There's no doubting the F1 Camaro's significance in the collector car world. Like the '57 Bel Air and C2 Corvette, first generation F-Bodies are considered one of the all-time great Chevrolet classics. That said, the popularity of second generation Camaros is certainly growing. Ask any young enthusiast what their favorite year panther is and you're just as likely to hear "1970" "1973" or "1980" as "1967", "1968" or "1969". But here's the kicker: at this point in time, there simply aren't that many really nice F2s on the market. And that's why it's a great idea to get ahead of the curve by investing a little money in this authentic Z28. Sporting a correct 350/4-speed drivetrain and hot Cranberry Red over Black aesthetics, this Z is a vision of SCCA-inspired performance. And, as a well maintained cruiser that's benefitted from a professional, ground-up restoration, it's a solid piece of classic car potential that's available for relatively modest money!
BODYWORK/TRIM
A simple breakdown of this Camaro's Cowl Tag confirms that it originally left GM's Norwood manufacturing facility as a Blue on Mulsanne Blue Z28. However, thanks to professional restoration completed in the Fall of 2015 by Concord, North Carolina's JLA Custom Restorations, the car was striped and completely redressed in universally admired Cranberry Red. Once that brilliant pigment was smooth and solid, it was accented with black Rally Stripes and sealed in a thick layer of clear. When that clear dried, many labor-intensive hours were spent wet-sanding a spectacular shine. And today, the car is a flash of flamboyant Americana that sails the sea of increasingly monochromatic homogeny we call "mobility".
Chevrolet did a particularly good job designing tasteful ornamentation for the second generation Camaro. At the front of this coupe, a stainless-trimmed grille hangs a bright "Z28" emblem and guarded chrome bumper in front of clear parking lamps, a factory chin spoiler and stainless-trimmed headlights. Behind that grille, a cowl induction hood founds tinted and stainless-trimmed glass between a chrome header emblem and body-matched mirrors. At the sides of that hood, a clean fuselage centers factory door handles and conservative "Z28" badging between broad rocker guards and flush marker lamps. And at the back of that fuselage, a Camaro-branded decklid hangs a "Z28" branded ducktail above a mirrored bumper, stainless-trimmed taillights and a chrome trunk lock.
ENGINE
Tilt this Chevy's domed hood and you'll find 350 cubic inches of all-American small block. The car's big Holley carburetor, sealed to a polished air cleaner, funnels life in to a familiar Winters intake. At the sides of that intake, cast iron heads hang finned and polished valve covers over coated shorty headers. Behind those tubes, a traditional points distributor sequences fire through loomed Belden EDGE Premium 7mm cables. Opposite those cables, a quality VIPS serpentine drive spins a polished alternator and polished AC compressor above a polished water pump and polished power steering pump. In front of those ancillaries, a Champion aluminum radiator utilizes pliable GM hoses to circulate coolant around a polished support cover and correct fan shroud. And the car's first-rate aesthetics, which mix smooth, Satin Black framing with a vivid Chevy Orange core, create great texture and excellent contrast.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
In 1970, the best transmission you could equip your Z28 with was a tough Muncie 4-speed, and that's exactly what trails this Camaro's stout V8. Naturally, that gear slinger spins a correct 12-bolt axle that's stuffed with mild, highway-friendly gears. That driveline rides in a correct F41 Sport Suspension, which combines factory-style power steering with correct power front disc and rear drum brakes. That suspension is dissected by heat-wrapped exhaust, which centers an H-shaped crossover in front of welded, dual-chamber mufflers. That exhaust is framed by solid floors that are dressed in traditional Satin Black paint. And those floors roll on correct Z28 wheels, which spin two 235/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As and two 255/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As around dent-free trim rings and blue bowtie center caps.
INTERIOR
Open the car's long doors and you'll find a Standard vinyl interior that's been restored to factory specifications. A quartet of vinyl buckets is free of significant wear. In front of those seats, a monochromatic dash hangs chrome-trimmed telemetry above Vintage Air climate control and modern, direct-fit audio. At the bottom of that dash, a sea of fade-free carpet floats a chrome Hurst shifter. Opposite that shifter, 3-piece side panels frame correct chrome door hardware. The driver carves the road through a factory, 2-spoke steering wheel. And passengers haul cargo next to a large fire extinguisher in a spatter painted trunk.
