Serial Number: 11867J100663IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE: In 1961 they did not stamp the last 6 digits of the VIN number on the motor except on Corvettes. The date casting code is correct for 1961. The engine code stamped on the pad of the motor is D R which is correct for a 283 4-bbl carb engine & the heads have the "SNOWFLAKE" which indicates "POWER-PAK" Cylinder Heads. hence 230 Horsepower Here is the Serial Number or VIN number decoded: 1=196118=Impala V-867=Convertible BodyJ=Manufactured in the Janesville. Wisconsin Plant100663=Production Number The complete SS Trim Package which includes all SS Emblems on the body of the car. The SS Spinners & Emblems. and the interior SS Grab Bar were added to this car by a dealer. Cost including labor to have this done professionally ranges between $1800-$2000. The SS TRIM WAS ADDED TO THIS CAR. IT WAS NOT AN SS FROM THE FACTORY. IT WAS AN IMPALA. Back in 1961 if you wanted to order the SS Trim package when you ordered your car. the SS Trim option was only $63. 10 However there was a "CATCH". In order to receive the SS Trim package you also were required to order a ton of other options which when added up. were more than the cost of your average Corvette. MSRP of an SS Convertible would range in price from a low of $4100 to a high of OVER $5000. Required were either the 348 or 409 Engine. A padded dash. Narrow white wall tires. Sintered Metallic Brakes. A Posi-traction rear end. 4/Speed transmission. and a 7000RPM Sun Tach that came in a box and was usually mounted to the steering column by the delivering Chevrolet Dealership. So how many TOTAL SS or Super Sport Impalas were produced in 1961-the 1st year of the Super Sport??? My sources which are excellent tell me a total of 453 SS Impalas were made in 1961 and the vast majority were hardtops. Only a mere handful of Impala SS Convertibles were produced in 1961. That explains why a 348/305HP Solid lifter camshaft. 4/speed convertible was on the market back in 2012 for almost $150. 00. and I was told the car was sold for approximately $140. 00. and in my opinion. I think the car was well worth it considering the rarity. Of the 453 SS cars made. only 142 were made with the 409 Engine when production was halted! The reason for this was Chevy was having a serious issue with the cylinder heads warping. so production was halted and wasn't begun again until 1962 when the warping cylinder head problems were corrected. This magnificent Tuxedo Black convertible can be bought for a fraction of what you would have to pay for a documented 348 solid lifter. nbsp;4/speed car or an even rarer and much more expensive 409 4/speed solid lifter car. It is believed that LESS than 15 Super Sport Convertibles were produced with these engine and transmission options. some say ONLY 10. others believe it is 12 but almost everyone agrees that at the very most 15 were made and here are the facts of ownership of a high performance 348 or 409 between 1960. 1961 and 1961. I owned a 1960 348/335HP 4/speed Impala in 1960 and I blew up 3 Cylinder Blocks (could not be rebuilt) One of my best friends had a high-performance solid lifter Impala SS Coupe in 1961. Luby Chevrolet replaced 2 blocks under warranty. but the 3rd block was on the wallet of his Dad. hence the car was sold at the end of 1961. In 1962 I owned and Campaigned a 409 Black SS ("Black Thunder. sponsored by Jim Rathmann Chevrolet in Melbourne. FL) and when I scattered my 6th engine in less than a year. I sold the car with a 7th replacement block in the car. My point is. should you find a 1961 SS Coupe or Convertible with either the 348 or the 409 High-performance motor. 4/speed transmission. I seriously doubt of it has its original factory block. These engines were notorious for breaking rods. spinning bearings. heavy oil consumption. wiping out crankshafts. cracking cylinder walls. dropping valves. breaking valve springs and warping cylinder heads. If stuck in a heavy traffic jam and it was a 90 degree day. your 404/409 would be sure to overheat. It happened to me countless times. I just had to pull over. wait for the engine to cool down and the traffic to thin out. either that or ruin yet another motor! I was fortunate due to my relationship with Jim Rathmann who was like an Uncle to me. to have met on several occasions. Zora Arkus Duntov (and his wife Elfie). Ed Cole who was National Sales Manager of Chevrolet and went on to hold a much higher position in General Motors and Bruce Crower (Crower Camshafts & Pistons) and all three told me that the best engine ever offered in a passenger car or a Corvette from the reliability and dollar per pound performance was the 283/230 HP engine. which is just what came with this car. This car starts up the 1st time. every time and is EXTREMELY reliable and gets pretty good gas mileage. about 23mpg on the highway and 14-16 mpg in the City. You can run regular or mid-grade gas. but I prefer the hi-test because it burns cleaner and gives the car a tad better performance. The basic 348/250hp engine with a 4bbl carb and duals does produce 20 more Horsepower than the 283/230hp engine but the 348 and the 409 were truck motors before Chevy started using them in passengers cars and they are HEAVY! They are often referred to as the "W" engine. They weigh approx. 300 pounds more than a 283 so the performance due to the weight factor is really even. additional added benefits are realized as soon as you drive this car compared to the same car with a 348 engine. there is 300 pounds less weight on the front end and this makes the 283 powered car a real joy to drive. it is quieter. it handles a lot better. it gets better gas mileage. it is far. far more reliable and easier to maintain and it accelerates as well as a 348/250hp car even though it's rated 20hp less. I have driven this car 70-75mph on the Florida Turnpike and it is indeed an absolute joy to drive. After driving the car. I parked it inside an air-conditioned garage and place flat cardboard knocked down boxes under the entire undercarriage and left the car parked for 3 days. When I started the car. I left it idle and warm up and backed the car off the cardboard flat boxes. there was no sign of any oil. gas. water or other fluids dripping or leaking from this car. This is most unusual as most 50 plus year old cars. even those restored. do leak something when driven and then parked. However. there is no guarantee that a leak or leaks could develope one day in the future. but none are apparent at this time. We removed the air cleaner and sprayed the outside of the Rochester quadrajet 4 barrell carb with a little brake cleaner to clean off the slight bit of grime that had accumated since the restoration was done and to also take a good photo of the carb. We dried the brake cleaner off (a slight bit of the cleaner reside remained and can be seen in the photo) and then started the car and let it idle for 10 minutes to make sure there were no fuel leaks from the carb or the fuel lines or fuel filter. there was no evidence of any fuel leaks anywhere on this car. nor is there any smell of any fuel leaks and we checked from the fuel tank all the way to the carb. This car idled for 10-15 minutes with the AC on and showed no tendency to run warm. a 348 or 409 engine never liked to idle in heavy traffic. especially with the AC on. The previous owner installed a battery cut-off switch on one of the battery terminals as he told me he never drove the car during the winter months or in any type of bad weather and would sometimes leave the car sit for 3-4 weeks at a time. but would start & run the car at least once a month. which is always a good idea. Also he put a gas protector like Stabil in his fuel tank every 6 months. ( another good maintenance step to follow. ) Here are just some of the great features of the magnificent Chevy Convertible. Power Steering Power Brakes Power Top Air-Conditioning: It features the new style air-conditioning vents & still retains the factory original controls inside the car with an original 60's period style Compressor for the correct engine compartment look. and it blows Ice Cold. Dual Exhausts Fender Skirts (I personally do not like the look of fender skirts on this car. mainly because when utilized they hide the beautiful SS Spinner Wheel Covers. The skirts are originals. not reproductions and will be wrapped in plastic inside a car cover which is included with this car. ) Red Color keyed safety seat belts (front & rear-two in the front & three in the rear) Red Padded Dash White wall steel belted radial tires Original Delco AM Radio (not working). NOTE. should you want a modern AM/FM Stereo/140W/CD Player with remotecontrol installed in the glove box or mounted neatly & carefully under the dash with a pair of qualitystereo speakers in their own enclosures installed under the seat facing rear. we can have it done for $399 installed which is our EXACT COST! No holes are drilled and no carpeting is cut or altered. Keys: There are 4 keys which come with this car. one of the keys is the 1961 Original GM key with "knock out stamped on the keys. When delivered. the original keys had a 4 digit code which was used to duplicate the keys. so Chevrolet wanted the owner to knock out this area and save the codes. otherwise. when you parked your car with a valet. anyone could copy down the code and have a duplicate key made to your car. The underside is beautifully finished with the correct red oxide primer and is in EXCELLENT condition. The Convertible top. top boot. interior. carpeting are excellent and the convertible top works perfect and has an excellent fit. notice the photos of the top and the windows all rolled up. you can see how really good the fit is. The trunk area is immaculate and the car has both trunk mats and floor mats. Carpeting is beautiful. The Chrome bumpers. mirrors. glass. and pot metal are also excellent. I found some small pitting on the chrome release control knob to move the front seat back & forth. we are trying to locate a replacement knob-this one works fine. The one on the car is most likely from 1961. If we can find one. it will be included with the sale of this car. The paint has a gorgeous deep shine that looks like you could put your hand inside the paint & and the body is excellent. The paint on the car which has multiple coats of the best modern day paint is far superior than what existed back in 1961. The fit on the car is fabulous. the doors open and close with ease and the hood. trunk. windows. etc. all align up as well as any car that was manufactured in America in 1961. I will admit that Mercedes Benz were in a class all by themselves when it came to fit and finish in 1961 and I think the same holds true today. of course the cost of a Mercedes back then and now reflects that you still get what you pay for in production automobiles. When this car was restored the odometer was set to zero so the mileage indicate is how many miles this car has been driven since restored. There are some very tiny scratches which cannot be seen in the photos which one would expect from driving a car almost 4700 miles on the highway or in the City. In my opinion it is nothing that would require repainting and they are too small to show up in photos. even with our high definition digital camera. The horn. turn signals. head lights. heater/defroster. wipers all work correctly. The clock does NOT work. If you so desire. you can send it off to one of the vintage clock restorers who advertise each month in Hemmings. The can fix the old mechanism or even better. replace the inner workings with a modern quartz movement and keep the outside all original and 1961 in appearance. Since restored. I don't think this car has spent a single night outdoors. so one should not considered buying a car like this unless you have a garage to keep it safe and dry. The prior owner acquired the car shortly after the restoration was completed. He has owned this car for the past 8 or 9 years and has driven the car approximately 4000 miles. The only reason he reluctantly decided to sell his car at this time is unfortunately due to very serious health issues. I had the pleasure of speaking with him on a couple of occasions. he is a real "car guy" and an absolute true gentleman. He did not have the copies of the mountain of bills & receipts for the restoration. so for that reason I didn't receive them with the car. but the condition of the car speaks for itself! This car was done right and that is why it still looks and runs as well as it does. several years after the restoration process was completed. I have seen cars restored that looked great for 2 or 3 years. but after the passage of time. various issues began to show up. not the case with this breathtaking Impala Convertible. All the floor pans and trunk pan are solid & in excellent condition! There is no such thing as a perfectly restored car that is 54 years old but I think this car will delight any car lover and car collector. It turns heads and causes a sensation where ever you drive it! Shipping: If you need help shipping this car in the U. S. or anywhere else in this world.
