Car description

1936 Cadillac Series 60 Coupe

The Cadillac Series 60 was produced from 1936 through 1940 when it was replaced by the Series 61. The Cadillac Series 60 was their mid-price offering; a vehicle outfitted with a potent 322 cubic-inch eight-cylinder engine and stylish bodies. The exterior was designed by the Legendary Harley Earl with their sleek grille and split 'vee'-shaped windshields. The body rode atop of a newly introduced 'knee-action' independent coil spring front suspension. The suspension was designed by Maurice Olley, a former Rolls-Royce engineer. The steering was designed by Hotchkiss and the handbrake could be found located on the dash.

As we climb the hill in the paved driveway, in the distance we can see the Maison Rouge with pedimented portico and circular driveway fronting it. The perfect place to pick up my significant other and go out for an afternoon of much needed "us" time and a picnic. Packing the car, we will then head off to a secluded area, where we will be surrounded by a myriad of trees all changing leaves, and some tinkling down on our designated blanket square. Our trusty Series 60 Cadillac parked in the background, we can bask in the warm glow of success, and make plans for more travel in our restored show quality car that at one time only the well-heeled could afford.

Exterior
Pass the condiments, and shuffle the impending ants away, the Series 60 that got us here had undergone a no expense spared, completely documented restoration by true professionals. It is worth the effort though as we are talking about body number 8 of a limited production Cadillac. So much to talk about, so little space, we have wonderfully curved surfaces that appear to have spent hours on the English wheel. A thin vertical grille with horizontal ribs flowing back from a front V spine which is flanked by 2 bullet style housings for the single headlight on either side. A Goddess Flying Lady adorns the top of the radiator surround and a long side vented in chromed hood runs rearward to meet the split glass windshield. On either side are rounded catwalks that emanate from the grille area and melt into the front fenders. These have a wonderful line, and house a metal enclosed spare tire. All this is maroon paint which is the deep end of the pool as to looks and adds a nice contrast to the overall body tuxedo black, which is also not shallow. A running board hangs just below the doors and allows easy access to this coupe. On back another rounded fender in maroon. some bullet style taillamp housings, and a rounded trunk deck. Perfectly preserved and restored ribbed curved bumpers protect the front and rear and deep dish chromed wheel covers are wrapped in wide whites all around. Sporty but elegant, this car is not for the faint of heart.

Interior
Sporting its factory matching design but will all new beige stitched broadcloth. Period correct broadcloth overstuffed and embossed seats complete with a central button on each back, sit within a nicely restored tub. The entire interior is covered with beige broadcloth and it is all pristine. Behind this front seating, is a small rear jump seat, foldable out of the way to store any essentials behind the front bench. A beautiful black banjo style steering wheel with a central Cadillac badge fronts an art deco styled dash. All restored original gauges are geometrically arranged on the tan painted dash and are housed with shiny surrounding square and round bezels. Horizontal shiny ribs add extra texture and delineate the knobs and centrally located radio. A heater is below the dash, and tan carpet is covering the floors in style I might add.

Drivetrain
Opening the vented cowled hood, we see a completely restored 322ci Flathead V8. It is topped with a 2-barrel carburetor and has the original and completely rebuilt 3-speed manual (3 on the tree) on the back. The rear axle comes in a 4.10 gear ratio. All is very well in this engine bay.

Undercarriage
Beautifully restored, dirt free, and very structurally sound and looking just great underneath. A solid X frame holds rust free floorboards body hangers and some new under-panels for the spare tires, stainless steel exhaust, and clean drum brakes all around.

Drive-Ability
When a car has been awarded the Cadillac-Lasalle Club Senior badge (637), you know it's going to be a pleasure to drive, and this car did not let me down. A quick starter, smooth as silk acceleration, easy shifting, and all functions working as they should, save for the odometer and trip odometer which were frozen. Excellent experience.

Professional restoration, Cadillac-Lasalle Senior badge, Factory Matching Interior, nearly perfect exterior in two tone black and maroon, with plenty of curves, a Cadillac aficionado's Cadillac. A must see to truly believe.
