February 1961 saw the unveiling of a true icon: The Chevy Impala Super Sport. The Super Sport was a very special version in Chevrolet's most luxurious line; combining top-of-the line luxury with a peak performance power team and true sports car equipment. The mandatory optional equipment required for the Super Sport increased the price substantially. There were only 453 factory produced Super Sports in 1961. Only one manufacturing plant included the SS on the trim tag and that was Los Angeles, CA. This car was built in LA, the 3rd week in February 1961, and does have"SS" on the trim tag. I am the current owner for the past 22 years. The car is in excellent condition with no scratches, dings, or dents and totally rust free. The interior is also in excellent condition. It has a 348/305 hp engine with a High-Performance Powerglide. The 305 hp was the ONLY engine available with the automatic transmission.Air conditioning is just one of themany options on the car. It is a 5 time AACA Senior Grand National winner, Late Great Gold Certificate winner, Carlisle ALL GM Nationals Invitational Display and two time Celebrity Pick winner. The car was featured in Chevy Times Magazine and was on the front cover. In February 1961, General Motors put out the Impala Super Sport Supplement showingModel Application for All 1800 Series except Nomad Station Wagon. A photograph of this supplement is shown. The car has been stored for about 6 years and not driven. Mechanically the car is very sound. All four brake wheel cylinders need to be replaced. The turn signal switch in the steering column needs to bereplaced (the right turn signal wants to stay on). The air conditioner needs Freon.
