Car description

1972 Cadillac Coupe Deville

1972 was a very BIG year for Cadillac, as well as for US workers. And in a number of ways, things haven't been quite the same for any of us since. When this 1972 Coupe DeVille first rolled off the assembly line, it was the biggest ever, a full nineteen feet long and almost seven feet wide. And this generation remains the high-water mark for American cars, in size. The '72 Caddy was the quintessential land barge; it floated along serenely and optimistically across America on the fresh and un-crowded interstate system, its 7.7-liter V8 slurping a gallon of 39-cent gas every twelve blissfully-isolated miles. (Thanks to Paul Niedermeyer at Curbside Classics!)

For consignment this record holder for the largest car of this era the 1972 Cadillac Coupe DeVille. All steel, all large, all nicely preserved on the interior and exterior. An overall expensive appearing patina on most surfaces.

Exterior
With plenty of metal to cover, gallons of Cotillion White have now enveloped this car. The paint is nice, and all chrome trimmings are shiny and not pitted or rusted. The V shaped front grille with the hood atop of it emulating that V takes your eye forever until you reach the windshield. The rear trunk lid is much the same, weighing in with square footage much the same as a NY apartment! A fairly clean white vinyl covered hardtop shows no rust underneath and all glass is clear and clean. Rear fender skirts and those large vertical taillights melting into the bumper on the back are iconic Cadillac design cues. Standard Caddy wheel covers are wrapped in thin white sidewalls which note very little usage on the rubber tread.

Interior
Dark Blue is the interior color, and all surfaces show a nicely aged patina. The driver's door panel houses all the controls for the windows and drivers mirror, as well as a handy door mounted wiper/washer box within ergonomic reach...something not seen every day. Turning our attention to the interior seating arrangements, we note dual large overstuffed leather covered and buttoned buckets with a fold down central armrest. The seats are powered to get it just right baby bear. The leather is showing some light folding creases, but it reminds me of a nicely used favorite leather chair you might have at home. A large couch like rear bench in matching blue leather, also sports a central arm rest, and this bench also has arms on either side which harbor the essential ashtrays and window toggles. Upfront the long wide dash is in padded blue vinyl and has some wood appliqu running through the center of it. All gauges are clean and clear plastic coverings are looking good. An aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette radio is now replacing the original GM radio. Slightly faded blue carpet floods the large floor plan, and a deep shiny blue headliner is hanging in there tightly above this luxurious passenger compartment.

Drivetrain
The big mill which is a 472ci V8, is original to this car and sits within a nicely preserved engine bay. A single 4-barrel carburetor liberally feeds this engine, and it puts power rearward to a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, and a 2.93 rear axle.

Undercarriage
Structurally sound with just 2 areas of concern which are on either side just in front of the rear wheel wells where some invasive rust is seen on the inside rockers. This has not seemed to affect the exterior on these areas. Floorpans and remainder of the undercarriage are solid. Power disc brakes are up front and power drums for the rear. Lots more aged patina surfaces under here.

Drive-Ability
Upon getting in I felt a bit like I needed to put my yacht captains' hat on so I could successfully navigate our test track. She cranked right to life and idled with nary a sound. I took off and it did so with ease, propelling me forward with ease. She corners nicely, and the brakes brought me to an abrupt halt. Stepping hard on the gas offers up nice acceleration as well as a hiss from the exhaust as I moved quickly up to cruising speed. And what a smooth ride to boot!

Well preserved and nicely aged would best sum up this luxurious piece of Detroit iron. Plenty of interior space to romp around in, and the leather is soft and supple. Surrounded by many conveniences you and your passengers can whisk down the highways and byways while you watch the gas gauge needle take a dive towards the E. But hey it's a Caddy...who cares?
