Description 1906 Buick Model F Touring
Listed on behalf of the owner's estate.
Located in PORTLAND, OREGON
Produced at Buick's Jackson, Michigan factory, this car is one of 1,200 Model F's made in 1906.
a 159 cubic inch, horizontally opposed 2-cylinder gasoline engine, it created 22 horsepower. 2-speed planetary transmission with cone clutch and side lever for high-speed and neutral. The engine is under the seat and 16 gallon gas tank is under the hood. The car rides on an 87 inch wheelbase and the 5-passenger body was termed a "Side Entrance Tonneau."
While the early history of this car is now unknown, by the early 1960's it was owned by Ted Folson of Portland, Oregon. In the late 1960's it was sold to Dr. Leo J. Freiermuth, a President of the Portland Chapter of the Horseless Carriage Club of America, as well as being a national board member of the HCCA. He set out on a full restoration of the Buick in the mid-1970's. The car was completed in time to participate in the HCCA National Tour in Colorado in 1977. Dr. Freiermuth toured the Buick regularly, including the HCCA 1 and 2 cylinder car tour in Portland in 1980 and the HCCA 50th Anniversary Tour in 1987, as well as other tours into the 1990's, racking up hundreds of miles, and always keeping it maintained as needed.
In 2004 it was acquired from Freiermuth by Howard Grabhorn of Beaverton, Oregon, a collector or early automobiles and steam engines. Howard had known the car for many years, and even stored it for Ted Folson during his ownership in the 1960's. After purchasing the car, Grabhorn kept it stored and displayed in his warehouse showroom along with his other collectibles. With his recent passing, the family is now making this Buick available for purchase here on eBay.
The restoration has seasoned and presents nicely today. The wood body is solid and in excellent condition. The car is finished in correct Buick "Purple Lake" color with Ivory frame and running gear, as were all Model F's from the factory. The finish presents well with some areas of checking from age. The leather upholstery is very nice. All brass components and accessories are present and appear in excellent condition and ready to be polished. Please see photos. The engine turns, but has not been started since 2004. A cursory check has been made and it appears that the starting procedure will be straight forward for a knowledgeable collector/mechanic. Your personal inspection is welcome during the auction period. Note that this car has no speedometer or odometer, so actual mileage is unknown.
Overall, this is a great opportunity to acquire an early and desirable 113 year-old, 2-cylinder brass Buick that is ready to run again. A realistic reserve has been placed on this car based on rarity and current condition. Please bid accordingly.
