortable while on the road. The bed area in back is bracketed by straight walls, and while it shows some wear and could be updated, it remains very usable as it is.
As far as mechanical components are concerned, this C10 really shines, as it's configured with plenty of power to go along with a level of drivability that'll make you want to get behind the wheel whenever possible. A 383 stroker V8 sits under the broad hood, topped with a chrome Edelbrock air cleaner, with a pair of very cool looking, matte-black Chevy valve covers at its sides and a chrome alternator just in front. Surrounded by fresh hoses and well-routed wiring, the engine is in top form, pulling strong, and sounding great as it breathes into a pair of headers leading to its dual exhaust. It teams with a 4-speed automatic 700r4 transmission to make an inspired, versatile drivetrain equally at home on the boulevard as it is on the highway. With power steering and power brakes that feature discs up front, this Chevy is an easy driver that can stop promptly when needed. The undercarriage remains very solid and features a dropped ladder steel frame that was revolutionary for its time, providing plenty of support and allowing this truck to sit lower than its predecessors on its set of 15" painted stock Chevy wheels outfitted with Michelin tires.
