  • 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 with 57,000 documented original miles. Built in Norwood, Ohio. This is a TRUE survivor! I have several service work receipts showing mileage increases from 18,590 in May of ’69 to 53,347 in August 15th of ‘75. Car sat for many years. Car was started several times over the years in storage. The Engine, Transmission and Rear Axle Assembly are all OEM Chevrolet and original to this car new from the factory. All Engin, Transmission, Rear Axle casting and assembly dates are dated late May of 1968, and all with-in 9 days of each other! Comes with Protect-O-Plate, Owner Manual, Several Original Registrations, Owner Protection Warranty Booklet - This booklet has the car’s VIN stamped thru all the pages.
  • Car was inspected on November 7 th of 2015 by respected Camaro expert Jerry MacNeish of Camaro Hi-Performance. It was Certified by Jerry as a REAL Authentic Z/28 with a complete numbers matching drive train. A quote from his report – “I can certify with certainty that this 1968 Camaro is an authentic Z28 Camaro” And just 15 days later the car was shipped back to Illinois and received “Heritage” status at the 2015 MCACN - "Muscle Car & Corvette Nationals" in the "Vintage Certification" class. Missing “Legend” status by fewer than 5 points! Only due to exterior paint loss and condition. Car was certified there also, as being a complete numbers matching authentic Camaro Z/28 Survivor.
  • Some info and items that have been serviced. Engine oil filter and high zinc oil have been changed 8 times in 3,000 miles. This was done to help clean engine of debris. Nothing major has been done to the engine, and I believe it has never been apart or out of the car. Light white smoke on start-up, going away during warm-up. Car runs good. Intake manifold removed for vacuum leak. Engine RPM's have not exceeded 4,500 during the time of my ownership. Transmission fluid was changed along with the rear axle fluid with GM positraction additive. Then car was driven 100 miles and both were changed again. Valves have been adjusted. Generator has been rebuilt. Front bearings have been grease packed and seals replaced. All Zerk fittings have been greased including clutch bell crank. Timing chain was replaced with double roller Cloyes. All 3 rubber brake line hoses were replaced, and fluid bled at all four corners until clean. Gas tank was pumped empty several times with 3 filters installed inline. Filter cartridges were changed 2 or 3 times. When all filters remained clean after running car out of gas several times... they were removed. Locking gas cap got stuck and would not come off the car. I removed the steel filler neck to pry off the cap. Looking inside at the tank thru the trunk with a flashlight I could see the bottom of the tank, and it looked good. Carburetor filters were installed at carb fuel inlets. They say it cuts down on fuel flow. I see no difference, and better to not have fuel enter carb with no filtering. Correction; Brand new Holley 4053 DZ carburetor purchased and installed. Also installed in original carb the Holley 125-500 kit to save power valves during any backfire thru carb. Original carb comes with sale. Original smooth exterior rubber fuel line installed at tank, with original square edged clamps. Same smooth line installed at fuel pump with original square edged clamps. Tires are mounted with original assembly line correct “MICRO” wheel weights and correct valve stems and caps. The emergency flasher, horn and turn signal switches were froze. Horn did not work. Steering wheel and hub assembly were pulled, along with switch and wiring assembly. All were cleaned, greased and reassembled using all original parts. Signals and flasher now function well. Horn works great! Key buzzer was not functioning. I removed kick panel to find the wire at the door switch was disconnected. I reconnected and key buzzer now functions well. Headlights are original T-3. Both High & Low beam function properly. These headlights have been on for 1 or 2 hours at a time, and function well and are not all clouded up and ready to blow. You will also receive a set of modern Repro T-3’s. Included with the sale are 2 NOS sets each of 1968 only “ C “ and “ D “ cylinder keys that were cut by code from this cars codes. They function well in all locks. Also included, 2 sets of uncut, un-punched. These will have the knock outs intact and will be uncut. These are all Nickel over Brass, Briggs and Stratton keys. You will also receive one set of ORIGINAL factory keys that are completely worn out and no longer function well in any of the locks, but are an original factory set. Steering box had excessive play, so I adjusted, and now steers much better, with much less play. 1st hidden VIN at passenger cowl, and 2nd hidden VIN under passenger fender under fan motor - VIN plate at Drivers Dash.. ALL match the VIN of the car and the Warranty Booklet & Protect - O - Plate. See this video for verification. Also note that the dampness under the car you see in video and pictures is REMOIL that has not yet dried completely.

  • We believe that the car was ordered by a serviceman overseas. According to the NCRS data report, the dealer code is 1 in Zone 21. That is GM overseas distribution. And they noted that it was possibly the Netherlands. We think it was ordered but never picked up. Then used by a dealership salesman by the name of Stephen Rollins as a demo with dealer plates. He worked at “Central Chevrolet” in Freemont, CA from ’67 to ’69. I talked to his nephew several times. It was then purchased on 3/26/69 by Richard Ward Anderson. This also accounts for the first year date the car was registered, which is 1969. And also why maybe the plates begin with a “Y”. I have the Chevrolet Motor Division “Application for Transfer of Warranty” sheet. It shows purchase date 3-26-69, date of application for warranty transfer of 4-12-69, and the original date vehicle was placed in service of 6-18-68. Chevrolet made 7,199 ’68 Z/28’s out of approximately 235,147 total production. Which is approx. 3.26 %. Still doing research on this car. If you have any information on this car, that would be great. Always fun to find out new facts. This is a TRUE Survivor! Many ads state survivor, then after reading down a few paragraphs, you see the engine has been rebuilt or replaced and the paint touched up in a couple places, and quarters replaced etc. etc. That’s NOT A SURVIVOR! Yes the car still exists, but in this hobby I feel that’s not the true meaning of the word. Just my opinion.
  • Misc.. Stamped Body Panel Numbers “ H “ = Hamilton/Fairfield, OH Manufacturing Stamping Plant Stamps are number of weeks in the year ?
  • Hood Left Rear Side Edge = 20
  • Fenders = 20
  • Header Panel Top of Cowl = 20
  • Inside Left Front Rim = “22”
  • Left Quarter Panel = H21
  • Right Quarter Panel = Can’t see it, but - documented original
  • Underside of Deck Lid = T20
  • Trunk Gas Filler Neck Cover = 20H
  • Exterior: The exterior paint is all original “Butternut Yellow” The flawing in the paint is from long period storage in Pebble Beach/Monterey, CA salt air area. This attacked the Acrylic Lacquer and lifted it in spots. Some very small dents in body, one on each door, couple small others here and there, but overall the body is in very nice condition, showing no major damage. Rear Quarter Panels, Trunk Pan, Fenders, Doors and Floors are all solid. Light rusting around front and rear windows, which of course is typical of all these cars of this vintage. Bottom of rear window worse than front, also typical. Other spot is a small hole in bottom of passenger fender. This can be patched, no need to replace original fender. All chrome has pitting throughout, and a small bow in each bumper from being struck lightly. Front license plate is an Original Steel USA-1 Chevrolet Dealer Plate with Greenish/Brown Nitrate Back. Original Black Plates YKZ 821 are not CA DMV clear yet, so will not go on car at this time, but included in sale. Paper work has been filed and I am awaiting the State of California’s decision. I do however have another set of “ Y “ plates that will go with the sale. Both plate frames are original from “Central Chevrolet” in Freemont, CA. One extra will come with the sale. Gas Cap is an original Chevrolet Bowtie Locking gas cap with some new baby internal springs to help keep it sealed tight. Correction.. Gas cap got ruined when pried off filler neck. Bowtie locking gas cap now on the car is a repro. Another original GM Bowtie Locking gas cap will come with the sale. It has one key with it and functions well. Glass is all original. Front window is starting to delaminate in corners. Some scratches here and there. Front Spoiler has some warpage and scratches. Rear spoiler is in excellent condition. I Removed spoiler and it is factory GM, and factory installed with one larger trunk spring etc. Under the spoiler has the original black tape over the unused holes in deck lid when moving “CAMARO” emblem up farther on the lid. Driver side mirror is original & the glass is dated May of ’68. Doors close with a solid sound, and all windows roll up and down. Door/Window fuzzies are mostly worn. Grill has a small crack in the bottom center. All body panel gaps line up well, and striping is also lined up well with a couple factory flaws. Yellow paint appears in diff shades depending on the lighting. The more direct sun, the moreyellow it appears. MCACN Score for Exterior = 80.2%
  • Interior: Interior is black standard and all factory installed with tags on both front and rear carpet, dated May 17 th of ’68.” Dash pad is crack free at this time. Carpet has some wear and fading, mostly on driver side. Couple of small cracks in left side interior armrest door handle. Broken handle on left kick panel. Package tray is beat up from the sun showing some warpage and wear. Original 15” tire Size/Pressure sticker still intact on back of glove box door in great readable condition. Original Front Floor Mats in fair condition. Rear mats are reproduction. Shifter boot was split wide open in back. I purchased and installed an NOS boot. Original comes with sale. All sets of dated seat belts are present, also dated shoulder belts in clips above. While verifying second hidden VIN, I removed heater box and repaired original Heater Core. It is dated May of ’68 and now back in the car. Heater works great! Steering wheel is in excellent condition showing light flawing, no cracks at this time. Radio functions properly. Rear speaker not working at this time, may send out to be re-coned. If so, we will update this ad accordingly. Hooked up an aftermarket speaker just to test and it worked great. So it is the original speaker that needs repair, not the radio or fader. Lighter works. Wipers work high and low speed. Arms and holders are original and in excellent condition. All interior and exterior lights function properly also Dome Light. Headliner is in nice condition. Bottom line, without getting into EVERY single detail…Interior is in excellent condition! Hence the show score below. MCACN Score for Interior = 99.4%
  • Engine: Engine compartment is all original except for some service items, i.e. distributor cap and wires, belts, heater and radiator hoses, oil and air filters, timing chain, PCV, Battery Cables etc. NOTE: Car comes with BOTH style gray tipped dipsticks. Flat and Round Handle. I fixed an Intake manifold vacuum leak. Master cylinder rebuilt and brass sleeved with no exterior resoration. I spent several hours adjusting the valves to make sure they were perfectly set. Car has been driven 1000 miles since. You have approx. another 11,000 to go before your next valve adjustment. Firewall is cut for Cowl Plenum. Stock original air cleaner assembly presently installed. No cowl plenum comes with car sale at this time. “ 532 “ written on firewall and on top of front lower valance. This is original factory writing stating this was the 532nd car of production that day. Amazing that this survived all these years. Radiator cap is an original closed rivet AC-15. If you know your first Generation Z/28’s, you know that just the Distributor, Carburetor, Generator, Water Pump, Clutch Fan Assembly, Intake Manifold, and Smog Equipment if all incorrect, will set you back close to 10 THOUSAND DOLLARS! All those items on this car and MORE are ORIGINAL GM to THIS car. MCACN Score for Engine Compartment = 88.5%
  • Trunk: Trunk compartment is in excellent condition with all original spatter showing light flawing. Underside of deck lid paint in excellent condition, showing light flawing. Spare with an original Good Year Wide Tread GT tire, tube installed. Jack Assembly stamped “8E”and black Lug Wrench with “O” embossed at end. Also has original Jacking instructions and positraction sticker still intact under deck lid. Left Shock Tower has black plastic top hat cover still intact. Still has the factory “Line-up for install” paint mark on trunk lid gasket. Left wiring light harness wire clip intact. MCACN Score for Trunk = 99.8%
  • Underbody: Underside of car still has light over-spray of original yellow paint in places. Underside of the car has no major rust. Light surface rust on the thick steel parts, like the frame, drive line, springs etc. Car still retains all of its original exhaust! Correction… Transverse muffler was falling apart, so installed new one. Old one goes with sale. Transverse Muffler was welded to exhaust tail pipe from the factory on passenger side. Rubber frame plugs intact Part # 4615576. All Original Rear Brakes complete. Correction… Rear brakes replaced November 25 th 2016 as a wheel cylinder began leaking after 48 years! Original wheel cylinders honed to clean up, rebuilt and reinstalled. Drums had never been turned. Drum adjustment knock-outs are intact and have not been punched out. They were turned to clean up and have proper seating of new shoes. Shoes installed are an original 35 year old NOS set of riveted Delcos. Original 4 - piston front Calipers rebuilt and brass sleeved. Front pads were drilled out and relined to save factory steel backing. Old pads and shoes will go with sale. Wheels & Tires: All 5 15” X 6” DF Rally Wheels are GM and dated May 3rd of 1968 – K 1 8 5 3 DF One wheel had some major curb damage and was being used as a spare with a tube. It was destroyed {not by me} and cut with a sawzall {not by me} or similar. It went in the metal scrap pile. And one wheel was dated March. I wanted all 5 to match so I purchased 2 date matched. The March wheel I was told is original, with a “ 22 “ marked inside. It will go with the sale. The other rim is now the spare. Original front anti static radio stars are still in place under both caps. Four Original Trim Rings with correct “ S “clips, and correct ’68 Derby Center Caps. Tires are newer Good Year E70-15 Speedway Wide Tread GT with approximately 1000 miles of use.

According to our data base and historical Chevrolet records, this car is an original Z28 302-290 horsepower V-8 with Muncie 4-speed transmission and factory 12-bolt rear axle. This Z28 Camaro, engine, transmission, rear axle and trim tag are certified as real and authentic. The interior and exterior match the trim identification tag on the firewall. Summary; car falls into the very original survivor’s category. The 1968 Z28 is one of the most popular high performance cars of the 1960s. Only 7,199 units were produced making this model very collectable. Page two of this report will address any component and fastener issues. Page two and three with list all factory options and component distinctions that certify the Camaro as a real Z28. Due to the originality of this Z28 and the fact that the original drive train is still intact, this Z28 deserves minimally new paint to protect the original sheet metal. Many Z28 Camaros were blown up when they were new from abuse on the street and race track. Original drive train Z28’s are very desirable in the Camaro market place. _________________________________11-7-15 Jerry MacNeish, Certified Appraiser, IAAA ID#1007319906 Certified Diamond Judge, American Camaro Association Technical Advisor, International Camaro Club Page Two: Vehicle Component Issues: ● correct upper grille rivets should be installed on both right and left sides ● correct dip stick is needed for the engine, should have round handle with gray tip ● a Gardner exhaust system is needed for this Z28, please save the original for reference and originality ● Smog system has been removed at one time for use of the cowl plenum air cleaner assembly ● The original radiator has been re-cored, correct upper and lower rails should be installed for originality ● Rem-Oil should be used to wipe down all of the bare metal areas, this does not change the originality of the vehicle, it will aid in cleaning much of the dirt and grease that has accumulated on the car over the past 47 years ● Distributor one tooth off in the engine, vacuum advance should be rotated counter clock wise
  • Corrections made as follows: Rivets installed KINDA! I cut the heads off a set and glued them on. For the visual for now.
  • Round and Flat Handle Dip Sticks included
  • Entire underside of car was saturated with Rem-Oil and wiped down. THEN saturated a second time and left to penetrate. And just now sprayed again.

  • It is my professional opinion that this car is an original Norwood built Z28 with a factory installed 302-290 hp V-8 engine. Through use of photo data analysis, I have confirmed that the engine, transmission and rear axle are original to this car as these stampings match all originals in my Camaro Hi-Performance data base. This is a very original car with most of the hard to find parts still on the car. The only serious issue that I see is the exterior sheet metal has been exposed to the salt water air on the west coast for many years. There are many small rust areas that may present a problem later as this bare sheet metal will continue to deteriorate as time goes on. I only recommend repainting the car back to its original color. This will stop any further body rust issues that may present a problem in the future. The Z28 Camaro was one of the most successful factory built race cars of the 1960’s. In 1968 the Z28 Camaro dominated all Motorsport arenas winning the SCCA Trans Am series and NHRA Super Stock World Championship title thanks to the Penske racing team (SCCA) and Jenkins Strickler racing team (NHRA). In September of 1967, Dave and Ben Wenzel won the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana with a brand new 1967 Z28. The NHRA U.S. Nationals is the largest and most prestigious drag race in the world of motorsports.

To answer a couple questions...

Note that this car is in remarkably originalcondition for 48 years 8 months old. The passenger lower fender rot can be cut out and patched in, in a couple hourswithout taking off the fender. Tape off the interior, trunk, and engine compartment and shoot the whole car. Then it becomes what they call a survivor with one repaint. Or do a complete frame off restoration and end up with an incredible car. This car does not have, and will not need a bunch of aftermarket parts. A lot of restored cars have hundreds of aftermarket parts. And a lot of the parts are so small you can't tell they are aftermarket. They look great when complete, but not original. This car isVERY original from the air cleaner wing nut to the wheels. Or leave as is as a survivor and buy ALOT of wax! You could mix a little butternut yellow and blackin clear and just clear coat it in sections and leave it forever. This car is known in the hobby world as one of the most original cars out there.

Keeping with the originality.. since this auction, the driver sidekick panel was removed and cable changed out with a nice handle black with no cracks.Had to go thru4 with cracks to get to a good handle. It's all lubed and back together and functions great. Vacuumed out some leaves, and red oxide looks good. That was a fun 3 hour project!

Also rear speaker has been removed and sent out for re-coning. It will be back in the coming days and be re-installed.

Also I have installed the reddifferential "USE POSITRATION LUBE" plastic label on the fill plug. It is worn and matches the car well.

A couple questions regarding RPM's .. This car does run great and pulls strong. But Ididn't want to rev itup to 6 and 8 thousand RPM's.Or rather IWANTED to, but did not and have not. There is no reason for it, and I didn't want to take a chance over revving it. I revved my last solid lifter 302 to 7,200 many times. And my friend actually revved his to 10,000more than once! If you buy the car you can have at it and wind it up to the moon. But if you come for a test drive,we will not be revving it over 4,500. That's just my personal cut off.I may install a rev limiter.

Lastly for this update. The engine harness has been spliced, and there was a porcelain resisterthat was installed at one time. Also the wiring at the starter was frayed. So I purchased an aftermarket harness and spliced in the last4 or 5 feet down to thestarter. And removed the resister. You can search for original or install complete aftermarket engineharness. But starter now turns over much better. Only had 3 or 4 wires connected before.
