Car description

OK! You're here because you're looking for a Corvair. Probably not just any Corvair, ut a particularly nice example - aesthetically, osmetically and mechanically - with no excuses.

Maybe, ven more specifically, second generation Corvair - the sleek one that tested many of the styling cues for the soon-to-debut first generation Camaro's. The one that has the gorgeous "bubble top" styling, he multiple carb/dual exhaust engine, nd the "sweptback" 4-speed shifter of the earlier '60's performance Chevy's. But most importantly, he one that addressed the nuances and shortcomings of the first generation cars, nd kicked aside all of Ralph Nader's design, erformance and safety accusations.

Take a look at the pictures - and if you agree that this is an eye-catching example of "THAT" Corvair, ead on. If you're looking for a very nice example of the 2nd generation car, his is it. There are a fair number of Corvairs for sale out there, ut very few have a good, olid history and haven't been "resurrected from the dead". One ride in this '66 Monza and you'll immediately know that Nader had it all wrong.

To begin, his Regal Red hardtop is a very clean, ry Southern car, urchased from a private party in Austin, X. The color is eye-catching, ppearing as a lighter red in the intense sunlight to more of a wine red in the shadows and at night (the latter is probably closer to the in-person appearance). The body-color Rallye wheels and the immaculate white/black interior complete the package nicely. The mileage on the odometer at the time of purchase was 46,736 miles which was immediately increased by some 1,250 miles during the drive to Wisconsin. Upon arrival, thorough "physical" (with the help of a handful of nitpicking gearhead friends) charted the following general course of action:

ENGINE / TRANSMISSION:

  • Complete, n-depth tune-up and fluids change, ncluding new oil pan and valve cover gaskets - this car is completely dry in the engine compartment and top to bottom throughout, ith has no leaks whatsoever;
  • New starter and internally-regulated alternator (65 amp);
  • New Crane electronic ignition;
  • New (Ray Sedman) billet shift coupler, ooling fan and idler pulleys;
  • New clutch cable;
  • New/refreshed and upgraded intake/fuel system, ncluding all engine compartment hard fuel lines, ackup electric fuel pump, tainless steel gas tank float, tainless steel carb linkage (Roger Parent), leaned and rebuilt carbs and new high flow air cleaners;
  • New heater duct hose, an belt and various rubber grommets and insulators;
  • New Clark's exhaust with stainless steel tips.

SUSPENSION/BRAKES:

  • Refreshed front suspension, ncluding new sway bar bushings, pper and lower ball joints, nd alignment;
  • Refreshed rear suspension including rear bushings and alignment;
  • Brakes rebuilt at all four corners, ncluding drums turned;
  • New KYB Gas-A-Just Shocks;
  • New P195/70R14 Hankook Optimo radial tires.

INTERIOR:

  • VDO Tachometer centered between OEM info gauge, nd
  • GPS (Speedhut) multi-function Speedometer. This upgrade was installed at 53,806 miles and currently reads approximately 3,900 miles - bringing the vehicle total to approximately 57,700 miles;
  • AutoMeter gauges - Oil Temperature, il Pressure and Volts monitor critical functions of the air-cooled engine;
  • New high volume heater fan motor and heater fan blade;
  • New seat foams, eat belts and sun visor mounts;
  • "Tall driver" seat track extenders (allow for additional front seat travel);
  • Removable front seat console with dual cupholders;
  • Clark's Carpet floormats.

EXTERIOR:

  • New window weather strips
  • Camaro front spoiler;
  • New trim rings for the 14 X 6 OEM Rallye wheels.

Following the completion of most of the work the car was treated to a round trip to Ft. Lauderdale, here it spent three months enjoying the weather, he beach, he local restaurants and the car shows. Observed combined gas mileage averages in the mid to high 20's, ut expect 30 or better on long Interstate runs.

Performance at Interstate speeds proved to be exemplary. Handling is sporty, ight and predictable as one might expect from a relatively small, ear-engine car (Porsche knows the secret); shifting is smooth and silky; and braking is nothing short of phenomenal - firm (with pleasant pedal feedback) and straight (with no discernable nose dive). It runs cool all day long and can sit and idle for any length of time, ven on the hottest summer day. In town, e prepared to answer a LOT of questions. Its looks are magnetic, t sounds wonderful, ts rear-engine mechanicals are a conversation piece, nd the fact that it is a 1966 CHEVROLET CORVAIR MONZA is truly a curiosity to most anyone under the age of thirty-something (no shortage of admirers shaking their collective heads in disbelief that such a car ever existed ...... in the '60's ...... let alone spawned from American-born GM!)

After returning to Wisconsin, he remaining mileage has been "earned" locally (it has to compete with a handful of other cars and motorcycles in my collection, s well as the reduced number of fair weather driving days that we enjoy here in the Midwest)..............

Which leads to why you're reading about this great car on Ebay. Short of taking it to the next level and making it a "trailer queen", r risking changes that would almost certainly detract from its current state of originality, erformance, eliability and looks, here's really nothing left to do here .......... And that's not in my DNA! It's time to move on to the next project (already underway, ith another on the horizon) and let someone else enjoy this time capsule. That makes you the winner - in avoiding an expensive restoration or rehab and, bsent a known Corvair mechanic, aving to pay someone to learn the in's and out's of these great little cars.
