For those who know these cars you know you are looking at the holy grail of Fleetwood Brougham coupes. 1981 – 368 ci/6.0 liter cast iron V8. D’elegance trim. Factory Astroroof. Factory real wire wheels. AND optional one year only Doeskin Firemist paint!
These Brougham coupes were rare when new. Built from late 1980-1985, only the 1980-81s had the real Cadillac engine. The 368 ci/6.0 liter cast iron BIG BLOCK V8…the last big block V8 in a standard production Cadillac. 1982-85 Brougham coupes had the ill-fated aluminum block 4100 V8; not only was this engine terribly underpowered for these large cars it was prone to numerous mechanical problems including expensive blown head gaskets; the entire drivetrain (including trans and rear end) was lighter duty than the 1980-81. The 1981 368 featured the add-on 8-6-4 system, this system relied on a early computer control to vary the number of cylinders from 8 to 6 to 4, depending on power needs. A great idea (and used today on multiple vehicles), the computer wasn’t sophisticated enough to work as smoothly as Cadillac owners expected. The good news is by unplugging one wire at the transmission the 8-6-4 system is deactivated and the car runs on all 8 cylinders full time. This cars 8-6-4 system was unplugged years ago.
I am the third owner of this car, acquired in Vancouver, BC by previous owner where it was sold new. The car has 153,000 kilometers on it which equals 95,500 miles. Only the odometer is in kilometers, the rest of the displays are non-metric. The car is an original Pacific Northwest car…the best location for classic cars. The mild weather year-round keeps the cars from being baked like the cars of the Southwest. Both Vancouver BC and Seattle are at sea level and rarely get snow, only every couple of years, and never get salted. As a result this car is rust free…check the photos of the undercarriage…not detailed, not undercoated, just original and spotless. This car has been 100% garaged for nearly 40 years.
Previous owner spent a ton of money (over $7000 above the purchase price) going through the car and very little is left to do to make this the finest in the USA.
It took him months to find what was likely the last set of correct NOS sunroof cables to get the panel moving again. The sunroof seal was also replaced as well as a complete new headliner installed.
The tires are brand new Coker American Classics with less than 300 miles on them.
His mechanic pulled the engine out and went through it completely. This includes the following: new correct valve covers, valve seals, timing chain, timing cover, oil pump, oil pan set, heater valve, intake gaskets, rear main seal. Full tune up: dist cap, plugs, wires, rotor. Air temp sensor. New starter. Coolant, etc. Guidematic headlight (auto dimming) NOS relay. And much more. Receipt on hand.
Additionally, they went through the Air Cond/heat system. New compressor, oem AC programmer and control head, r134 conversion charged, etc. The control head (the digital face you see inside the car) is still finicky…it is the second used one acquired. It still needs a good working one of these to work properly in AC and heat mode (these run $100-$200 each…I have been holding off trying to find a NOS one with no luck so far). EVERYTHING else in the system has been gone through and works as it should.
This example is well equipped. In addition to the big options listed above it also includes the following extra cost options: illuminated thermometer, passenger side power recliner, leather seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, electric remote mirrors, rear defogger with heated outside mirrors, factory symphonic sound AM/FM cassette…sounds great, dual illuminated visor vanity mirrors, cruise control, working auto leveling suspension, etc
The only thing left that needs attention are the typical GM bumper fillers. The rear need attention, the front end lower sides (behind bumper) are both nearly gone, front Lf bumper end. These are readily available from a number of online suppliers
In person inspection in Seattle are welcomed. This is a fantastic and rare find and is a show stopper whenever I take it out. The combination of the color, wheels, and sheer size of the coupe is a knock out and grabs attention at every stop light. The last of the big glamorous luxury coupes!
