How rare is this El Camino?
Several sources state only 47 were built with this Engine, 4/Spd Transmission and3:23 Posi-tractionrear end combinations in 1964.
This model is theChevroletChevelleEl Caminos everyone loves!
We only are aware of 11 such ElCamino's like this still in existence.
IMPORTANT: If you have a trade or trades to offer, please call us at (954) 873-6495
PHOTOS-Almost 80 photos are in this auction...give them time to load and they willappearin this auction after all of the copy-so please scroll all the way down until thephotos appear.
The Videos are much closer to the front of the auction and if you want to see and hear this El Caminorun and go through the gears..make sure you watch them.
Please take the time to read all of the copy and look at every hi-definition photograph and watch all the videos....If you do,you will probably have most of your questions answered and get a good sense of feeling just how nice this car is.
We're extremely proud of our 16 years of 100% feedback. On March 15th of 2000 we sold our 1st vintage car on Ebay, a 1967 Olds W/30,4/Speed in Yellow with white bucket seats Convertible for $21,000.Probably worth $75,000 today if it's been well cared for?
Wespend countless hours writing the descriptions of every car we offer exclusively on ebaymotors.com and spend manyhours taking 100's of photographs and then selecting the best 75-100 pictures on every car.
We spend countless hours making sure every car we offer is the best it can be. If we find a light bulb out, we replace it,if the clock is not working, we will alert you to that...we do our best to never "Surprise" anyone.
If a car needs a new battery....we install one....We drive all of our cars for 50-200 milesand if we find something not working...we fix it....if we don't fix it---we tell you in theauction copy what is not working.
One of my pet complaints is spending good $ for a car that arrives with barely enough gas toget it off the truck...that will never be the case with any car sold by us.
Every car we sell is professionally detailed by Marcus. Marcus has won several national awardson cars he has detailed and many for cars we have proudly sold on Ebaymotors.com
After detailed, each car is shipped in a clear "Car Condom" a special plastic covering withan elastic band that holds the cover down at your cars closest point to the ground and preventingany dust or dirt from getting on your car while being transported.
We recommend you use the services of Mary Olson who owns Crossroads Transportand that you only6 use an enclosed carrier. Mary has shipped almost 1500 great cars for us overthe last several years...she is the best and will save you money in the process.
This ElCamino is in our new air conditioned facility in Pompano Beach,FL.
The weather hereis fantastic...especially the evenings....This car could have 100 or 200 more mileson it by the timesomeone reaches the reserve price or calls us up and makes a deal on the phone...and YESwe love trades...especially Vintage cars in #1 or #2 Condition. Call us at (954) 873-6495 and tellus what you have to trade....we will try our best to put this fabulous Chevelle ElCamino in your Garagefor some wonderful "Garage Memories"
Remember the "Good Old Days?"
They looked something like this.....
We have a large collection of cars in the Garage Memories Auto Museum.....They are all Number 1 or number 2+condition cars....I mention this because we are not really interested in taking in trade#3 Condition cars which most referto as "Driver's" It's just too expensive to make theminto the only type ofcar we sell.....#1 and #2+ condition cars.
The difference between a #1 or #2+ condition car and a #3 "Driver Quality" car is enormous...let me explain what we mean
If a #1 Condition ElCamino is $50,000-$55,000.....
And a #2 Condition EnCamino is $40,000-$45,000
Although you can buy a #3 Condition ElCamino for $20,000-25,000the monetary difference is not $20,000-$30,000...it is $100,000+
That is how much money you will have to spend on a body-off-the-frame restorationto raise a #3 condition ElCamino to a #1 Condition ElCamino...not to mention it takes 1-2 yearsat a minimum and dealing with most restoration houses can be a real pain in the A! Justask anyone who has gone through the process...it's not fun! (and very painful in the wallet)
FLY.....BUY......DRIVE
Fly into any of the 3 South Florida Airports...Miami.....Ft. Lauderdale.....Palm Beach
We will be happy to pick you and guest up at the Airport
The Closest Airport is Palm Beach International.....Ft. Lauderdale only 7 or 8 more miles.
If this documented low mileage 1964 Chevelle ElCamino is NOT exactly as describedand the bestone for sale anywhere...we will pay for your return flight home.
If this car is EXACTLY as described (and it will be)pay us for the car at the price wealready have agreed to and we willhand you a check for your travelexpenses to drive home...your meals, fuel and one night's lodging.
That's just one of the difference's that have helped us to sell morevintage cars on Ebay than anyone else since 2000.......more than 1/3rd of a billion dollars.
Who is "Lifestyle 21st Century Auctions?"
We are constantly asked by all the top Auction Companies to please bring our extraordinary vintagecars to their auctions. We have been offered PRIME TIMES, NO ENTRY FEES and all types of perks.
Instead, we proudly choose to sell all of our cars to the worldwide audience of car collectors and car loverswho love the opportunityto buy our cars without paying the 10% Buyer fees and high shipping costs as aresult of a "SpecialArrangement" with a few 'on auction site shippers.'
And remember, when you buy a car at an auction, you have no clue as to how that vehicle is going to drive. We drive every car 100-200 miles to make sure they drive and run as close to perfect as possible...any of our cars can be picked up in South Florida and driven Coast to Coastwith complete reliability, safety and in comfort.
We also love the fact that we can get to know on a personal basis those who purchase our cars. Many we gladlybuy back after a few years and sell them another wonderful collectable car.
Finally, we welcome any pre-inspection of our cars by an Inspection company that is hiredby a potential buyer. If they have the proper insurance and a valid Driver's license we letthem drive the car as well.
We are extremely proud of the cars we offer which has resulted in a 100% feedback rating for more than 16 years.
We sold our 1st vintage car on Ebay in March of 2000. Prior to that, for 40 years we sold almost every car through print media.
The question we are always asked "How do you find all of these incredible cars?"
The answer is simple. We have been collecting the best of the best since 1960! During these past 56 yearswe have met 1000's and 1000's of wonderful guys & girls who love this hobby as much as we do. Unfortunatelymany have and do pass away and when they do the families call us. The cars most often find us for the 2nd time....we don't "find" the cars.
We fly in to inspect the car, most of the times it's acollectionwhich can be 5 or 6 cars....or more. Many times it's a lot more, 25, 50 or as high as 100+ cars.
When we purchase & ship the cars back to Florida we inspect and drive every car. If it needs anything, we haveit correctly & expertly repaired. We don't take shortcuts. If an Air-conditioning system is not working, we don'tjust add Freon....we go through the entire system and fix it right. We're not perfect and once in a greatwhile we mightoverlook something...if we do...call us and we will do everything we can to make it right.
A very long time friend recently asked us "Why do you try and make every thing work in all of your cars?"
I replied in an instant by saying "Because that is way we would love to buy all of our vehicles"
Additionally, we're not greedy. A small markup is added to each car, we keep the overhead to a minimumand always "leave room" for the new buyer to sell his or her car should they make that decision.
We never try to just"Make a sale"because a sale is usually a one time event. Instead, we do our best to"Make a customer"because a customer is forever and that's a VERY good thing in business.
I drove this El Camino almost 200 miles----it drives in a single word.....INCREDIBLE!
I drove it to a car judging show and it was no surprise when we were awarded "BEST IN CLASS"
If Pebble Beach decided to have a class for El Caminos, this is the one you would want to takeand enter in the Concourse D'Elegance.
This El Camino is as good as it gets....It is for the collector who wants and demands the best of the best....they just don't come any better or any more documented than this!
This car is priced to sell on Ebay and is possibly thevery best1964 El Camino left that is equippedand professionallyrestoredlike this car. This is a #1 condition on the 1-6 ratingsystem....they just don't come any better than this!
It is UNDERPRICED the current market on a car equipped like this and restored to this level!
I would urge you to call me ASAP at(954) 873-6495and I will share with you our lowest possible price...we will NOT respondto e-mails requesting this information and will only share this with a live voice on the phone.
If you have a car that is fully restored or completely original and in EXCELLENT condition, we would welcome to take your car in trade.
This ultra rareequipped El Camino was sold to Rich'sCrestwood Service in Crestwood, Missouri on June 8th, 1964 byPlacke Chevrolet, Inc in St. Louis, Missouri. It was a special factory built car ordered by Rich'sCrestwood Services.
Of the 11 still remaining, how many can be in this condition? Maybe 2 or 3?

The History of the El CaminoThe Chevrolet El Camino is a utility vehicle / muscle car built by Chevrolet in the United States from 1959 to 1960, with production resuming in 1964 and continuing through 1987. Produced in response to the success of the rival Ford Ranchero, it was based on corresponding Chevrolet car lines, though in North America, the vehicle is classified as a truck and titled as such. During 1978 through 1987, the El Camino was sold under four main models: The Super Sport, The Black Knight, The Conquista, and the regular El Camino. It also had a twin called the GMC Sprint and later the GMC Caballero from 1978-1987. In Mexico, it was sometimes sold as the Chevrolet Conquistador.First generation (1959-1960)
The first El Camino was produced for the 1959 model year (two years after the Ford Ranchero) and, like the Ranchero, was based on an existing and easily modified platform, namely the new-for-1959 Brookwood two-door station wagon and corresponding sedan delivery variant; unlike those more pedestrian versions, the El Camino was available with any trim level and drivetrain option corresponding to the car line, including that of the Chevrolet Impala. This was also the first year of the flamboyant "batwing" full-sized Chevrolet which sold in fewer numbers than more conservatively styled Fords. So too did the El Camino suffer in comparison to the Ranchero with 22,246 built the first year. The similar but less flamboyant 1960 model sold even worse at 14,163 units total at which point General Motors decided to discontinue the model. In total, 36,409 first generation El Caminos were produced.Second generation (1964-1967)
Four years later, with the Ranchero still selling well, Chevrolet reincarnated the El Camino, based on the then-new Chevrolet Chevelle. That 1964 model was basically identical to the Chevelle forward of the B-pillars, but Chevrolet considered the vehicle a practical, utility model and the Chevelle's most powerful engines were not available. Initial engine offerings included six-cylinder engines of 194 and 230 cubic inches with horsepower ratings of 120 and 155, respectively. The standard V8 was a 283 cubic-inch Chevy small block with two-barrel carburetor and 195 horsepower (145 kW) with optional engines including a 220-horsepower 283 with four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts. Added to the El Camino's option list during the course of the 1964 model year were two versions of the 327 cubic-inch small block V8 rated at 250 and 300 horsepower (220 kW) - the latter featuring a higher compression ratio of 10.5 to 1, larger four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts. It is the generalconsensus among collectors that the 1964-1967 models are the most valuable with the 1964 at the top ofthe most valuable and desirable.
There is a cleverly hidden "KILL SWITCH" to prevent theft and we will onlyreveal it's location to the lucky winner of this auction.Exterior: Silver Gray PPG Base coat/Clear coatInterior: Red

This was a very expensive body-off-the frame restoration that was done on a rust free, low mileage car. The frame and undercarriageare just like the top of the car, the engine bay, the interior and the bed...SPECTACULAR!
No expensewas sparedduring the restoration of this all matching numbers rare El Camino. If someone were to give you n original, matching numbers car that was rust free, it would cost you $100,000+ to duplicate this car.
You can buy this incredible car restored to Concourse standards for a fraction of what it would cost to restore to this level and condition.
The 327/250 and 327/300 had the same cam, pistons and compression ratio.
The 327/250 had 1.72/1.50 valve heads, the 300 had 1.94/1.50 valve heads.
The 327/250 had a Rochester 4GC carb and matched intake manifold, the 300 a higher air-flow Carter AFBCcarb and matched intake.
The 327/250 had exhaust manifolds with 2" outlets and head pipes, the 300 had manifolds with 2 1/2" outlets and 2 1/2' head pipes.
This is the nicest, fully restored matching numbers El Camino I have seen since I bought a brand new onein 1964 from mydear friend and mentor behind the wheel,JimRathmann, owner ofJim RathmannChevrolet/Cadillac,2300 North Dixie Hwyin Melbourne,FL. I ordered a nearly identical ElCamino in 1964(Black/Red)I mainlyutilizedto tow a race boat.
In Memory of my pal Jim Rathmann, when Jim passed away at the age of 83 a few years ago, he was the oldest living winner of the Indy 500.
MELBOURNE, Fla. (AP) — Jim Rathmann won seven times on auto racing's biggest stages. An elusive win at Indianapolis in the historic 1960 race finally turned him into a star.Son Jimmy Rathmann said in an e-mail message to Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials that his father died Wednesday at a hospice facility in Melbourne, nine days after having a seizure at his home. He was 83.Rathmann was a regular on the IndyCar circuit from 1949-63, but had to settle for second in 1952, 1957 and 1959 at Indianapolis. Then, in 1960, he finally broke through in one of the greatest two-man battles in 500 history.Over the final 250 miles, he and defending champion Rodger Ward engaged in a test of wills. They traded the lead 14 times in two hours, rarely running more than a few feet apart while fighting worn tires and guessing at fuel mileage relayed to them only by pit board. With three laps to go, it looked as if Rathmann would once again finish second as Ward continued to lead the race. But when Ward noticed the discoloration in the center of his right front tire, he had to slow down just to stay in the top two. The relieved Rathmann nursed his car back to the lead, winning the race at a then-record speed of 138.767 mph to avoid the dubious distinction of being the only four-time runner-up in 500 history.View galleryFILE - In this June 29, 1958, file photo, Jim Rathmann holds up a hand after winning the race of Two…And though Rathman revered Indianapolis, there was more to his career.Born Royal Richard Rathmann, he borrowed the name Jim from his older brother to race underage in the mid-1940s. The name stuck, and his brother later raced as Dick Rathmann. In 1948, he moved from California to Chicago where he raced hot rods in Andy Granatelli's Chicago-based Hurricane Hot Rod Association. One year later, he was driving IndyCars and over the next decade, Rathmann became a household name in racing circles. He started twice in Italy's "Race of Two Worlds," winning the title in 1958, and raced three times on the NASCAR circuit from 1949-51. He won the 100-mile USAC national championship race in 35 minutes at a brand-new Daytona International Speedway, and he drove the famed Granatelli brothers' car in 1952.In 1993, he was inducted into the Auto Racing Hall of Fame, and he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2007.View galleryFILE - In this May 30, 1960, file photo, Jim Rathmann crosses the finish line in a Ken-Paul special …But it was the Indy win that vaulted Rathmann into the national spotlight. He became close friends with the early astronauts and even convinced one of them to place his car dealership decal on a cart that was driven on the moon. Rathmann also became part of the GCR Corporation team that raced in the USAC Series in 1966 and 1967. The "G'' represented Gus Grissom, the "C'' represented Gordon Cooper and the "R'' was for Rathmann. In recent years, though, Rathmann's health problems prevented him from making his annual journey back to Indy, where he often played golf with formercompetitors such as Ward, Lloyd Ruby and Parnelli Jones and actor James Garner. With Rathmann's death, Jones is now the oldest living winner of the 500.Rathmann also drove the Indy pace car six times, before making his last Indy appearance in February 2009 at the speedway's Centennial Era Gala.He is survived by wife Kay, sons Jimmy and Jay, stepsons Zack and Tosh Pence, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.A few words about my dear friend, pal and mentor...I will never forget you Jim. You were a mentor to me from the 1st time I met you at your speed shop on N.W. 27th Avenue in Miami in September of 1957. You made my 55 Chevy go fast, my 60 Impala 348 even faster.
Then in 1962 you sponsored my 1962 Impala SS I bought from you in Melbourne. Thanks to you, Ed Cole,Zora Duntov and Bruce Crower we won the Winter Nationals in Daytona Beach in Feb of 1962. I will miss your great smile and your ability to tell a car story like no other. God Bless you & your family! One more thing, the night you and I took the Chevy you built for Harvey Firestone to test tires at 160mph was a night I will never forget.
You built for Firestone a 59 Chevy with a 348 Grand National NASCAR under the hood and a warmed over 283 F.I. Vette in the BACK SEAT.
You had a trick double yoke driveshaft & we looked for Highway Patrol cars on the newly opened turnpike.
As soon as we saw a FHP coming at us, you hit the switch, started the rear engine by compression and STOOD ON IT.
We exited at Hollywood Blvd and hid out for 3 hrs. and when the sun came up, we walked to a pay phone and you called for a flat bed truck to take us and the 59 tire tester back to your speed shop on N.W. 27th avenue next to H.C. Wilcox engine shop.
Back to this incredible ElCamino I drove this car for several hours a few weeks ago, both on the Florida Turnpike at 70MPH and all around Boca Raton, DelRay Beach and Palm Beach and it drivesphenomenal.
No vibrations or noises that shouldn't be there...the Brakes are great, it shifts silky smooth and the AC blows ICE COLD. The air-conditioning got so cold, even on the lowest fan speed, I had to turn it off and lower the windows....Actually fresh air on a Florida 85 degree day with no humidity is not so bad.
All thegauges work correctly, all the lights(interior & exterior), turn signals, brake & back-up lights, parking lights, horn, wipers, heater, defroster,AC and the stereo hidden in the glove box sounds fabulous.
The interior looks fantastic and the car's engine and transmission feels and performs like a new car from 1964...not anything like one who expect from a 52 year old automobile.
I looked long and hard to see if I could find any evidence thatbondo might have been used in the restoration process but could NOT find any. A magnetic business card sticks every where on the body of this car. This car isARROW STRAIGHTand the paint, chrome, trim are of SHOW QUALITY. They just don't come any better than this!~
Please have anyone you choose to come and inspect this #1 Condition rare El Camino or better yet, please come yourself.
I always like to point out any negatives in any car we offer on Ebaymotors.com but could not find any on this car....maybe you or your inspector can?
Included with this car are the following:
Original Ignition key
Original Owner's Manual
OriginalFactory/Dealer Warranty book with Protecto-plate
Original NAPA Gold Hat Motor Club Maintenance log (with entries)
Original Delco AM/FM owner's manual
Display Card used to describe this car and to win a countless number of 1st place awards.
I drove this car all around South Florida....I am hard pressed to remember when I've received as many honks, waves, thumbs up and people actuallystopping &getting out of their cars to take photos of this car.
I realize most would call this car a "Trailer Queen" I really don't like this name given to any vintage car that isrestored to this #1 level...and to be blunt, we do not want to sell this car to anyone who is just wants to put itinside a trailer and take it to car shows to win a "best of show" or 1st place award. That's fine but this car should be driven so you can appreciatewhat it was like to drive an El Camino equipped like this in 1964.
This car should be enjoyed and driven. If you want to take it to a car show thats a few hundred miles away...then PLEASE drive it toand from the show.Your smile will be as broad as mine was when I spent a few hoursdriving it around South Florida on a gorgeous day.
I started off with the AC on and the windows up.....but the AC blows so cold...and the weather was so glorioustoday...that after twenty minutes, I lowered all the windows, turned off the AC and cranked upthe FM station playing oldiesand enjoyed this great South Florida day.
I could talk about this incredible car for hours....but better than more details...please study every photo and then pick upthe phone and call me at(954) 873-6495and I'll give you the lowest acceptable price.
The UNDERCARRIAGE and the BED are as nice as the top of the car!!!!

El Caminos from beginning to end......
The El Camino was introduced on October 16, 1958 to compete with Ford’s popular Ranchero. While the El Camino was radical in design, it was a new play on an old idea. For years, farmers in Australia had been using vehicles called Utes to tote goods and equipment back and forth from farm to market. Allegedly this came about in the 1930s when a woman wrote a letter to Ford Australia asking for a vehicle that could “carry them to church on Sunday and take the pigs to market on Monday.” This simple request eventually led to Ford’s creation of the Ranchero for U.S. markets, and the El Camino followed two years later.1959 El Camino
When it was introduced, the 1959 El Camino was a conglomeration of several GM cars. The car was based on the Brookwood 2-door wagon, the exterior trim was that of a Bel Air, and the interior was borrowed from the Biscayne. The El Camino was also billed as the first Chevrolet pickup to have a steel bed floor rather than wood. Interestingly, the steel bed floor could be removed, revealing the rear portion of the Brookwood floor pan, foot wells included.1960 El Camino
After the relative success of the Elky in 1959, it had a rough time in 1960. The previous year the El Camino sold just over twenty-two thousand units, eclipsing the Ranchero both in 1959 sales and its 1957 debut. Chevy redesigned the El Camino for 1960, but sales plummeted with only fourteen thousand units sold. After once again seeing the success of the Ranchero– newly redesigned on the Falcon platform– Chevy decided to close the books on the El Camino.1964 El CaminoThe El Camino thundered back onto the scene in 1964, riding on the new, redesigned A-body platform. Even though the El Camino originated on the Impala line, it turned out to be a hit based on the Chevelle. Sharing the underpinnings of the new Chevelle, the El Camino was poised to enter the muscle car arena. This would have to wait though, because the most powerful 1964 Elky models only came with a 300 hp, 327 cubic-inch.V8. Fewer than 50 were produced with the 327/300hp engine & 4/speed manual transmissions and consider by most to be the most prized ones to own of all the ElCaminos ever produced.1965 El Camino
1965 saw a redesign for the Chevelle and El Camino, and because of the peak in the center of the grille, overall length was increase by 2.5 inches. This year would see a couple of new options, including AM/FM radio and a 350 hp, 327 cube V8. This was a good start in the performance department. Seekers of high horsepower wouldn’t have to wait long though, and Chevy hinted at this with their 396-powered El Camino roadster that toured the auto shows for 1965.1966 El Camino
Once again, Chevy decided to redesign the El Camino for ’66. Although the underpinnings were pretty much the same from the ’64-’65 models, the ’66 had completely new sheet metal below the beltlines. The truck also received several new features, including a new instrument panel and shoulder seat belts, but these were overshadowed by the might of the 396 cube big-block V8, finally made available this year. This engine could be had in 325 hp or 360 hp versions, producing 410 lbs-ft and 415 lbs-ft of torque respectively.1967 El Camino
Yet again, Chevy decided to make some appearance changes to the Elky. It seems yearly redesigns were the trend for the Chevrolet of the ’60s. 1967 models received a new grille and front bumper, as well as an optional vinyl roof. Air-adjustable shocks were available and were installed on the El Camino for the first time this year. (Air-adjustable suspension was available on the 1959-1960 models, but sales records give no indication these were ever actually installed on an El Camino.) This allowed the rear suspension to be leveled out when hauling a load.1968 El Camino
A new generation of the El Camino, along with the Chevelle, was introduced to the public for the 1968 model year– and it was a hit right away. Sales for the previous generation consistently hovered around 35,000 units, but the 1968 model sold nearly 42,000 units, ushering in an era of the highest El Camino sales ever. The wheelbase shrank from 119 to 116 inches and the sheet metal was completely new once again. The biggest news for the El Camino was the introduction of the coveted 375 hp, 415 lbs-ft L78 396 big-block– the highest horsepower engine ever available in an El Camino at that time.1969 El Camino
For the first time since its introduction in 1959, the El Camino kept the sheet metal from the previous year, with only minor exterior changes like the new front bumper and the back-up lights, which were relocated to the tailgate. The SS396 became an option on the Elky, rather than its own model, and included extras like power front disc brakes and a unique hood.1970 El Camino
Although the El Camino received new sheet metal from the firewall forward, the biggest changes for 1970 were under the hood. The 396 moniker stuck around this year, but all the 396 cube engines were bumped up to 402 cubic-inches, although horsepower did not increase. Big news for this year was the introduction of the ground shaking LS6 454 ci V8. With 450 hp and 500 lbs-ft on tap, the LS6 cemented the El Camino as one of the kings of the muscle car era. With an available Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission or close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, the LS6 powered El Camino could devour a quarter mile in 13.44 seconds with a 108.17 mph trap speed.1971 El Camino
The end of the muscle car era was in sight and Chevy knew this. Most engine options were detuned in 1971 and the LS6 454 disappeared completely. For those looking for high performance kicks, the LS5 454, no slouch in its own right, carried over from the previous year sporting 365 hp and 465 lbs-ft of torque. Both Chevelles and El Caminos of this year featured a single headlight, similar to the recently introduced Monte Carlo, although the marker lights were in a different location.1972 El Camino
1972 is often considered to be the end of the muscle car era as the following year would usher in the gas crunch of the 1970s. This year, GM mandated that all their engines must report net horsepower ratings. This meant all the advertising to the public must be done with the much lower numbers generated by the net testing, which included accessories and emissions equipment. Net horsepower ratings fell to 270 hp/390 lbs-ft for the 454 ci V8. The Super Sport option became a trim package only this year, becoming available on all V8 El Caminos, even the paltry 130 hp/230 lbs-ft 307 ci V8!1973 El Camino
The redesign in 1973 created the largest El Camino ever produced, coming in at nearly eighteen feet long, six-and-a-half feet wide, and four-and-a-half feet tall. Many improvements in ride quality were made this year, including clearance for extra spring travel and computer-selected coil springs. Front disc brakes also became standard. There was an option for swivel front bucket seats and the gauge cluster was new, both of these being borrowed from the Monte Carlo. Even though performance was lacking (the 115 hp 307 V8 was the base engine), the public loved this El Camino and Chevy sold 64,987 units–making the 1973 El Camino the best selling ever.1974 El Camino
Not much changed for the Elky in 1974. There were minor changes like the front bumpers and a wide, Mercedes-inspired grille, but for the most part, appearances didn’t change. The El Camino Classic, based on the Malibu Classic, was introduced this year, becoming the most luxurious, top-of-the-line El Camino available. 1974 also saw the introduction of the 400 ci V8, which shared power plant duties with the 350 and 454 V8s.1975 El Camino
A new grille and a new base engine came about in ’75. The base engine became a 105 hp/250 ci inline 6 cylinder. Horsepower for the top flight engine, the 454 V8, fell to 215 hp. This would be the last year the 454 would be offered .1976 El Camino
Once again, the top model for 1976 was the El Camino Classic. For this model year the Classic sported stacked quad headlights, while the base model still wore the dual round taillights from the previous year. The base six cylinder engine carried over from 1975, and a 140 horsepower 305 ci V8 was added to the line up. This gave the El Camino five engine options, including a 350 cube V8 with either a 2-bbl or 4-bbl carb.1977 El Camino
All El Caminos this year would come to sport the stacked headlights used on the El Camino Classic in ’76. Chevy once again downsized the engine lineup, dropping the 400 ci V8 and making the 350 the largest available. By this time, all V8 El Caminos were equipped with Turbo Hydra-Matic transmissions making the 250 ci I6 the only engine coupled to a stick shift. The El Camino Classic would continue on as the top-of-the-line model, as 1977 gave way to a new generation of El Camino in 1978.1978 El Camino
Not for the first time in its life, the El Camino became a conglomeration of other cars. This time the front sheet metal came from the Malibu, the doors were borrowed from the Monte Carlo, and the tailgate came straight off a Malibu wagon. For the first time all of the Elky’s sheet metal was bolted to its own, unique chassis. 1978 models were available in four trim levels; Black Knight, Conquista, Super Sport, and Classic. The base engine became a 3.3 liter V6, and two engines sat above that– the 145 hp 305 and the 170 hp 350.1979 El Camino
There were few changes to the 1979 El Camino after the introduction of the all-new ’78. El Caminos wore more trim this generation, but sat on a one-inch longer wheelbase, coming in at 117 inches. A new engine was added to the ’79 lineup; the short lived 267 ci V8. This engine sat between the 3.3 liter six banger and the 305 V8. The Black Knight trim package was given the name Royal Knight in 1979, but otherwise stayed pretty much the same as the previous trim package. This package would stick around until being axed by Chevy in ’84.1980 El Camino
The El Camino brought in the ’80s with virtually no change to the body or chassis. There were some minor engine changes for the new year, however. The base engine jumped from 3.3 liters to 3.8L for the V6. The 267 V8 stuck around this year, but the 170 hp 350ci was let go. Nearly all El Caminos this year came with a three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission.1981 El Camino
A new grille was introduced, but otherwise the ’81 model shared much with the previous year. The engines from ’80 all stayed the same, but now sported Chevy’s Computer Command Control emission system. This further robbed the already disappointing performance of the El Camino, with every engine in the line up losing horsepower. The El Camino of the 1980s was a far cry from the superstar it had been in the ’60s and ’70s.1982 El Camino
In 1982, GM decided they were moving the A-body platform to an all-new front-wheel drive configuration, necessitating a move for the El Camino to another platform. Along with the Malibu, the El Camino found a home on the G-body platform with the likes of the Buick Regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass, and Pontiac Grand Prix. There was also a diesel 350 available for the first time in an El Camino, although they would come to garner a bad reputation due to poor service history.1983 El Camino
The 267 V8 was dropped in 1983, and the new base engine was a Chevrolet-sourced 3.8L V6, rather than the Buick 3.8L used up until 1982. Rounding out the engine lineup were the 305 ci V8 and the 350 ci diesel V8. This was the last year for the El Camino’s cousin, the Malibu. After ’83 the El Camino would be one of the last holdovers from the bygone muscle car generation.1984 El Camino
Beginning this year, the El Camino SS was offer through a joint venture with a Chattanooga, TN based company called Choo Choo Customs. These models feature the same front clip as the Monte Carlo SS, but did not receive the higher performance engine. Instead, the Choo Choo El Camino was stuck with a 305 ci V8 that put out just 190 hp.1985 El Camino
Production of the 1985 model El Camino began in Mexico and it would continue to be produced there until the end of the Elky in ’87. This year also saw the introduction of the 4.3L V6, a legend in its own right, as the base engine.1986 El Camino
Everything stayed the same for the ’86 model year, being a carryover from 1985. There would be few changes to the El Camino once production began in Mexico.1987 El Camino
After more than 25 years of production, the El Camino was finally laid to rest after the 1987 model year. The engine choices had been pared down to just two; a 145 hp 4.3L V6 or a 150 hp 305 ci V8. This would also be the last year of the Choo Choo Custom El Camino, which never did receive the high-output V8 from the Monte Carlo SS.For the 1988 model year, the G-body platform was dropped and most of the cars were moved to the front wheel drive W-body platform. It should be noted that some sources say there were 420 unsold 1987 El Caminos which were retitled and sold as 1988 models, although production officially ended in 1987, all models were rear-wheel drive.

- Jim Rathmann, 1960 Indianapolis 500 Winner-YouTubewww.youtube.com/watch?v=fnSDVsR7qOkThe centennial moment today highlights theJim Rathmannand Rodger Ward battlein 1960. ...Jim Rathmann, 1960 Indianapolis 500 Winner
