The AFX van story....Ioriginally designed this to be the WRIF "Baby" Big DaddyArthur P Pennhollow Maui Timetribute Van. Butit was a little too late as Big DaddyArthurP as he retired from WRIF and soone nightI changed the the over to the AFX theme the shop at about 1am. I was up after midnight looking at racecar images and I decided to paint the stripes on the van that minute and started taping it up. I did not plan to add the AFX logo until a few days later. There is no association oraffiliationwith AFX for the build in anyway. AFX has never made a slot car van that looked like this. Ithought up the scheme in different colorsas a different theme van and then adoptedadded stripes between the wheel wellsand thenumber 3similar toa old Lola AFX slot car. Other than that, the scheme is as I first drew it up.I thought AFX's company repswould dig it buttheir response wasthat they would never create a slot car like it. So that is that, this was just my1am idea. The wheels are circa 1980Shelby International Vectors, cleaned, CNC machined powdercoated victory red, painted orange metal flake with candy red clear over the top and final clear powder coat. Pics do not do justice, when the sunlight hits them, they light up. The tires are new duratracs with less than 200 miles on them.
The van is actuallya 1986 not a 1976, but I do not have the vin number with me at the moment while typing this out- I will add the vin shortly. The title is in my name. I have owned for 6years. For the first few years I owned it, I would fly out west and every couple months I drovemy vanalloverthe deserthunting wheels and my next rides to customize with the DVW vision.About 3 years ago Ithen drove it toMichigan. Ihavestored winters and kept in side the shop year round.I have put less than 1000 miles on the van since bringing it back to Michigan (that is why I am offering it up - I simply am not using it) There are various dings and dents,but ithas no accidents, and I am the 3rd owner.The hi-top is not desireable to many. However to those that like to put their pants on standing up and do other things standing up, We know its a very rare van to locate if you are 6 foot tall and too old to crawl around on your knees in vans.If its notwhat you like that's cool man there are a lot of otherregular shortys out therethat need a good home. The AFX van starts up and runs great and is reliable and dependable to even after a long 4 month hibernation over winter. never seen snow or salted road. There has never been any rust or repaired rust. There are no shakesshimmys or vibrations accelerating, cruising,or when braking. The ride issmooth as a Cadillac with theGoodyears.
The paint job is no pro job! I simply taped this off and painted it right in my open shop - no paint booth. It does NOT look like perfection, however most people love it just the way it is. This van represents what you can do in your own driveway with your own ideas.It is basically like a big toy, kids absolutely love it. A lot of adults dig it too. To me it represents a part of my childhood. I see it like a toy I never seen before and its just like the ones I remember. And that really is my entire outlook with building cars/trucks/vans and Detroit Vintage Wheels....I like to make things look just like you remember and still be something you have never seen like this before.
The next owner of the van could easily just drive it as it is, but I would hope that they would continue to build upon the AFX theme with the interior and maybe have the paint re-done professionally. The van does not have to be sold. I am just offering it up to anyone who may see it and really wants to be the next owner of it. It is my plan that the van stays a DVW van and in time as business grows, redo itto show quality levels.I had a gentleman who wanted to buy it to use as a ice-cream van...please this is not what I want to see the AFX van as...but if the owner did it wall and didn't let the van go to crap like every other icecream van I see...and instead wanted to preserve it and keep the cool AFX.

I currently have it in storage and must fly in to Detroit and clean it out and get it ready for delivery - replace exhaust and peform tune up.
