This is a true survivor car. That is, nly common wear items have been replaced with norestorations orrepairs have been made. Theoriginalgreen paint, and painted trim work, nterior and drivetrain are all accounted for. This car has some tasteful period upgrades includingwire "Firestone Balloon Tire"wheels with wide white Firestone tires, nbsp;Banjo steering wheel with thermometer, emperature gauge and pocket watch holder. Tires themselves are in fine shape with no dry rot and excellent tread.
Odometer reads 2891 Miles. We have no way of truly proving that this is original mileage but we'll let the photos speak for themselves. Any damage that we see on the car seems to be more from storage over the past 86 years than wear from use.
The story goes that this car was driven only for the local 4th of July Parade in Tiffin, A and was garage kept for the rest of the year, t was the pride and joy of the owner. After his passing the car sat. During these years (1980's until present)the car was unused and the engine became stuck; thewife held on to the carfor sentimental reasons until she was forced to downsize and move out of the home. At this point the wife decided that it was time to pass it on to a new owner and asked the locals at the town's diner if anyone was interested in an old car. One patron was and purchased the vehicle. Once thisfellowhad ownedit, or awhile, e decided that he had too many projectsand since this one wasn't running it'd be the first to go. While having a headliner installed on another project car a deal was struck with the upholsterer...Me.
After acquiring the carI washopeful that the engine was going to be an easy fix. Howeveryears of not running had taken its toll. The old cast iron pistons and cylinders had fused themselves together. Therefore a rebuild of the engine was required. Many NOS and NORS parts were used to keep the engine as original as possible. These were sourced from swap meets such as Spring Carslile, allJefferson, ola and Chevrolet parts specialists. Machine work was performed at D&R Machinein Marion, A.
The following are detailed notes of the work performed:
- Cylinder block cleaned and bored 0.060"
- Aluminum NORS 4 ringPistons installed with NORS Piston Rings.
- NOS 1930 Chevrolet valves installed along with new valve springs, etainers and keepers. The cylinder head had, ad hard seats installed at some point in its past. These were freshened with a valve job.
- Crankshaft polished
- All babbitt bearings inspected and re-shimmed per factory manual procedure.
- Oil pan replaced with NOS due to rust pinholes in original.
- Camshaft, ifters and pushrods cleaned and inspected. Cam timing gear replaced with NOS piece.
- Rocker arms and shafts cleaned and inspected. New oiler wicks installed.
- All copper oil lines cleaned and re-installed.
- "Best Gaskets" Gasket Kit used upon re-assembly.
- Originalpressure plate and flywheel deemed excellent condition and re-used. Clutch disk replaced with NOS disk due to center hub rivets damaged on original. Carbon throwout bearing in good condition and was re-used.
- Painted original Chevrolet gray color. Custom color was matched to what was believed to be original paint on the NOS oil pan.
- Distributor cleaned &re-oiled. Points, ondenser rotor and distributor cap replaced with NORS parts.
- New modern plug wires, lugs, nd coil installed for reliability.
- Starter inspected and oiled
- Generator inspected and oiled
- Water pump re-greased and packing gland nut adjusted.
- Tillotson JR5A Carburetor installed. This is a 1930's 1940's aftermarket replacement that included an adaptor to re-use the factory cables and linkage. Nothing was cut or modified to install this.
All of the old/original parts that were replaced on the engine will be included with the car, ncluding the original Carter carburetor and a parts carburetor. These carburetors hadbeen damaged by water however may be able to be restored by a professional. Also receipts are available.
The engine runs great. Will actually run down 2 lane highways at near 50 MPH. Holds good oil pressure and generator charges at 12-15 amps.
- Gear oil in 3 speed transmission and rear end drained and filled
- All suspension, teeringand manual brake pivots greased.
- Brakes adjusted
Projects left for the next caretaker:
- Outer door handles on passenger side do not work. One handle is broken off and the other just turns. Doors can be opened from inside. Drivers side doors work perfectly.
- Roll up windshield mechanism removed and disassembled. Window currently stuck in down/closed position. A couple of the pot metal gears have teeth missing. I believe there is a Chevrolet specialist that makes a kit to refurbish this. I believe all original parts are accounted for damaged and other wise.
- Brake light remains on. This seems to be the brake light switch.I've sprayed this with penetrating oil however thatis as far as I've taken it.
